Happy 60th Anniversary to “Nostra Aetate”!

Yesterday 28 October was 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, Vatican II’s Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions. The document was drafted in part by Fr. Gregory Baum (1923-2017). Baum left the priesthood and religious life, married a former nun, and admitted to having engaged in homosexual activity throughout his adult life beginning in 1963, during the Council.

So now you know the other part of the story.

The Augustinians have given us Pope Leo XIV. They have given us many martyrs, saints and blesseds, including St. Thomas of Villanova and St. Nicholas of Tolentino. They also gave us the scientist, Gregor Mendel.

They also counted Martin Luther among their brethren, until he left them for an ex-nun and for “all kinds of strange teachings” (Hebrews 13:9).

Unfortunately, Gregory Baum was once one of theirs. He publicly dissented from many Church teachings, well before he left them and married an ex-nun, and later admitted to a history other sexual sins. Nostra Aetate was not his work alone, but he had a big part in writing it.

The document condemns anti-semitism, but does not actually define what it means. Perhaps someone should submit a “dubium,” asking for a definition.

The popular understanding of “anti-semitism” is far too dependent on the the latest statements of groups like the Anti-Defamation League and the Israeli Knesset.
Not everything that the ADL objects to belongs under that umbrella.

I was tempted to translate that epithet into Latin, but then I thought otherwise.

The Pope name-dropped Cardinal Bea yesterday, who, if I’m not mistaken, was a Zionist. He was also listed as a Mason in the Bulletin de l’Occident Chrétien Nr.12, July, 1976. (Who knows if this Bulletin is true, though).

I find Nostra Aetate a deeply disturbing document, to say the least.

Some pieces of information can move us to sadness, as if darkness wants to swallow the light.
