Egge Satterday for a little, little while yet

Each year for a while, the inimitable Fr. Hunwicke has been explaining the details about Saturday before Ash Wednesday as Egge Saturday, the Festum Ovorum at Oxford.  The discussion of musk and grapes, etc., is engaging.

This is not to be confused with the Curate’s Egg.

What caught my eye was a reference to the Leofric Sacramentary, recently cited by the undersigned in posts about the orations in the Roman Mass “For enemies“.

Moreover, while reading in Card. Pell’s prison diary [US HERE – UK HERE], I was struck by the fact that I was, perhaps, flagging in my prayers for my enemies.  I was chastened roundly.  Luke 6:27-28 “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,  bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.”

Dear enemies, I am still praying for you.

An enemy well prayed for may soon not be an enemy. And if an enemy he remains, there is one less person hating.
