About this blog…
“This blog is like a fusion of the Baroque ‘salon’ with its well-tuned harpsichord around which polite society gathered for entertainment and edification and, on the other hand, a Wild West “saloon” with its out-of-tune piano and swinging doors, where everyone has a gun and something to say. Nevertheless, we try to point our discussions back to what it is to be Catholic in this increasingly difficult age, to love God, and how to get to heaven.” – Fr. Z

- The most evident mark of God’s anger and the most terrible castigation He can inflict upon the world are manifested when He permits His people to fall into the hands of clerics who are priests more in name than in deed, priests who practice the cruelty of ravening wolves rather than the charity and affection of devoted shepherds.

“Until the Lord be pleased to settle, through the instrumentality of the princes of the Church and the lawful ministers of His justice, the trouble aroused by the pride of a few and the ignorance of some others, let us with the help of God endeavor with calm and humble patience to render love for hatred, to avoid disputes with the silly, to keep to the truth and not fight with the weapons of falsehood, and to beg of God at all times that in all our thoughts and desires, in all our words and actions, He may hold the first place who calls Himself the origin of all things.”

Don’t rely on popes, bishops and priests.
“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”- Fulton Sheen

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II

Let us pray…
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

Am I mistaken? Do I see some NAC’rs in there? What a great sign of hope! God bless them and all the attendees.
Thanks for sharing the pictures Padre.
Fantastic photos. Brings back a lot of great memories of Rome.
Great photos and thank you, Father Z! Father Andrew looks well – Rome must agree with him!
And more photos continue to be uploaded. Nice!!
Father John Horgan!
great pictures!
Thanks, jameeka! I was trying to remember his name. What is the name of his order? Something to do with angels I think.
Well, I googled “Fr. Horgan”, jameeka, and he is a priest of the archdiocese of Vancouver. But he did a series on angels for EWTN. I need more coffee!
Thank you for the beautiful pictures Fr. Am always glad to see the Holy Father. The pictures are saying to me “The Church is alive…”. Am so glad you got to be there.
joan ellen, I believe Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments celebrated the TLM Mass.
From what I have learned from other websites, thousands were in attendance despite the early morning hour for the procession and Mass.

Beautiful inspiring occasion! Thank for posting pictures!
Beautiful inspiring occasion! Thank for posting pictures!
Why does the last priest in the procession have a stole?
Who are the priest’s in blue?
AnnAsher- one of the priests in blue appears to be MSGR. Gilles Wach of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. They wear blue. I’d like to know who the plump, amiable priest smiling outside is. He seems so jovial!
@AnnAsher
The priests in blue are from the Institute of Christ the King.
Father, thank you for the lovely pictures!
Magnificent.
Great pictures.
Thank you Father Z.
Ohhhh to have been there on this day.
My heart longs for the return of this Mass world wide anywhere anytime.

It’s good to see Fr. John Horgan from our Archdiocese.
God bless!
You know, esteemed Father Zuhlsdorf , you lead a charmed life…
Is that San Salvatore in Lauro? Do I recall recorrectly that the great Eugene IV of the Council of Florence is buried there? That, starting on Via dei Coronari, is certainly an approach to St. Peter’s rich with historical precendent! Thanks for posting!
You take great photos, Fr. Z. Thank you for sharing. Looking at them brought back wonderful memories. It’s just so right to have the Holy Father in Rome/Vatican City and not in Avignon, France. I mean Avignon has its own charm but it just doesn’t compare to Rome/Vatican City. When I got my first look of St. Peter’s Basilica years ago it was like, whoa! What a marvellous work of art.
Rome is full of beautiful Churches but St. Peter’s stands out.
Yay! Fr. John Horgan!
Mrs. Gratias and I arrived straight from California 10 minutes before the procession entered St. Peter’s. The area from the baldacchino to the Altar of Chair (in which St. Peter’s chair was preserved covered in brass by Bernini) was packed full of faithful. Difficult to count but maybe 1 and 2 thousand people. There were at least 50 priests processing in.
There were some peculiarities in this mass that were different to what we see here in California. There was a Cantor that was sometimes joined by a schola of priests. But many verses were chanted (loudly) by all present, the Romans knew exactly when. This applied for the Gloria, Kyrie, Abnus Dei, Dominum non sum dignus for communicants (which always done), and the long gregorian Deo Gratias after the ite Missa est. This participatio activa was a great improvement to the Mass, I thought.
Cardinal Canizares sat at the left of the altar facing directly to the public most of the time. He read the sermon sitting on this chair as well. The Gospel was about “Mulier, ecce filius Tuus”. Mariae Matri Ecclesiae. The Immaculate Heart of Mary prays for and protects us her children. By restoring the EF mass the Holy Father has given the Church a great gift. This Mass Cum Papa Nostro is a sign of communion and obedience to the Pope, explained the Cardinal.
Many young people but none of the large families with lots of babies we are used to in traditional masses here in the USA. We are doing our part at keeping the Faith in America too.
It was a great honor to be part of this historic pilgrimage. Michelangelo built St. Peter’s Basilica for Masses such as this one. A great day for all the Catholic Church.
Gratias Benedictus XVI. Viva!
Yes, that’s our esteemed Msgr. Wach. What a treat to see him. Thank you Father.
Bellisima! How one wishes to be in attendance! Sia Lodato Gesu Cristo!
