What a difference a few minutes can make. If they fail to score, they’re out, they score in stoppage time and win the group.
Amazing.
That game was a real treat! Very emotional. The guys were very persistent, risking a counter-attack they put all their energy into offense: missed a bunch of times till – with only a few minutes left in the game – a lightning fast run down the middle of the field and some quick thinking (combined with a bit of luck?) produced a score that saved the team from being sent home. Wow. Among the many celebrities in the audience former Pres. Bill Clinton: I wonder what that was about?
Anyway: I love foot… ehm, soccer, especially because it is a game played by everage looking people. You don’t have to be a 300 lb giant, or a seven foot girafe, you just need to be young and healthy. Great game. My only gripe is the commentators: why do we need all these brits commenting on ESPN? The message for your people is that soccer is not a sport for Americans. I never really liked soccer and I’ve always hated “Stoppage” time. Today has gone a long ways to change my mind.

Great! GREATER! GREATEST! –even if USA loses the other matches. This is a great win because the prisoners at Gitmo were allowed to watch the match! They (of course) were hoping Algeria would win; the guards were instructed to be professional regardless of the match outcome. Thank God team USA gained this psychological win.

My only gripe is the commentators: why do we need all these brits commenting on ESPN? The message for your people is that soccer is not a sport for Americans. Can’t they find some Americans to narrate the games? Some use a nearly incomprehensible variety of English. Almost makes me want to watch it in Spanish, but there you get the Mexican drama queens. The Spanish commentators are the best…the English commentators can’t match the enthusiasm of the Spanish commentators.
I was chuckling a bit listening to the (Scottish?) commentator…I could barely understand his English.
The American John Harkes has done a good job on the broadcasts. I like having one American and one Englishman on the English broadcast…it gives you a wider perspective to have a European there.
The foreign comentators, Brits or otherwise, bring more of a historical context and add color. Our best players still need to play abroad to increase their soccer IQ at the highest levels. An x NBA player would make a good commentator for B-Ball in any part of the world, barring a language barrier. For some reason Americans, to my experience, have been pretty dry as commentators or play by play for soccer, with a few exceptions, Alexi Lalas comes to mind. Listen to Spanish TV and the broadcasters for their soccer, just a whole ‘nuther level of passion for the game. It takes a lot of experience to produce a Harry Carry or Vin Scully or John Madden. We don’t even have a Bill Walton type announcer for soccer yet. Someone with wit and real flair for relating the nuances of the game without dumbing down the game for the increasingly savvy audience.
