Diocese of Scranton: Good News – TLM community given a great new church

I received a note that a FSSP TLM personal parish in the Diocese of Scranton has been given a lovely church for their use, St. Lucy.

I’ve tried to open diocesan links but, at the time of this writing none of them will open.

Looking at Facebook for the Diocese of Scranton I found THIS:

We’ll see how the clergy and parishioners of Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in Scranton recently celebrated the closing Mass of Saint Michael Church and the first official Mass at their new home at Saint Lucy’s Church.

I did a little searching for images of St. Lucy’s in Scranton.  It looks like a huge place and quite suited.   It has its roots in the massive influx of Italian (legal) immigrants back in the day.

Do I sense here, perhaps, the heavenly intercession of the late, great, “Extraordinary Ordinary”, Bishop Robert C. Morlino… born in Scranton…?

AGAIN…. it is to be asked…

If Scranton… why not Charlotte?  Why not Knoxville?  Why not Monterey?  Why not Detroit?

If I were a member of the faithful in those places I’d be asking … WHY there and not HERE?

Why? Father, I think the quote you repeat for us here very often tells us exactly why:
The Church is full of old ladies, of both sexes …

  2. JMody: The actual quote is

There are old women of both sexes.

    “Ladies” implies good manners.

I remember that church. I was there with the internal forum director and some brother seminarians from my first seminary. That priest was the chaplain for the Charismatic Renewal and St. Lucy is where they gathered then. I didn’t enjoy that service (Mass? Vespers? can’t remember.) Honest. Pentecostal “speaking in tongues” is a spiritual practice I have never felt comfortable around. If I remember it correctly, it has a beautiful Venetian glass chandelier hanging from a painted dome–and a squeaky wooden floor. Though honestly I could be conflating some places. It’s been many years. Anyway, if I do remember it correctly it should indeed be very suited to the new purpose. Perhaps someone from Scranton will tell us more.

Hah! This is WONDERFUL news for this family. One of my children is living in Scranton for the next 3 yrs after having just started their graduate school for nurse anesthetists in August. I’ll be sure to tell them a TLM is in their midst. Thank you for sharing, Fr. Z!

Or OAKLAND, CA, where the ICKSP was given a 3 week notice to leave on Easter Sunday with 1st communions 2 weeks after. Even though they’d been here for 20 years without their own parish.
