PODCAzT 20: Leo the Great and Benedict - Habemus Papam!

CATEGORY: NAPLAM, PODCAzT, SESSIUNCULA — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 11:15 pm

Today’s PODCAzT takes us to the 5th century to spend some time with Leo the Great, Pope from 440-461.  Leo was very conscious of the primacy of the Bishop of Rome among all the bishops of the world.  Also, today I talk about the anniversary of the election of Pope Benedict, 2 years ago today!  I have some audio of the annoucement "Habemus Papam!" and his first speech.  On the way out there is the audio of his first Urbi et Orbi Blessing.

    Enjoy!

WDTPRS participant Vincenzo found the Fox News video. Go to this web page at the Fox News site:

Then scroll down – on the left side you’ll see “Papal Video.” Select “Ratzinger Elected New Pope.”

More direct link (works with Firefox, but maybe not IE).

Subscribe to Z feed You will even hear commentary from Fr. Z!

What an outstanding podcast, Father! Exceptionaly thoughtful and interesting, and very well done. Your reading and historical background of the Fathers gives so much to think and pray about—it made my day. Three cheers for Pope Leo the Great and Pope Benedict XVI!
      In Christ,

    2. Nathan: Thanks for the feedback. Without it, I have no idea if people listen to these things!

    3. Oh, we definitely listen to them, Father! Of course, some of us should be writing papers instead of listening to them…but…er, um….
Seriously, thanks for the patristic fun! My housemates all enjoy listening to you, too.

    4. I have been thinking I need some AUDIO feedback from listeners which I can incorporate into the PODCAzTS. Opinions?

    5. I’m game to send you audio feedback when, or if, you ask for it. However, my voice would do your PODCAzTS no favors. Too gravelly, too low, too nasal. Not to mention my Midwestern/Iron Range accent, doncha know? Well, I guess that makes it distinctive, eh?

    6. The video clip moves me to tears, as just about every video of Ratzinger does. But I still have to protest once more the business of having an English translation drown out the voice of the pope. Why can’t they just let us hear what we would have heard had we been there?

    7. JosephM: I couldn’t agree more. That drives me crazy!

    8. EWTN sells a dvd of the pope’s election in which, IIRC, the Holy Father’s words are not dubbed over with a translation.

That reminds me – I’ve been thinking that Father Z. should have his own TV program. Wonderful podcast thank you.

    11. Good work and well made. Thankyou.

So how do I get them onto my I-Pod?

      Comment by Dale — 20 April 2007 @ 3:54 pm
    12. Viva il Papa indeed!

Your podcast was (once again) excellent. This podcast, with this beautiful setting of Tu es Petrus in the background, instilled a great emotion in me as I was once again reminded of the great nature and lineage of the Papacy. The Pope is a living reminder of the continuation of Christ’s guidance and love for the Church and the whole of humanity. I will never forget when Pope Benedict XVI was elected in 2005.

Thank you Father for this great online ministry.

      Comment by Jonathan Bennett — 22 April 2007 @ 6:25 am
    13. Can anyone tell me which setting for Tu es Petrus is used at the end of this podcast? I recognize da Palestrina for the composition at the begining, but the one at the end with the organ is new to me, but the effect of having the audio of the Holy Father’s Blessing overlayed there is amazing.

      Thank you in advance!
