Episcopal cathedral in Albuqerque to insult the Church by hosting a fake ordination of a Jesuit-trained “wymyn”. Wherein Fr. Z makes a proposal.

Fishwrap (aka National Schismatic Reporter, like a schismatic jackhammer, keeps pounding away.

How is it that the US Bishops have not yet demanded that they remove the word “Catholic” from their title?  They were already told by the local bishops where their abatoir is located.

Are they… afraid?

Here’s Fishwrap today:

Future womanpriest ‘Father Anne’ blames God for leading her towards ordination

When asked why she has chosen to be ordained as a Roman Catholic priest [Note how the false premise (that a woman can be ordained to any order of Holy Orders) is simply accepted by the Fishwrap writer?] — thus breaking the Catholic Church’s ban on the ordination of women and crossing the threshold of formal excommunication — Anne Tropeano’s response is simple.  [As opposed to informal?]

“God is asking me to do this,” she says. “God is calling me to be ordained in the Roman Catholic tradition and to work for justice.”  [Maybe.. just maybe… it’s just you and not God.  What she does understand is that “vocation” actually happens during the ordination when your name is called by someone with authority to do so.]

Tropeano, whose use of the moniker “Father Anne” has helped attract wide coverage of her coming Oct. 16 ordination ceremony from various secular media outlets, including The New Yorker magazine, portrays her choice as part of a long spiritual journey.  [Not all journey’s are good journey’s.  There are, in fact, “bad trips”.]

Though she received the sacraments as a child, Tropeano was not raised in the church and did not begin to practice the faith until her late 20s, when she went through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. [Wait for it…]

“I moved to Portland with a band I was managing, and it was there, while attending a Jesuit parish, that the call emerged,” Tropeano said in a recent NCR interview. “The Jesuits took me under their wing. [DING DING… Say the magic word…] I began to pray, do retreats and become active in the parish community.”

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius “changed me profoundly and forever,” said Tropeano, whose ordination is being organized by the Association of Roman Catholic [Not] Womenpriests.

Part of a movement that began in 2002 with the [non] ordination of seven women by a Catholic bishop in a clandestine ceremony on the Danube River, the association is one of two such groups of women claiming apostolic succession. They say there are now [not] some 250 ordained women worldwide.

The official [yawn] Catholic Church disputes their claims. In his 1994 apostolic letter Ordinatio Sacerdotalis, Pope John Paul II said, “the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women.” Pope Francis further codified the church’s stance this June, updating canon law to reflect a 2007 decree that women who are ordained be automatically excommunicated.

Tropeano’s ordination is scheduled to occur at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  [What an insulting middle-finger to the Church. Let’s see of the local Archbishop reacts to this astonishing insult.]

She portrayed the Jesuits’ influence on her as fundamental[Funda – mental]

“They taught me to pray,” she said. [Pray to….?] “That was when I heard a call — not just to be a priest, but specifically a Jesuit priest. [Wow.] How could God be calling me to do something impossible?”

Tropeano began doing pastoral ministry, but that was not enough to satisfy her call. At age 40 she began studies at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California, which is now part of Santa Clara University.

Really sad person.

Very sad publication.

On the other hand….

Think this through.

The Jesuits allow only men in their ranks.

Jesuits are among the most visible of discrimination against women in the entire Church!

It would be a matter of social justice, diversity, accompaniment, discernment and even “walking together” for the Jesuits to embrace this “ordination”, participate in it, and get some Jesuit bishop to do the ordination at the Episcopal cathedral for the sake of ecumenism… among… non-Catholics!

We demand – Pachamama demands – that the Jesuits put to right all these centuries of discrimination!

Francis must ACT and ACT NOW!   In a way, she embodies what you are all pushing!

I think we should get some Baptists or Presbyterians to host the ordination of some Episcopalians.

  2. Grant M says:

    Now I can’t stop singing: “Fa-fa-fa, fa-father Anne…”

  3. TRW says:

Why should she stop at becoming a priest? While she’s play-acting, why not just declare herself a bishop? Maybe she could appoint herself the Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura! Heck, why not Pope?!! And why would she need someone else to confer holy orders upon her? How hierarchical and un-egalitarian! I think she’s probably internalized the oppression of the patriarchy and is aiming too low by settling for the priesthood. Plus, gender is just a concept. So, is it really even a big deal if someone who just happens to identify as a woman(despite also, quite arbitrarily, having female genitalia) decides to become a priest? And didn’t the German episcopate just wonder aloud whether priests are even relevant anymore?

I’m in the Portland archdiocese. I wonder which parish she was at…I can think of only one official Jesuit parish in Portland off the top of my head. I’ve never been there…we prefer the Dominican parish.

Given today’s heretical climate at the Vatican, I can totally picture a scenario in which Francis would specifically personally intervene to defend and even exalt the Fishwrap, reversing any bishop’s orders to remove the word “Catholic” from that publication’s title.

On the other hand, EWTN is “the work of the devil.”

Saint Michael the Archangel, pray for us.

  7. Archicantator says:

This is vintage form, Father. If nothing else, we can at least be grateful that this debacle has brought some truly “fisk-worthy” material to your attention!

Speaking as one who (inexplicably) continues to be an Anglican, I’m saddened and embarrassed by this flagrant discourtesy on the part of the Episcopal Diocese of the Rio Grande. I suppose they’ll excuse themselves by claiming that they’re just responding to “the Spirit’s call to prophetic social-justice-making.”

As one old Anglican observed, “It seems to me that this new Holy Spirit is doing things the Holy Ghost would never have done.”

  8. Father Flores says:

The way NCR reports on matters that they know would get them in trouble is sooooo matter of fact, presented without comment. Which is odd since they seem to love commenting on everything else. Cf. Horan’s latest.

  9. HibernianFaithful says:

At the very minimum Archbishop Wester should declare this individual has by her actions excommunicated herself from the Church and declare that he is the sole confessor for her sin and to demand a public repentance and rejection of the premises of her illicit “ordination.” I would also recommend that he revoke any facilities for any Jesuit in his archdiocese.

Finally he should commend the Episcopal ecclesial community for performing such sacrilege and announce that any further “ecumenical” activities, of any type or kind with this Episcopal ecclesial community until there is a public repudiation of such action.

Not likely given the fact that Archbishop Wester, given his “exemplary” record to mostly non-eschatological interests See https://www.usccb.org/search?key=wester. Also per Wikipedia (for what it is worth), Wester has been involved with the USCCB as a member of the Bishops Committee on Vocations, Chairman of Northern California Ch’an/Zen-Catholic Dialogue, Consultant for the Subcommittee on Interreligious Dialogue, member of the Migration Committee, the Pastoral Practices Committee, World Mission Committee, the Subcommittee on Lay Ministry, and as the USCCB bishop-liaison to Asia.

  10. Will she get an ordination tambourine?

  11. “That was when I heard a call — not just to be a priest, but specifically a Jesuit priest….”

So…when she is (faux) ordained, will she be a Jesuit priest? Why ever not?

I am amusing myself thinking about her starting to style herself “Father Anne, SJ” and presenting herself as a Jesuit, and wondering what happens if her profile gets high enough. What will they do? Won’t it be fun to watch?

    Toxic masculinity indeed.

Maybe she does have a spiritual calling. It’s a spirit, alright. Just not God doing the calling.

  18. Markus says:

Actually, Archbishop Wester has done something as he is on a list of worst bishops in the USA. From Lifesitenews.com,

    • “Archbishop John C. Wester, Archdiocese of Santa Fe, NM?
Last year, Archbishop Wester? spoke at ?a conference on Catholic LGBTQ pastoral ministry that included ?dissident nun Sr. Jeannine Gramick, S.L., of New Ways Ministry, a pro-LGBT group condemned by the Vatican and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops?. He has also expressed his appreciation for people ?in ?LGBTQ ministry.”
    ? ?
Prior to that, early in his “archbishophood,” he hosted a “Liturgical Conference” in Santa Fe which featured Rev. James Martin, SJ, as keynote speaker.

The only Latin Mass in SF (in an historic chapel) was suspened in 2020 with the Covid lockdown. As the diocese reopended, it has been “cancelled” until further notice.

  20. Annunciata says:

Well maybe Absp John Wester thought twice or prayed about not lending the SantaFe Cathedral for this Jesuit extravaganza. In 2018 he assisted and supported a dissident Assoc of US Catholic Priests. This Assoc is pushing/was pushing for the ordination of women & gay men.
Thanks for the 4 seasons hit, GrantM!

  21. TonyO says:

Francis doesn’t believe that women can be priests. If he were to listen to this Sd. Anne person (Sd. is the abbreviation for “stupid”), he would hear all he needs to hear to realize that the jesuit liberalism (or is that liberal jesuitism) is all wrong. For, Sd. Anne is just spouting the natural fruition of what they have been teaching all along. If the any papabile were in the wings who would listen attentively, the jesuits would be rushing to shut her up, because the first step such a new pope would be to suppress the jesuits altogether. Now THAT’S a suppression we could get behind.

The antidote to this silly liberal jesuitism is, of course, orthodoxy – what the Church has ALWAYS taught, and still teaches (because the old teachers still teach us): Although God speaks to us in our hearts, we sinners can mis-hear Him. The Bible is a hard and fast, written down measure of whether you have heard God correctly, or if you misheard him, because God does not contradict himself. If you think God told you X, and it turns out that X is contrary to the Bible, then no, God didn’t tell you X. You misheard Him. You need to clean out your (spiritual) ears, tune them up by listening to the Bible and to the Fathers and Doctors and the Magisterium, and then listen again. Lather, rinse, repeat, until what you “hear” God say is consistent with what the Bible and the Church say.

  22. JGavin says:

I know a few Jesuits who would rightly be appalled. It seems like everywhere else , the idiots get the headlines.
As to the tambourines, maybe she should have papier-mache puppets acting out the Gospel. Perhaps some liturgical dance numbers?

  23. Venerator Sti Lot says:

To expand upon the comment of Joe in Canada, I find on the website of the Anglican Catholic Church of Canada:

“The Holy Orders of bishops, priests and deacons as the perpetuation of Christ’s gift of apostolic ministry to His Church, asserting the necessity of a bishop of apostolic succession (or a priest ordained by such) as the celebrant of the Eucharist — these Orders consisting exclusively of men in accordance with Christ’s Will and institution (as evidenced by the Scriptures), and the universal practice of the Catholic Church.”

The only priests named ‘Anne’ which the English Wikipedia article, “Anne”, lists in the section “As a masculine name” are Cardinal Bishop Anne d’Escars de Givry and Cardinal Archbishop Anne Louis Henri de La Fare, while the French Wikipedia article adds Jean-Louis-Anne-Magdeleine Lefebvre de Cheverus, Bishop of Boston from 1808 until 1823 before eventually becoming Cardinal Bishop of Bordeaux – all presumably named after St. Anne (as well as listing the High Priest). Both have King Anna of East Anglia (all of whose children were canonized – according to his Wikipedia articles), but I expect there are any number of other Anglo-Saxon, Frisian, and Dutch priests with this ‘Germanic’ first name.

I visited her website (it’s an altar to herself) and even listened to one of her homillies, last sunday’s: it is about white privilige. How wise of Saint Luke to include in his Gospel: Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them?

  25. idelsan says:

  26. Colin Pye says:

Her “diaconal ordination” was an especially shabby affair even for the women’s ordination crowd.

It took place in the breakfast room of some chain hotel, with only three others present, and the “communion service” was essentially the four of them sitting at the table looking like a coffee klatsch at Tim Horton’s.

The Mickey and Minnie Mouse water bottle under the chairs was a fitting touch to the sad event.

  27. hwriggles4 says:

Years ago I heard a homily on the Real Presence by a good priest.

This priest mentioned that when he was in seminary (1970s) there were teachers at the Jesuit School of “Bezerkly” that were trying to undermine the Real Presence, saying things like we don’t see cells in the host under the microscope.

Another good priest mentioned that during his seminary days (1970s, possibly early 1980s) Masses were being done on coffee tables and occasionally MD 2020 was wine and store brought bread was sometimes used. Every now and then this reminds me of some of the Masses I attended at a college during the mid 1980s.

As a man who lives in the South I hold respect for my Baptist brethren and friends who like good Catholics uphold traditional marriage, sanctity of life, and Baptist ministers are male.

  28. Semper Gumby says:

“They taught me to pray,” she said. [Pray to….?]” Good one, Fr. Z

idelsan: I took a brief look at her website, one of her blog posts begins: “I went to Mass for the first time in weeks.” Then this: “When it is time for communion, rather than take it with everyone else or remain at my seat, I approach the altar with arms crossed to signify my exclusion. **I want** everyone in the place to see the symbolic image of the male authority rejecting the female priest following her call.”

After that, I spent the next two hours recovering with a John Wayne movie, a six-pack and belching that triggered car alarms.

TRW: “Why should she stop at becoming a priest? While she’s play-acting, why not just declare herself a bishop?”

A weary world eagerly awaits Cosmo magazine to publish her first pastoral letter “Wymyn Good, Men Bad.”

Venerator Sti Lot: Thanks for the info.

All that said, her website photo hints that she should be in rehab, hopefully she’ll return to the straight and narrow. Her bishop is derelict in his duties by not admonishing or excommunicating her.

  29. Semper Gumby says:

GrantM: No problem, just replace that tune with “Ordain a Lady.” You’re welcome!

    Let’s dip into the lyrics:

“I need to give this a whirl
So I can lead the way.”

That’s not a priestly vocation. Padre Pio would have fun with this crowd.

    “Don’t listen to St. Paul
Cuz I can lead the way”

Maybe these lyrics are where the Vatican got their recent idea to dismiss St. Paul.

I think a couple years ago in Germany (what the he** is wrong with that place) there was some bishop who wanted to go on strike in support of wymyn and against Blessed Mary. Like rolling panzers into Poland, it sounds fun, but it’s just not a good idea.

  30. Grumpy Beggar says:

    @Grant M : Thanks for the laugh – I had a reaction similar to that of danus1317 (I wasn’t drinking anything either).

@Colin Pye : I was wondering along similar lines – her current [non] status up until today as a [not] deacon would mean her politically correct [un]official title would have to have been the equally awkward Reverend Mister Anne .

I suspect and suggest the author’s choice of one slippery fish word in this quote from the article was neither incidental nor inadvertent:

“. . . thus breaking the Catholic Church’s ban on the ordination of women and crossing the threshold of formal excommunication.”

The word “ban” gives the reader the impression of something that once was. As far as I know the ordination of women has never existed in the Catholic Church. One cannot “ban” something which never existed. The true meaning of the word “ban” implies that whatever was banned either exists or once existed. It seems the author would like us to somehow be under the impression that the ordination of women to the ministerial priesthood once existed in our Church. It didn’t !

Saying that in the Catholic Church the ordination of women is “banned” makes about as much sense as saying that the fourth [not]person of the Holy Trinity is “banned.”

Padre, thank you. You hit my funny bone a couple of times with this one. And you said , “National Schismatic Reporter, like a schismatic jackhammer, keeps pounding away.”

Ahh yes. . . the schismatic jackhammer: It is the preferred tool of jackasses.

    [I can’t believe I wrote that – I just went to Confession this morning . . .dohhh!]

  31. Grant M says:

Thanks for the suggestion, Semper Gumby, but I still have the lyrics of Father Anne running through my head:

    A Fa-fa-fa, fa-father Anne,
    Fa-fa-fa, fa-father Anne,
    Oh you’re the man..
You got me falling and a sliding,
    Near apostasizing,
    Father Anne…etc.

    Went to Albuquerque,
    Seeking something quirky,
    Saw Father Anne,
And I said: this ain’t no turkey!
    Father Anne…

    Tried Father Chad,
    Tried Father Rad,
    Tried Father Trad,
But they all were really BAD,
    Father Anne…

  32. That she would claim her decision was founded on, and influenced by, St. Loyola;s exercises and the modern day Jesuits, kind of says it all as to the fruits of that association.

Suppression of the Company is long overdue.

  33. “God is asking me to do this,” she says. “God is calling me to be ordained in the Roman Catholic tradition and to work for justice.”

Her god is not my God.

  34. Simon_GNR says:

    Archicantator:
‘As one old Anglican observed, “It seems to me that this new Holy Spirit is doing things the Holy Ghost would never have done.” ‘

Fr Z has given Archicantator his Gold Star. Might I add my own “thumbs-up”? Almost a “LOL” comment for me when I read it.

  35. Semper Gumby says:

GrantM: I should not have encouraged you. Those lyrics will haunt me the rest of my days.

    “Went to Albuquerque,
    Seeking something quirky”

On the other hand, let’s say WymynCherch assigns Fr. Anne to a parish in New York, whaddya’ got that rhymes with “Schenectady”?

  36. Semper Gumby says:

Maybe Fr. Anne and MGen. Jo are kindred souls for the greater glory of Wymyn.

    https://www.twitter.com/JackPosobiec/status/1449485804376625163

MGen. Jo is a real heroine, er, herox. People trapped in Afghanistan will quietly say a prayer in the dark as shex makes herx way bravely and wymynly through a cruel and unjust world.

Taxpaying citizens marvel at herx bold resistance to the unjust regulations shex volunteered to obey. Verily, there has been no shining display of command presence, military bearing and inspirational leadership since Chesty Puller and Patton.

Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of herox. Let the portrait of George Washington at Valley Forge kneeling in prayer in the snow be stricken from the national memory. Let a new image, a new souljher be enshrined: MGen. Jo, feet on herx coffee table, staring at and demanding others stare at, her well-manicured and well-protected fingernails.

Huzzah! To the ramparts, lads! Harken to herx words and let each man on this day of days do his duty.

“I am MGen. Jo. And I see a whole army of wymyn and wymyn-adjacent, here in defiance of tyranny! You have come to fight as liberated wymyn. And liberated wymyn you are! What will you do with that liberation? Will you manicure?”

“Aye. Manicure and you may be out of uniform. But dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and whine to citizens and dead veterans that they may take our manicures but they will never take our liberation! Waaahh! Wymyn!”

  37. OssaSola says:

“God is asking me to do this”. What “god” would that be? Perhaps she’s receiving messages from Pachamama…

  38. Grant M says:

Semper Gumby: “Schenectady?” Tough challenge. I’m not from the USA so I had to look up the pronunciation of Albuquerque on Wikipedia. Likewise Schenectady. It seems this ignorant kiwi has been saying the name wrong all these years. So it DOESN’T rhyme with “lady”, which had possibilities.

  39. Josephus Corvus says:

Grant M – Maybe you could ask that famous recording artist Zuhlio to record that song for you. I’m sure it’s the next hit!

  40. Semper Gumby says:

GrantM: Yep, that’s a tough one. All I got for Schenectady is Haugen melody.

  41. JonathanTX says:

From a progressive catholic point of view, the idea of women priests is actually quite reactionary. Why, the German bishops are already voting on whether there even needs to be a priesthood at all: https://www.domradio.de/themen/reformen/2021-10-01/95-zu-94-stimmen-debatte-ueber-abschaffung-von-priesteramt-katholischer-kirche

Seems like “Father Anne” is already behind the times!
