This being Holy Thursday, it is not inappropriate to comment on a possible origin of the “pro multis” mis-translation. In Bl. Maria Agreda’s The Mystical City of God, at Paragraph 519 of my Kindle edition, she (or Mary herself) compares God’s charity to the sun, which sheds its light and warmth upon everyone — without distinction.
So that may have been at least one source of the V-II reforner’s wishful thinking.
Checking the passage more carefully, this seems to be Bl. Maria Agreda’s own disquisition on God’s charity — and does not purport to be from the Virgin Mary herself.
But this poorly educated nun was chanelling someone.
Bergsma’s book on Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls talks about how “the many” was a Hebrew/Aramaic expression found in a lot of Essene documents.
For the Essenes, it basically meant “those who are faithful Essenes.”
