POLL: Which is scarier?

A serious question, but you are only qualified if you have watched some si-fi movies.

Which is scarier

The xenomorph (from the original Alien or Aliens)

The nasty critters in The Tomorrow War.

I picked these two, because there are two versions of each.  In the case of The Tomorrow War the males and the female.  In the case of Alien, yes there males and the female, but in particular there is the “facehugger”.   (Full Disclosure: I just saw The Tomorrow War to the accompaniment of a doctored up sausage, pepperoni and mushroom pizza, which – now that I think about it – I haven’t done for several years).

Speaking of scary, my pizza cutter.

Yes, it’s sharp.  Don’t walk up behind me suddenly while I’m using it.

Frankly, I don’t think either the Predator or the Terminators are as scary, no matter how lethal.   Yeah… I know there are other candidates, like “Touchme” Fernandez or SJ Jasmine, but they are not relevant to the question.

Anyone can vote, but only registered and approved members can comment.  I hope you will.

I expect a very high voter turn out for this serious question.  After all, my Poll about the “sign of peace” in the Novus Ordo only has some 26K votes.

Which is scarier?

There’s no question that Alien and Aliens are the better movies. And I think, because there better filmed, the creatures are scarier in the movies. But the White Spikes have a lethal, fast, and very accurate range weapon. In any kind of real life scenario, that’s got me more scared than the xenomorph.

So I voted for the White Spikes. I’d probably still wind up dead, either way.

One of the freakiest and scariest mental horror films made: Event Horizon. Because for a sci-fi film it does treat the philosophy of an afterlife, especially hell, seriously.

NB. Nudity warning in small flashes for this film, if you haven’t seen it.

  3. pcg says:

I voted Alien, but I think the sign of peace is actually scarier-

  4. revueltos67 says:

I voted for the xenomorphs. That said, scariest for me are the robot dogs from the Dark Mirror Metalhead episode because they have a very good chance of becoming real.

  5. revueltos67 says:

    Oops, meant Black Mirror.

  6. Kevin P says:

I never saw The Tomorrow War. IMHO, the xenomorph from Alien was much scarier before we saw it.

  7. Philmont237 says:

The white spikes hunt you en mass, and simply kill you. Sure, they look freaky (especially that first good shot of you that you get), but they seem to be just a generic monster.
The Xenomorph, however, stalks you in the dark. It’s goal is not necessarily to kill you, but to breed using you as an incubator. The process to do so is horrifying. The face hugger latches onto your face, shoves its whatever down your throat, and implants a Xenomorph infant inside of you. Then that thing bursts out of your chest when you aren’t expecting it. Only after that does it try to kill everything else in the ship.
This is so much more frightening than a generic monster that can shoot spikes.

Plus, Alien and Aliens are much better movies than The Tomorrow War. They’re a masterclass in horror, sci-fi, and suspense. The story itself is satisfying. Meanwhile, the premise of Tomorrow War is interesting, but the execution is horrible. They spend the entire time trying to develop a toxin to kill the queen White Spike, and wind up just killing her the old fashioned way in the end. The whole movie was pointless because of its ending.
Ryan George on YouTube has an excellent “Pitch Meeting” that describes everything wrong with that movie in just a few minutes. It’s hilarious.

I think that “pizza” looks scarier than anything in those movies.

  9. amenamen says:

I have not seen either movie. So, I didn’t vote.

But I did enjoy the humorous synopsis in the Ryan George Pitch Meeting for Tomorrow Wars. (Thank you, Philmont237).

    E. Michael Jones has some dreadful observations about many horror movies, especially Alien. It might spoil your liking for it.

  10. happymom says:

Amenamen, what does E. Michael Jones comment? I’d like to see it. God bless your day!

  11. Venerator Sti Lot says:

I have not seen The Tomorrow War and so cannot compare.

Nor had I heard of E. Michael Jones’s book, but find the WorldCat has an entry for Horror: A Biography as published by “Spence Pub. Co., Dallas, Tex., 2002” and with the note “Previously published under the title: Monsters from the Id” – and a list of the contents, while I see elsewhere a listing for Monsters from the Id: The Rise of Horror in Fiction and Film from the same publisher (in 2000).

  12. TonyO says:

I think the Alien Xenomorph is scarier. The method of death is so horrific.

However, I would rate John W. Campbell’s “Who Goes There” as one of the scariest SF stories out there. The conclusion leaves you totally freaked that maybe it’s really out there.

  13. EAW says:

Alien and Aliens are better movies, but I think the whitespikes are slightly scarier.

  14. Venerator Sti Lot says:

    TonyO,

Thanks for pointing to John W. Campbell’s “Who Goes There” – to my mind that is scarier than Alien (which I have seen). If you have not yet compared and contrasted his earlier Blake and Penton novellette “The Brain Stealers of Mars”, in Thrilling Wonder Stories, December 1936, you might enjoy doing so – the original is scanned in the Internet Archive in volume 8 number 3.
