Pro-abortion bigot group attacks Catholics in Hell’s Bible paid ad. Catholic League explains.

From the Catholic League:

FRONTAL ASSAULT ON CATHOLICISM
MARCH 9, 2012 BY ADMIN

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments as follows:

Never has there been a more vicious anti-Catholic advertisement in a prominent American newspaper than the one in today’s New York Times[Hell’s Bible] by Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF).

The demonization of Catholicism is palpable.

The pretext of the ad [click here] is the Catholic Church’s opposition to the Health and Human Services mandate forcing Catholic non-profits to include abortion-inducing drugs, contraception and sterilization in its insurance plans. Its real agenda is to smear Catholicism. Here is how the ad begins: “It’s time to quit the Roman Catholic Church. Will it be reproductive freedom, or back to the Dark Ages?” [I wonder if they get any money from an Obama superpac or the DCCC.  How do you find out where 501c3’s get their money?  Is it even possible?  I digress.]

The ad blames the Catholic Church for promoting “acute misery, poverty, needless suffering, unwanted pregnancies, overpopulation, social evils and deaths.” [Probably because of all the hospitals, schools and charities the Church has built and run.] It says the bishops are “launching a ruthless political Inquisition” against women. [NB: Like all lefties, they mendaciously reduce what the Church teaches to something “political”.  Always watch for that.  When the Church teaches doctrine, the Church’s enemies say it is “political” and that the Church’s teachings are “policies”.] It talks about “preying priests” and corruption “going all the way to the top.”

In an appeal to Catholic women, it opines, “Apparently, you’re like the battered woman who, after being beaten down every Sunday, feels she has no place else to go.” [But abortion and contraception, the liberal sacraments, have freed women to  be treated like objects.  That must be the goal of this group: turn women into tools for making money for big-business abortion.  Do you suppose this group gets any money from Planned Parenthood?  I don’t know the answer. I’m just askin’]

FFRF is led by a husband and wife team, Annie Laurie Gaylor and Dan Barker. Fortunately for Gaylor, her mother did not follow through on the advice she gave women in her book, Abortion Is a Blessing. [For people like this, for their secularist religion of self-worship, abortion is a sacrament.]

Not a single Catholic who reads this ad will be impelled to leave the Church. That is not the issue (Catholicism, unlike many other religions, is actually growing in the U.S., and worldwide).

The issue is the increase in hate speech directed at Catholics.

Nothing will stop Catholics from demanding that the Obama administration respect their First Amendment rights, this vile assault by FFRF notwithstanding.

Why the Times allowed this ad is another issue altogether. [Because, Bill, it is Hell’s Bible.]

Ps 58:

1 To the choirmaster: according to Do Not Destroy. A Miktam of David.

Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods? Do you judge the sons of men uprightly?
2 Nay, in your hearts you devise wrongs; your hands deal out violence on earth.
3 The wicked go astray from the womb, they err from their birth, speaking lies.
4 They have venom like the venom of a serpent, like the deaf adder that stops its ear,
5 so that it does not hear the voice of charmers or of the cunning enchanter.
6 O God, break the teeth in their mouths; tear out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD!
7 Let them vanish like water that runs away; like grass let them be trodden down and wither.
8 Let them be like the snail which dissolves into slime, like the untimely birth that never sees the sun.
9 Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of thorns, whether green or ablaze, may he sweep them away!
10 The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 Men will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God who judges on earth.”

God is our Creator and our Savior and our Judge.

There is a God who judges.

Pray for these people.  Let them be defanged.  Let them be turned from their ways, lest they like snails in the sun dissolve into slime the NYT prints with, lest they be swept away.

Hate speech? It’s a well known fact that under this regime any group, organization, or institution OTHER THAN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, can be the victim of hate speech. The Church is the target and for the left, like most Machiavelians, the end (destroying the Church) justifies the means and anything goes.

  2. NoTambourines says:

I’m conflicted. I could swap out the cats’ Tidy Cat and let them make a certain section of the NYT their “business” section, so to speak, but that would require paying for a copy of the NYT.

Nah. My money is better spent on kitty litter.

  3. shane says:

Father, I have this page bookmarked to console myself when I read something in a newspaper that annoys me:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_of_newspapers

    It may cheer you up.

  4. APX says:

Reading that ad actually feels like Satan is speaking

  5. Clinton says:

I notice that the coupon at the bottom of that ad contains FFRF’s toll-free number. Of course
there would be no charge to a caller who dialed 1-800-335-4021 to politely inform the folks at
FFRF that the caller loves the Church, intends to remain a Catholic thankyouverymuch, and
hopes that some day the folks at FFRF will feel likewise.

It is an added bonus that the way 1-800 numbers work, FFRF will have to pay for that call.

  6. Kerry says:

At the FFRF website they describe themselves as “freethinkers”. I can confirm that, indeed, they seem entirely free from thought.

  7. dep says:

Funny. Imagine if the crackpot outfit that did this were to do a “time to stop being a Jew” or better still a “Islam is silly” ad, complete with a cartoon featuring you-know-who. For a start, the New York Times would not accept it for publication.

Oh, how much better the country would be if we established a border at the Hudson River and gave the part that’s east thereof to Canada or somebody.

  8. robtbrown says:

The ad blames the Catholic Church for promoting . . . overpopulation . . .

The two most populous nations in the world are China (1.3 billion) and India (1.2). Historically, the Church has had very little influence in both nations.

  9. brotherfee says:

Thank you NoTambourines for making me smile today. As an aside, saw this quote: “What greater gift than the love of a cat.”
    –Charles Dickens

As for the NYT, thank goodness for the internet and more balanced sources of information.

  10. At the top this ad says

“It’s time — for liberal and nominal Catholics — to quit the Catholic Church”

Indeed, why should non-believers, unfaithful or non-practicing Catholics, pretend to be — or be counted in polls and statistics — as real Catholics? Diluting both the faith within the Church, and its credibility in society without. Wouldn’t the Church be better off with them outside, rather than inside it?

In any event, hasn’t the faith always been most robust in times of persecution? If so, why not say ….. Bring it on!

  11. contrarian says:

I like Bill Donohue a lot, but we Catholics gotta quit crying hate speech. Let ’em say what they want. The last thing we want to do is respond to their unhinged rants by saying, “Hey, don’t be so mean!”

Henry Edwards is right. Bring it on.

I for one am appreciative of when our enemies unambiguously declare themselves as such. Perhaps we should return the compliment. It’s on.

  12. Syte says:

My thought was to strike back with polite humor.
I wrote a parody “translation” of the NY Times FFRF ad at:
    http://sytereitz.com/2012/03/translation-of-ffrf-quit-the-catholic-church-nytimes-ad-or-its-not-easy-being-free-from-religion/

  13. Centristian says:

An actual human being answers when you call.

I just thought I would point that out for no particular reason at all.

  14. Winfield says:

501 (c) 3 nonprofits don’t normally list donors, although large foundations do list grantees. Using Guidestar, I see that their 2010 990 shows:

    Net assets: $7.7m
    Savings & temporary cash: $7.3m
Honorary Board Members include: Ron Reagan, Richard Dawkins, Katha Pollitt, Steven Pinker, Oliver Sacks, and Mike Newdow, the latter a serial litigator most infamous for suing to remove “In God We Trust” from coins, et al.

A search of some large foundations, including those associated with Soros, perhaps the Tide Fdn, and others may reveal any grants to this outfit.

  15. irishgirl says:

I saw the ‘real ad’ when I was perusing through the NY Slimes late last week.
    One glance was enough!
@ dep: You’re absolutely right! The Slimes would NEVER accept a full-page ad putting down either the Jews or the Moslems. Just think of all the howls of protest from those two groups! But Catholics, noooo….not a peep it seems, except from our favorite Irish pitbull, Bill Donohue of the Catholic League. Keep at it there, Bill! Bare them fangs! GRRRRR….!
I, for one, am tired of being ‘bashed’ as a Catholic in the media, everytime I turn around! It’s about time we Catholics take a tip from our Jewish and Moslem brethren and ‘get good and mad’! I am tired of constantly turning the other cheek! What are we, the ‘Church Militant’, or the ‘Church Mouse’?
Heck, even Our Lord Himself got mad at times!

  16. Rob Cartusciello says:

    Psalm 53

The fool said in his hear t: There is no God.
They are corrupted, and become abominable in iniquities: there is none that doth good.

God looked down from heaven on the children of men: to see if there were any that did understand, or did seek God.
All have gone aside, they are become unprofitable together, there is none that doth good, no not one.

Shall not all the workers of iniquity know, who eat up my people as they eat bread?
They have not called upon God: there have they trembled for fear, where there was no fear. For God hath scattered the bones of them that please men: they have been confounded, because God hath despised them.

Who will give out of Sion the salvation of Israel? When God shall bring back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

  17. dep says:

@SYTE — beautifully done. Exquisite, reasoned, and casting a bright light on those sorry little people, whose first word upon entering eternity will very likely be, “Oops!”

  18. Elizabeth D says:

I have seen a lot of blog comments about this to the effect of “yeah, good riddance to the unfaithful!” so I want to urge that although there is a need for people to be honest about where they are at vs what Catholic teaching and belief actually is, we must have compassion for those who may be choosing against their salvation by rejecting the Church. I am praying for conversion of the nominal and liberal Catholics and of FFRF supporters and that they will know God’s mercy. I went to FFRF headquarters (“Freethought Hall”) here in Madison WI on Saturday after reading about this ad, and prayed a rosary and of course the St Michael prayer.

  19. PostCatholic says:

I have no idea if Freedom From Religion Foundation gets money from the organizations you query about. I would think not, but I can’t answer definitively. I can say that I used to support them (the dues were about $50 a year) in their efforts to preserve the rights of non-believers, but as they became more an anti-religious than a pro-humanist organization I discontinued that. I don’t think you need to harass the religious in order to prevent nonbelievers from being harassed and disagree with some of their tactics, like the somewhat insulting signage they counter-post around holiday displays.

Here’s their Guidestar page if you’d like to investigate what’s publicly available about their finances: http://www2.guidestar.org/organizations/39-1302520/freedom-from-religion-foundation.aspx

  20. acardnal says:

    God bless you Elizabeth D.

  21. Kerry says:

Dittos to Eliz D, one does not want to say good riddance to anyone.

  22. Laura98 says:

Yes… that lovely political cartoon on top, first appeared in the Arizona Republic about 2-3 weeks ago – I remember seeing it then and almost choking on my Cheerios. Steve Benson is our local newspaper cartoonist who used to be rather conservative. Over the years, he has become more and more liberal and anti-Christian and especially anti-Catholic. I’m frankly not surprised he “donated” or “sold” his cartoon for use on this … erm… advertisement.

  23. Girgadis says:

The authors of this satanic scribe talk about the” social evils” and deaths that can be laid at the Church’s door. Funny, they don’t mention the 50 million dead babies that can be laid at theirs.

APX, I thought exactly the same thing.

  24. pinoytraddie says:

Steve Benson is an Atheist who used to be a Mormon.
