Some chessy news…
In the Tata Steel tournament in Calcutta, one of the most discussed moments yesterday arose in my guy Wesley’s So’s round 6 game against Praggnanandhaa. With a second remaining on the clock, Pragg stopped play because he could not immediately locate a queen to promote his pawn. Under the regulations, So was entitled to claim a win. Instead, Wesley offered a draw. Afterward, So explained that his Pragg intended to promote but panicked when no queen was available – he reached for a rook even though there was a queen next to the clock – and stopped the clock to summon the arbiter. So added that he prefers to win games over the board rather than by technical claims. That decision, together with the way Wesley publicly gives praise to Christ when he wins, is why he remains my choice in these matches. He could have taken the full point. A gentleman and a sportsman, he offered a draw.
And, speaking of chess…
When you start a chess game, you have 20 moves available (16 for pawn and 2 for one knight). After completing the first movement you have more than 40 different possibilities. And 8900 in the third and 197740 in the fourth. In the 40s there will be 10 puissance 40 possibilities.… pic.twitter.com/c8mT6lvPGu

And a video about cats… which is what the internet is for… and ancient Rome, because after all men think of ancient Rome several dozen times a day.

Black to move and mate in 4.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

With Black moving first:
1. RxP+ Kh1 (if Kf1, QxR+ is mate)
2. Rh2+ RxR
3. Qf3+ Rg2
4. QxR+ mate.
Re: Cardinal Burke: Huzzay!!!
Wordle was tough today.
My 1st 3 word choices lead me to the 1st green letter in the fourth row. Took me awhile to think of a word that started with that letter. My guess in the 4th row was incorrect but gave me an idea for the correct answer in row 5.
Probably safe to assume The Daily Rome Shot with Card Burke was snapped by The World’s Greatest Sacristan.
Kudos to him, for this is truly award winning.
Thanks for the cartoon enjoyment.
One of my wishes is that in the future there will be rich beautiful liturgical books, particularly Missals.
@ Fr. Reader: The current editions are lackluster, especially compared to the editions from before VC2. Your wish is my wish, the Church should do better.
Those who are praying for a renewal in the publishing industry will be interested to know that newly-anointed houses will be responsible for the new Liturgy of the Hours: Ascension Press and Word on Fire Ministries. So the old-guard, Catholic Book Publishing Co., and others, will no longer be in charge. Keeping in mind how much care and artistry went into the latter’s Bible publications, I believe that we’re in for a treat. Not to mention, a more robust handling of electronic publications, as well. Has anyone else tried the Ascension Press app? Fr. Mike Schmitz has read the entire Bible, and several have produced audio rosaries. It’s a fantastic subscription, just for those features!
