I surrender!
I feel like a university campus telephone pole.
I am being flooded with e-mail about Masses and processions for Corpus Christi, both today and the transferred observance on Sunday.
While this is great, I just can’t post everything, today especially.
Use this entry for CORPUS CHRISTI announcements ONLY.
Keep ’em concise… that means short.
Open rabbit holes at your peril.

I attend Blessed Sacrament parish in Springfield, Illinois, so Corpus Christi is our parish feast day.
We had not had a Corpus Christi procession for decades. Then, six, maybe seven years ago, our former pastor (now the Bishop Kevin Vann of Fort Worth, Texas) and his assistant (now our pastor, Fr. David Hoefler) were rummaging around in a crawl space in the basement and found, hidden in the dust, the old silk canopy that had been used in parish Eucharistic processions in years gone by. Who stuffed it there, and why, is anybody’s guess. They also found an old black biretta.
So then-Monsignor Vann and Fr. Hoefler got both items cleaned up and reinstated the annual Corpus Christi procession, done as it was in the old days — around the block in the parish’s neighborhood, with the pastor, wearing the biretta, holding our Lord up high above his head in a magnificent golden monstrance, and four men holding the silk canopy over his head (it is held aloft with shiny wooden posts), with stops at four stations along the route to adore our Lord with the Tantum Ergo, Pange Lingua, and other traditional hymns. Oh yeah, there’s a thirible and plenty of incense too.
The stations are in the front yards of parishoners who live in the neighborhood. The whole thing takes about an hour (it is a large block — from the parish we go south on Walnut Street, then west for a block on Ash, then back north again on Glenwood Street, then back to the parish, on Laurel) and police re-direct traffic so we don’t get run over. It is a wonderful, pious, public, and communal display of Eucharistic piety and, yes, CATHOLIC IDENTITY.
And in Springfield, Illinois, too. Brick by heavy brick, as you said back in January when you posted the news of our weekly TLM at Blessed Sacrament. This year I am bringinga camera and will post pictures on my blog afterward.

We have been having a procession around the town plaza for the last several years, but this year we’re having a longer procession on Sunday going further out into the town, past the now-vacant site of a church whose first building was built in the late 16th century and which is the predecessor of our current Cathedral. It is wonderful to think that we are following the route probably taken by our Catholic predecessors here centuries ago.
The pastor was hoping to get permission for Benediction in the plaza, but I’m not sure he was able to manage that. In any case, I think it will be great and I hope there’s a good turn out.

“In celebration of the Feast of Corpus Christi, benediction and Eucharistic adoration will be led by Bishop Gregory Aymond on June 14 at 6:30 pm at St. Mary’s. The service will be in English and Spanish. A reception will follow in Bishops Hall. Earlier in the afternoon, a procession with the Blessed Sacrament will begin at Cristo Rey Parish and travel to St. Mary Cathedral arriving there at 6:30 p.m.”
… and a question for any fellow Austinites: does anybody have a clue what time the procession is likely to START? The Cristo Rey website has nothing about it, and their on-line bulletin is from last month.
Given the tragedy that struck Cristo Rey earlier this year, I find it appropriate to begin the procession at their parish church. I’d just like to know what time to show up!
