Over at The Crescat, there is a fine photo.

With a little imagination you might think the Holy Father was being carried…. carried…

As much as I love tradition, would a return to the sedia gestatoria be wise considering the importance of security and safety of His Holiness the Pope? I think about the footage I’ve seen of the assassination attempt on the Servant of God, Pope John Paul the Great… the “popemobile” was able to quickly speed him away for medical attention. Had he been using the sedia gestatoria… Just a thought…

This is the pope who refused a bullet-proof vest when visiting Turkey. I don’t think security will impact his decision to use the sedia gestatoria in the slightest.

He could just use the sedia in St. Peter’s itself. The point of the sedia is to allow the faithful to see the Pope. The Popemobile does this admirably, but only outside.

Excellent idea, dcs! Sounds safe AND traditional!
