Interim, motus ad lusorem cum militibus albis pertinent. Scaccus mattus, scilicet mors regis, duobus in motis veniat.

In Budapest, Ukraine took down these USA, alas.  55 year old Vasyl Ivanchuk bested my guy Wesley So who, alas, gave up a winning position.  Vasyl is called the greatest player never to be champ, and he pounced.  15 years ago, 16 yar old So knocked Ivanchuk out of the World Cup.

In chess, it can be ONE MOVE.   Boy, is that true.

Yesterday I played my first rated game in 50 years.  With black I was crushing my strong opponent against the Pirc and, on about move 30, I blundered a piece.  And it wasn’t even a subtle thing that I missed.  It was just plain stupid of me.  Loss of discipline before picking up the piece.  That last scan of the board.  I fought on in vain for some 30 moves, but in vain.

I was so upset with myself.  What a disappointing start for re-rating.   I saw a video of Wesley from the game.  He looked like I felt.   Very hard.

    Persevere.

Hungary beat Italy.  India beat Serbia.  China beat Armenia.  Vietnam beat Uzbekistan!  Norway beat Slovakia.

    2. Q×f3#
    If . . . . . . . N-e2 (only other move)
    2. K×e2# (discovered)

Black has only two moves, both with his Knight. If 1. . . . Ne2, then 2. KxN disc ch is mate.
And if Black plays 1. . . . NxPch. then 2. Kf2 disc ch is mate.
