tweet

The number of Twitter followers has grown a bit.

We are up to 279 – very sloooow growth.

I have a sense that not many of you use Twitter.

It is strange, I admit.

  1. Geoffrey says:

I suppose I should finally Google “twitter” and see what it’s all about!

  2. Quaesumus says:

Fr. Z, I’m watching you say Mass because I saw your update on Twitter!

  3. Andreas says:

I think I have a mental block for all the novelties, especially something with a name like “twitter”. I think I’ll pass.

  4. Benjamin says:

I too am watching you say Mass because of Twitter! Please let us know in future as well!

  5. Thanks for the feedback! I am trying to figure out why I want to tweet!

  6. Beth says:

I think I’m going to have to look into Twitter. It would be nice to know when you’ll be in the chapel celebrating Mass so I can assist, albeit at a distance.

  7. Jim says:

i follow Fr Z on Twitter but here and there. I really like Radio Sabina. It stinks that I missed Mass. I guess I will stay tuned better.

  8. FrJH says:

“Twitter” sounds very much like the frequentative of the (unjustly non-existent) verb “to twit.”

Speaking for myself, I have no intention so to frequent such a verb.

Speaking for others in regard to myself, however…

  9. Ian Power says:

Generally speaking, if a twitter is not important/substantial enough to warrant a blog post, it’s probably not worth reading; which is why I just don’t see the twitter thing lasting very long. (Not a commentary on your own twittering BTW, Father, just my experience with twitter in general).

  10. PGJ says:

I don’t even know what twitter is…what is it???

  11. Raphaela says:

I tried to sign up with Twitter after your last reminder about the service, and couldn’t because the site doesn’t seem to like my browser. Eventually managed to get an account with them using IE, but every attempt to login using Firefox 2.0 has failed so far. *shrug*

  12. Joan Moore says:

I feel such a twit! I have no idea what twitter is!!

Perhaps I will look it up.

  13. Raphaela: That doesn’t sound right. I use Firefox.

  14. Raphaela says:

Mmph. Problem sorted. For some reason it was blocking cookies from Twitter even though I’m absolutely sure that I never instructed it to do any such thing.

    Following you now. :)

  15. Marc in DC says:

Ian’s take is mine also: although it does seem that it is a good way to alert those interested to Mass times etc.

  16. Amelia says:

Just checked out Twitter. I’m not the slightest bit interested. Sorry, Father.

lol @ FrJH “Speaking for others in regard to myself, however…” and Joan Moore “I feel such a twit.”

It is obvious to myself, that I am more twit than wit.

Sretan Boži?, everyone. Wish you could taste the kifles and nutroll.

Priests are pray prayed for daily in this house.

  17. Most Excellent Sledgehammer says:

My wife just told me what twitter is…so if the normal course of even occurs, I will swear I will never use it, I will finally use it due to pressure from friends, then I will unable to stop using it (curses upon facebook…).

  18. Twitter’s for announcing that you’ve been in a plane crash before you even get off the plane. I almost wrote “survived a plane crash”, but that’s not really the case until you get clear of the flaming wreckage. This guy Twittered first.

  19. Roland de Chanson says:

Rerum novarum statum technologicarum infeliciter ignoro. De fritinnientbus autem avibus interretialiter latentibus praecipue ignarus subsistere malim. Talia quasi-diabolica melius praeterire tacendo debeo.

(Unfortunately I am unaware of the state of new technology. But about the twittering of birds lurking on the internet I would prefer to remain ignorant. I should pass over such quasi-diabolic things in silence.)

  20. Not Getting Creaky Just Yet says:

Twitter by nature and design is very ephemeral. (Just wait, somebody will mistakenly think that “tweets” vanish after sending and be rudely surprised by a media mobbing. We just haven’t seen one yet. Think of the scandals embellished by publishing of IM messages.)
I think if one isn’t doing something of by-the-moment interest and import, the twittering will be mostly ignored. It has its uses, like the plane wreck mentioned above. It was kind of interesting using the web to read twittering of breathless participant reporting by-the-moment of ongoing political theater, but really once you’ve done the “now they’ve shut off the lights, but we’re not leaving! We insist on our debate!” stuff it’s pretty well done what it can. I’m not sure that anyone would want by-the-moment stuff on more momentous things. It might even be discouraging and tempting-to-despair to hear something terrible going on moment-by-moment.
The one use I could see would be if someone seeing an emergency twittered it to the appropriate response persons–especially if they twittered things that they might not realize mattered but the recipient did and thus prepared for. Other than that, eh.
    Just my 2 cents.

  21. Adrienne says:

I don’t see the point in Twitter. Just another time waster. Don’t we have enough already??

  22. Melody says:

My best friend and I stay in touch mostly via the web (she lives in another state). Twitter is a fun way to share small snippets from the day and internet links. It’s also helpful to record some small thought or reflection.

  23. Saw three others in my twitter group asking about the WDTPRS outage. Twitter is where Catholics gather is disasters ;-)

    @SuzanneSadler

  24. Tina in Ashburn says:

Thanks for raising the bitrate Father. I’ll try again to access.

As far as Twitter, doesn’t updating Facebook by mobile phone serve the same purpose? I can subscribe to your page there Father, and update my own or reply to others using my mobile phone. So even though I signed up to be a ‘twit’ I haven’t followed anybody yet. Still dragging my tootsies on this for fear of TMI [too much information].

ooh… must get back to the holiday chores… out of bread! need gas! must wrap presents! oh yea, and dinner, and choir practice again! Another day overlooking the laundry. sigh.

Must. focus. on. coming of the Christchild. He is near!

  25. Twitter reminds me of the noisiness of the world, as opposed to the quiet time needed for good meditation and contemplation. “And he said to him: Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord: and behold the Lord passeth, and a great and strong wind before the Lord over throwing the mountains, and breaking the rocks in pieces: the Lord is not in the wind, and after the wind an earthquake: the Lord is not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire: the Lord is not in the fire, and after the fire a whistling of a gentle air.” (3 Kings 19:11-12)

  26. Mary Bruno says:

I tried Twitter and couldn’t find a way of finding anyone else, except a few on my email list.

Maybe it’s because of Firefox, I might have to try using IE and see what I can find.
