I think it is important to realize that men can thwart the will of God, because God never possesses us, unlike the Devil. God knows that love and obedience must be freely given. Also true for the Cardinal electors. Pope Benedict, of blessed memory, noted that the Holy Ghost does not choose the Pope. Men choose the Pope. There have been bad popes. If I remember correctly, in the first chapel on the left in Bologna’s St. Petronius Basilica there is a fresco with a bishop in hell. I’m not expecting much. Think of history over the centuries. Some people had bad popes for their entire lives. The fact that my life coincided with the papacy of Benedict is astounding!
My wife and I are praying this novena.
Father, do you have any insight into His Eminence’s use of the word “grave” here? Is it a simple acknowledgement that the conclave is importantly or that the mood music from the General Congregations worrying?
Cardinal Burke’s message was sent out around the same time that Damien Thompson reported that Cardinal Parolin supporters are saying that Cardinal Parolin already has sewn up 50 (subsequently said to be 40) electors.
Our family has begun praying this novena and will continue until the next pope is elected. I have high hopes, as last year’s prayer by Cardinal Burke was so beneficial.
