You’ll be happy to know that the city govt has closed off to cars the area in front of the church and down the street to the left along its side.

Many thanks to several of you who have sent donations by Zelle or PayPal earmarked for a replacement for my washing machine, which has “run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible”. I went to an appliance store yesterday after OTB (won one, lost one) and spotted a washer dryer set which I think is an appropriate acquisition. I don’t impulse buy, so I am mulling and continuing my searches but I’d like to wrap this up today.

BONUS SHOT
These are not clams.
These are telline.
Right now, from 23 Aug to 1 Sept at Rome’s ancient port city Ostia (where St. Augustine’s mother Monica died) there is the “sagra della tellina”. They have a fishing boat procession and “marriage with the sea” with a statue of Mary Stella Maris and then eat spaghetti with telline. Telline are smaller than the clams called vongole and they have a sweeter taste. They are, in fact, marvelous.
The Great Roman™ and I have on occasion consumed kilos of these little wonders.
In St. Louis the Sinquefield Cup, the last stage of the Grand Chess Tour, is wrapping up. Alas, “Puer” won. The battle is for 2nd. Yesterday, Wesley and MLV drew. So did everyone else. Today, we shall see who comes in second. Wesley plays the world champ challenger Gukesh with black.
Meanwhile, white to move and mate in 2.
NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.
And there is this…
When El Duque tossed his ENTIRE glove to first ? pic.twitter.com/RcU5yW1nh2

I always enjoyed watching El Duque play. I still remember how he played during that 2005 championship season for the Chicago White Sox. It was the ALDS, and the Red Sox had gotten the bases loaded, no one out with the White Sox up 4-3 in the 6th inning. El Duque enters in a relief role, and was cool, calm and collected. He pops up the first two batter he sees, and then strikes out Johnny Damon to get out of the jam, and the White Sox go on to win the series that same day, and then to win the championship. Hearing pitching coach Don Cooper tell the story in less than 90 seconds is legendary:

Maybe, Father, you can keep posting the baseball goodies alongside the “chessy” news? I shared that Mr. Ed clip with some good, solid Catholic men. All baseball fans. I suppose the two are just meant to go together…?
1. Qg8 Qxg8
2. Nxg8 #
or 1. Qg8 e6 or e5
2. Qe6#
The guy on third should have broke for home as soon as he saw the glove being tossed. There is no way the first baseman could have dug the ball out and thrown home in time.
Although it would have been funny to see him try to heave the entire glove a second time.
It took me a little longer to find the first move here.
1. Qg8 Qxg8 2. Nxg8#
OR
1. Qg8 g6 2. Qxg6#
Haha, that’s awesome. My husband remembers it. Baseball has so many moments, in a way other sports just don’t.
What a play!
Best washer drier set I ever had was an LG front loading washer and drier. Had water hookup into the drier so you could steam dry and dry clean clothes. Wifi enabled so control from anywhere in the world. Washer door would pop over after cycle so no mildew issues. Pedestals for them and cool deep red. 12 years ago the set was like $7k…so about the cost of a kidney now I’d imagine. Seemed like an extravagance at the time, but it was the best appliance I’ve ever owned.
Father, I hope you check out Consumer Reports for ratings or another reliable source. There are so many from which to choose and some are real lemons! Haven’t looked lately, but good luck.
