Vandalism of statues expands. What next?

Nitwits in California vandalized a statue of Bl. Junipero Serra. HERE

Nitwits in New Orleans vandalized a statue of – get this – St. Joan of Arc! It was spray painted with “Tear it down!”  HERE  The idiots thought it was a Confederate statue.

The problem.

First, Confederate memorials, next… who knows?   Churches and their statues.

Maybe they weren’t idiots who thought it was a confederate statue.

Maybe they want to tear down the Catholic Church and they meant it.

I don’t think all of the idiots in the world are as idiotic as they seem, nor that those powers inspiring them are idiotic.

That said, there are some real morons out there.

  2. ChesterFrank says:

Bl. Junipero Serra was one of the first statues the Democrats have tried to get removed from the National Statuary Hall Collection in the United States Capitol . That was 2015. There has been a long campaign against him. Your sentence should have read: First, Catholic memorials, next… who knows?

  3. jskelley says:

NB: Saint Junipero Serra since 2015

  4. Alanmac says:

ISIS has knocked down all kinds of ancient statues in Iraq and Syria.
    The real Nazis burned books.
These radicals wanting to tear down statues today are no different in motive to ISIS and Nazis. They want to sanitize and blur history for their version.

  5. TonyO says:

Most of the seeming idiots who are doing the bidding of the unseen powers are just that: idiots. They are the useful idiots of Lenin’s famed comment. Of course there are witting human tools of the same powers – but they are not idiots. Filled with malice, yes, but not idiots. On the whole, the witted tools are NOT the ones out there in idiotic rallies and counter-protests designed to instigate violence – they point the useful idiots in that direction, wind them up, and let them achieve the purpose all on their own.

  6. How dare they attack in such a way the Maid of Lorraine!

Blessed Junipero Serra, pray for us.
Blessed Joan of Arc, pray for us and help us defeat evil!

  7. JesusFreak84 says:

I know our society can’t tell men from women anymore, but HOW does one mistake a teenaged French girl from several centuries past to adult males from less than 2 centuries ago???

  8. JustaSinner says:

George Soros and his ‘friends’ are behind all of this. NWO=no Catholic Church. Globalists cannot succeed if there is a beacon of righteousness; Christ’s Church. Funny thing, I have a sick feeling the Holy Father is playing for George’s team. Going to be an interesting summer and fall. Just waiting for the ‘Peoples Purple March’ on DC with antifa/BLM/BPPFTP/WorkersParty/OWS/DNC. Cleared my calendar at this point…

    *St. Junipero Serra :)

  10. iamlucky13 says:

It was already tiptoeing towards iconoclasm when it transitioned from protesting the monuments to vandalizing them.

I guess in a manner of speaking, it’s actually less iconoclastic if they don’t even know what they’re doing.

  11. Chrisc says:

Iconoclasm is a powerful drug. It can even sway those who used to hold the symbols dear. But the promises of utopianism, the temptations to just destroy are one of the disparities between others and Catholics. Catholicism is highly assimilative whether of European pagans or even European neo-pagans. Gnosticism simply seeks to destroy the vestiges of truth found in various statues, icons, flags, etc. Communism, Islamism, and the statue hating crowd following the Council all influenced by this notion.

  12. Absit invidia says:

Yet former KKK leader Democrat Robert Byrd’s statue remains protected. What is happening is the unvraveling of a nation like we saw in Merkel Germany and now U.K. where, as the prophetic and wise quote admonishes, great civilizations are being “conquered from without after first being destroyed from within.”

  13. In the 1960’s some Irish republicans blew up Nelson’s pillar in O’Connell Street, Dublin. The Irish Army had to come in to finish the job and, it is said, did more damage. Queen Victoria’s statue now sits behind bullet proof glass in the staff common room in UCC, Cork. Be glad if the anti-statue protestors only throw paint and protest, annoying as it is. It’s when they take to blowing them up that one needs to get worried.

By the way I don’t favour having the statues of British heroes on Irish soil but I wouldn’t want to see the statues of pro-Treaty Irishmen such as Michael Collins torn down. The campaign to remove the statues of Confederate heroes from US soil seems to me to be another way of waging your civil war.

  14. GM Thobe says:

Isn’t it a wonderfully useful thing that we have compulsory education so people can make well informed statuary decisions and articulate them appropriately? Chesterton said that the purpose of such education was to deprive common people of their common sense. In that case, government programs rarely meet with such success.

  15. donato2 says:

Liberals attack tradition. It’s what they do. Inside the Church and outside the Church. They invent themselves and everything around them on the fly, with no cognizance of the past. They are a contentless secular “new creation.” That is why societies that they dominate tend to be so barbaric.

  16. Chris Rawlings says:

I think the obvious solution is where we tear down every Confederate statue and replace them with Catholic ones. The Unionists won their fight (thankfully); Christ have won his (thankfully).

  17. lmgilbert says:

The name of this tune is Moral Panic, and a great many people including our erstwhile spiritual and political leaders are dancing to it.

  18. Discerning Altar Boy says:

Despite all this, countless statues of Margaret Sanger, the racist and eugenicist fonder of Planned Parenthood, still stand. Cognitive dissonance at its finest.

  19. Kate says:

The vandalism of statues in front of Catholic churches began several years ago in sleepy, red Wyoming.

  20. Midwest St. Michael says:

The diocese of Evansville had some vandalism recently at the chancery office (with video of the crime):

  21. Anneliese says:

The irony of these people, who want Confederate statues to be removed, have an ideology that sounds vaguely similar to a totalitarian government. The so called antifa claim to be for the oppressed, but they are also the oppressors. Read the recent article on CNN about the antifa. And read Carl Olson’s recent editorial on the left movement. Both are telling.

  22. Semper Gumby says:

The iconoclasts and violent Left are on the warpath again. Given the double standard in reporting by most media outlets, and the tacit (and occasionally outspoken) support by many Democrat politicians, this trend will probably continue and intensify.

In addition to the two Catholic statues mentioned, news reports say a Lincoln statue in Chicago and the Lincoln Memorial in DC were vandalized. And in Minneapolis the “Antifa” thugs took it up a notch by burning the Hennepin County flag and running their flag up the pole for an hour. Reportedly, the “Antifa” flag used was the same design as the Communist flag of Weimar Germany.

There are occasional news reports of churches being vandalized. Also, if I recall, a statue of our Holy Mother was decapitated last year in New England. Maybe someday some “Antifa” goon squad will interfere with a Marian Procession.

    p.s.
The following news report is not about iconoclasm, but is another example of gradually deteriorating civility and increasing militant behavior. Additionally, the atmosphere of lawlessness and anger cultivated by movements such as “Antifa” and BLM (and their supporters in media, academia, and politics) can also incite other Leftist militant groups.

Fox13 Tampa Bay reported last month that vegan protestors entered a Chick-Fil-A restaurant and, in front of children, simulated slitting the throats (using a “bloody knife”) of two protestors partly dressed as a chicken and a cow. The two then dropped to the ground “bleeding.” The militants were there for some time, forcing customers and their children to walk around the “bodies” to exit.

  23. Leonius says:

Did they vandalize it because they thought it was a confederate statue or simply because it depicted a white person who was considered to have achieved something worth building a statue to remember them?

  24. CrimsonCatholic says:

We should tear down all the of the Roman Empire art in Rome, and then the Napolian statues in France!

Then we will live in peace finally.

  25. Chris Rawlings says: I think the obvious solution is where we tear down every Confederate statue and replace them with Catholic ones. The Unionists won their fight (thankfully)…

Surely, we really don’t want to get into that here. The issues that led to our Civil War and the motivations of those who fought it are not that simple.

Taking the hard-left Southern Poverty Law Center at its word as to the history of monument-building, most of the Confederate monuments went up between 1900 and 1915, with a peak around 1910. Now, if I do the math, I find, to my amazement, that that time frame squarely encompasses the 50th anniversary of the Civil War, and the 50th anniversary of each of its major battles and other events, as well as of events leading up to the war. Half-century anniversaries tend to give rise to a lot of reflection and introspection, and the desire to commemorate the great events of the past. They also give rise to the realization that those who participated in those events are now old, and the desire to honor them before they all disappear into the grave. This was also an era when the old veterans of the Blue and the Gray were coming together in a spirit of reconciliation. At the big battlefield reunion on the 50th anniversary of Gettysburg in 1913, Union and Confederate veterans — the very same men who, 50 years earlier, in that very place, had been locked in mortal struggle — met and embraced at the Bloody Angle. It is against this backdrop that all those statues were put up.

Somehow, even in the cynical recesses of my beady-black heart, I have the sneaking suspicion that it was all this — rather than the desire to terrorize blacks and perpetuate racism, as the left claims — that moved people to raise money to build the monuments that nutjobs and ignoramuses are now wantonly tearing down.

  26. G1j says:

Straight on, full blown persecution of the Church is on the horizon. Each event that unfolds is a precursor. We are the last bastion of morality standing in the way.

  28. SKAY says:

    From George Orwell’s 1984

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.” G.O. 1984

Mitch Landrieu, the mayor of New Orleans, is a pro abortion Democrat and a Catholic. I wonder if
he came out against this defacing of the statue portraying St. Joan. Given his recent history they are probably some of his ardent supporters.
It is quite conceivable that those perpetrators have absolutely no idea of who she was. True history is irrelevant.

  29. hwriggles4 says:

Catholic prejudice has been around a long time. There were towns in southern states (I live in Texas) where the city charters forbid the building of a Catholic Church. One town in Texas did not amend this in their charter until the 1990s.

  30. Nan says:

The colonies were anti Catholic. That’s why Maryland was founded.

  31. AvantiBev says:

As an Italian American, a true minority in Chicago, we have already had our statues, monuments and street names attacked as “deliberate Indian killers” (Cristofero Columbo) or “fascist aviator” Balbo Street. I am gearing up now for October 9th.

Antifa have torn up my neighborhood before during the presidential campaign.
I am sure they will be back but in a rumble between Soros funded snowflakes and Italian Am’s don’t bet on the flakes.????

  32. Chris Garton-Zavesky says:

There’s the other shoe dropping. I opposed the removal of the statues in other places on the grounds that such history MUST be remembered. I didn’t realize that there is an organized campaign to erase the inconvenient past. Indeed George Orwell is a propos here : whosoever is now our enemy has always been, and whosoever is our friend has always been ….. and there is no record of the past which will contradict such a view of the present.

  33. Rich says:

The KKK and leftist revisionist historians unite in their hatred of the Catholic Church, so there is really no telling who defaced these statues…

  34. SKAY says:

    Chris Garton-Zavesky said:

“I didn’t realize that there is an organized campaign to erase the inconvenient past. ”
These Antifa, BLM, etc. far leftist protesters are being paid and it is very organized.
    Many are being bused in.

  35. ChesterFrank says:

Interesting that a former presidential candidate had just started an organization with the slogan “Resist, insist, persist, enlist” Sounds like a politically funded and endorsed destructive, fanatically militant, campaign to me.

  36. Ben Kenobi says:

I wish I could say I were surprised. Everyone needs to read up on the Cultural Revolution of Mao. If you are responsible for a statue or anything of the sort, you need to have a plan in place. They are not going to stop with the more visible targets, they are going to go after the books soon enough. People forget that there was once a time when you could be killed for carrying the bible, and even into the 16th, 17th centuries in England – for carrying the *wrong* bible.

I just wish I were a little further along in my plans. I hope I am not too late to keep some of the more important books here and to get them for my little library. Read Canticle if you’ve not read it. This is a very old and very bitter ‘crusade’ against sanity.

  37. Gilbert Fritz says:

Whether removing statues is good or bad depends, of course, on who statues are of. We wouldn’t object to statues of Lenin or Hitler going down. And similarly, I wouldn’t object to a statue of Justice Taney or Justice Blackmun being removed; the Supreme Court can’t redefine who is a person, now or then.

    https://www.baltimorebrew.com/2017/08/21/columbus-statue-in-baltimore-vandalized/

From another article on the subject:
“Leftist vandals in Baltimore, Maryland, smashed a 225-year-old “racist” monument to discoverer of the new world Christopher Columbus with a sledge hammer in the wee hours of Monday morning, posting a two minute video of themselves in the act to YouTube.”

    Gilbert Fritz:
Unfortunately there are statues in the US of Linin and Stalin and they are
still standing. I do not think the leftists will even consider destroying them.
They certainly are not part of our American history(yet) but they are considered
    “works of art”.
