Two of them look a lot like their father. Only the Pope Emeritus looks a lot like his mother.

I hope being the last living Ratzinger doesn’t bring the former Holy Father to his grave any earlier… =-\ No one will say a Mass for Msgr. Georg Ratzinger with more fervor, no?

Keep praying for Georg and his very holy family. What parents to have raised such devout children! I heartily recommend his book My Brother, the Pope. It is full of charming anecdotes, like little Joseph’s love for a teddy bear in their local town window. Only such a brother could tell these stories.

I’m so sorry for Pope Benedict’s loss. What a beautiful family….

As an older mom, I’m wondering, were the Ratzinger’s older when they married?

  9. BrionyB says:

KateD – if Wikipedia is to be trusted, Benedict’s mother would indeed have been early 40s when he (the youngest) was born. Maybe they did marry late, or for some reason had their children late in life. After all, it would have been a strange time to live in, with the Great War, and the unstable political/economic situation in Germany; must have been disruptive to normal family life to say the least!

KateD — I just confirmed in Georg’s book that his father was 43 when he put a personals ad in the local Marian shrine paper, finding his wife Maria there. “Mid level government official, single, 43 years old, with an irreproachable record, from the country, seeks to marry in the near future a good Catholic girl who is tidy and a good cook and can do all the household chores and is also proficient at sewing and has her own furnishings.” Those were the days! Catholic Maria Peintner was born January 8, 1884, and Georg was born 1924, making her indeed 40 at his birth, and about 43 at Joseph’s birth three years later. I highly recommend this book.
