This is insane. I love that the clock broke :)

  2. Sunset is coming and they are still playing!

  3. Relief break.

This is some of the classiest sportsmanship I have seen in a long time.

  4. Now I’m taking a relief break. I can hardly bear to watch it anymore.
    Incredible stamina. Awesome.

    59 – 58 Duece amazing

I’m watching right now in Wimbledon, London, UK! I live 1/2 a mile from the courts and with my back door open, and turning down the TV sound, I can hear the sound of the crowd! Oh! Oh! Two more games and that’s it!

  7. SUSPENDED!

    ON TO DAY THREE!

    59-59

  8. The stats will be amazing.

Well, someone has to say it — the Frenchman quit while the American wanted to go on.

    Who woulda thunk it?

That said, it was the right call to suspend the match.

But I LOVE the fact that Isner wanted to keep playing.

    What a match!

  10. I thought Isner looked completely tuckered out. I thought he must be secretly grateful that the game had been suspended. I hope he’s in a fit condition to play tomorrow.

A truly amazing match. John McInroe commentating on the BBC said he went off to watch the football – England won! – then returned to find they were still playing. I took a bus into town, attended Adoration and Benediction, took a bus back returned home and found it was still going! At least the players will get a rest tonight.

  12. I would advise the American to drink a LOT fo water and to eat a big freaking steak with a side of something like carbonara with red wine sauce. Maybe a spinach salad too. Lots of calories, lots of fluids.

  13. JohnMa says:

I couldn’t help but notice this quote from the story on Wimbledon’s website “even when the courtside scoreboard gave up the ghost.”

    Go Isnter! Beat the Frenchman!

  14. dcs says:

If it wasn’t for the tiebreaker the match could have been over by now.

Hopefully this match won’t be the catalyst to introduce the tiebreaker into the 5th set at Wimbledon.

  15. IL Catholic says:

Amazing! and I saw a snippet of it tonight. The French guy almost blew it with 2 double faults in a row. But that was back when it was ‘only’ 10-9.

  16. jesusthroughmary says:

Longest match in tennis history, period. 10 HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 5th set alone has been 118 games; the previous record for longest match was 112.

The match as a whole has been 163 games; Roger Federer played 202 games at Wimbledon in 2006. In the entire tournament.

  17. irishgirl says:

This is incredible! And I am absolutely clueless as to the scoring in tennis!

These two guys are going to be ‘dead’ from exhaustion!

Brian [cursomundi]-you live near the courts? And you can hear everything? That’s cool!

Good thing Her Majesty the Queen wasn’t in attendance at this marathon! She’d never get back to the Palace!

    Go Isner!

  18. pelerin says:

Irishgirl – the Queen paid a visit to Wimbledon this afternoon – her first in 33 years so she is not exactly a tennis fanatic! She left after seeing the Scottish player win his match. The American and Frenchman are still playing – 64 all!

  19. As of now, Isner is up 69-68!

  20. pelerin says:

Well done America ! Amazing match.

  21. It’s over! 70-68 Isner!

  22. I believe the match is going to start again… 3rd day!

  23. The rebroadcast just started and I hadn’t seen the results. Thanks for the spoilers!

  24. pelerin says:

Oh dear – humble apologies Fr Z. I thought you were all watching it live in America. I must go and get out my sackcloth and ashes!

  25. robtbrown says:

    Pelerin,

It was carried live here. I watched it on ESPNU.

    Later there was a re-broadcast.

  26. Apologies, Fr. Z! I thought you were following live as well.

  27. irishgirl says:

    Yay! Isner won!

Did everyone see the number of SETS played? Holy cow!

  28. Pretty amazing. I doubt we will see anything like that again.
