Garrigou-Lagrange gives the proud soul strong medicine:
“The remedy for pride is to tell ourselves that of ourselves we are not, that we have been created out of nothing by the gratuitous love of God. The remedy for pride is also to tell ourselves that there is in us something inferior to nothingness itself: the disorder of sin and its effects” (The Three Ages of the Interior Life).
To examine our consciences is to shine light into the corners where pride hides like vermin behind garage clutter or rotting food at the back of the refrigerator. Pride reeks, but the devil sprays the air-fresheners of distraction, comparison, indignation, and self-justification. Confession brings the cleansing that pride fiercely resists.

The sermon for the 24th Sunday was brief but impactful. The Dominican priest encapsulated the whole Gospel reading for that Sunday under the word “magnanimity”, a virtue shown by Christ. This was a difficult English word to translate into Filipino. Yet he gave practical examples of this in our daily life within our own cultural context. He also warned us not to confuse forgiveness with pampering or tolerance in the face of evil or wrongdoing. Finally, he concluded the sermon with the words of Our Lord, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.”

FSSP Latin Mass in Venice (Italy), lots of people, more than half who are visitors, some of the regulars have returned from their summer holidays.
Sermon was brilliant. The act of rushing to sit in the higher place is an act of Pride. Satan tried to sit in God’s place, so did Adam and Eve, hence they were sent to the lower places. Committing mortal sins, refusing to follow God’s commandments are similar acts of pride, putting yourself in the place which belongs to God, the higher place. Hence you will end up being sent to the lower spot.
i am often privileged to contribute to these posts. not so this week. i had an emergency hospitalization and surgery with IP stay from Thu-Sat and was too feeble to get out on Sunday thanks to exacerbating a bad back shortly after i got home. Grateful i had confession and anointing before surgery and hopeful to get to vespers on Thursday.
