LENTCAzT 2021: 11 – Ember Saturday 1st Week of Lent: Why fast and abstain?

For Lent I offer daily 5 minute podcasts.  They are intended to give you a small boost every day, a little encouragement in your own use of this holy season.  The Roman Station today is St. Peter’s Basilica.

Today is Ember Saturday in the 1st Week of Lent. Plan to GO TO CONFESSION!

Ratzinger explains the order of the Ember Days.   Card. Bacci drills into fasting and abstaining.

I provide these especially in gratitude to benefactors who help me and this blog.

This takes back inside St Peter’s Basilica to the chapel of Sts Simon and Jude whose images you can see on either side of the altar on the walls. Their relics are placed beneath this altar. The image of St Joseph (whose year this is) dominates the altar area. Like all images in the basilica it is a mosaic not a painting. I am always in awe of the artistry found in mosaics but especially in the basilica because they are so huge. They are in themselves faith inspiring because of their beauty but also because they reveal so much about the majesty of God who has infused this creative talent to these mosaic masters who have created such awe-inspiring works which reflect the glory of God.
This chapel is to the left of the great papal altar covered with Bernini’s bronze baldachino and is a popular altar for Masses being said by visiting priests, pilgrimage groups, bishops etc.

  2. Thank you Father! Can you please give us the name of the artist and the CD that the closing music is from? I used to have that CD but lost it in a car wreck and can’t remember the identifying info.
