Rev. Mr. Charles White IV is to be ordained priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit by Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron on Saturday, May 30th.
His first Mass as celebrant, will be in the Extraordinary Form – a Solemn High Mass on Pentecost Sunday, May 31st, 2009 at 9:30am at Assumption Grotto parish in Detroit, Michigan.
This is an opportunity to not only attend a Solemn High Mass and a "First Mass" in metro Detroit for Pentecost, but it will be an orchestra Mass conducted by Grotto’s pastor, Rev. Eduard Perrone (Mozart’s Missa in C Major, KV 256 – aka, the "Credo Mass"). This orchestra Mass music will be repeated again for Corpus Christi at Noon on Sunday, June 14, 2009.

How wonderful that Archbishop Vigneron has the opportunity to ordain Father White. Does anyone know if Father White is the Archbishop’s first ordination in Detroit? Tom

Is this a “First Mass” as in with an “Arch-priest”? Is that tradition defunct even in the EF?
And if properly disposed, you can get an indulgenced “first blessing” after Mass.

Every EF first solemn high Mass I’ve seen in recent years has been celebrated with the assistance of a coped archpriest. I cannot imagine that anyone anywhere might consider such a tradition “defunct even in the EF”.

There will be an Arch-priest. I have known Dcn Charles White IV for a couple of years now and am honored to be photographing the Mass. Watch for a photopost on my blog.
The Arch-priest will be Fr. Paul Ward of Assumption Grotto and the sub-deacon will be Fr. John Bustamante, also an associate. I will leave the deacon a mystery for now.
Ordinations are beginning in an hour and will be livestreaming from Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. We have six men being ordained, five for the Archdiocese of Detroit; one for Cameroon. Please pray for all being ordained this spring!

Tom – I don’t know if Dcn Charles will be first of the 6 men ordained or not. My guess is that it may end up going alphabetically. While I do not personally know the other men being ordained, I am familiar with several of them. All I can say is that they give me great hope for the future of our church. They have the mind of the Church.
So that things don’t get confused, this is an Ordinary Form Mass for the ordinations. Dcn Charles will be ordained a diocesan priest, but – like a number of seminarians I know, found himself attracted to the Extraordinary Form. He has been studying the particulars of this Mass at least since Summorum Pontificum. He has assisted as a deacon in a previous Solemn High Mass, after he became a transitional deacon (perhaps last Pentecost).

Tom – these ordinations will be the first for Vigneron as Archbishop of Detroit, if that is what you were asking. He was installed in January (I was there to photograph that Installation Mass too, but regret I cannot be at the Cathedral today).

Thanks for bringing this up. For anyone local who will be assisting at the Mass, you are welcome to come to the gymn following the Mass where a reception will be held (pot-luck), and people can meet with, and get that precious “first blessing”.
It had to be done this way because the Solemn High Mass runs about 1:45 and will not leave much time to set up for the Noon OF Mass.
If you can bring something to the pot-luck, fine. If not, fine. Parishioners are covering.
We’re also from Detroit. If we didn’t have a first Mass being celebrated at OUR parish by one of our parishoners, we would be at this Mass!!
To elaborate on my above comment. This is not to say that we’re preferring one over the other, but to say how happy we are to be familiar with both parishes and with the new priests !
Is there a different ordination of priests in the Gregorian Rite as compared to the novus Ordo ordination? Will only the mass be in the Gregorian Rite? Will the ordination be in the Novus Ordo?

We will be paying for the current wreckovation for many years to come. Don’t expect Blessed Sacrament Cathedral to undergo a re-redo any time in the next couple of decades. In fact, remember that this is Detroit, where the unemployment rate is very high, and rising every week. All parishes, and the archdiocese are impacted.
