The Roj-Mahal Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, seat of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (California, United States), hosted on June 27 a musical and theatrical spectacle titled «Aztec Mass». It was not a Eucharistic celebration, but a concert performed in the cathedral’s sanctuary, where the altar area served as the stage for a production that fused the text of the Ordinary of the Mass with Nahuatl poetry, theater, dance, and indigenous instruments.
So, it is the text of the Novus Ordo ordinary, in the sanctuary.

Apparently we can celebrate and honor everything and anything so long as it is not our common patrimony of the Church’s tradition.
Every bishop and priest should have a personal “common sense PR-consultant.” You could walk into the break-room of any factory in your diocese, choose a random guy eating a bologna sandwich, and just ask him, “Hey, we’re thinking about doing a Nahuatl dance ceremony while reading parts of the Mass. Guys wearing feather headresses and Uggs will be dancing around the sanctuary in their underwear. What do you think?”
Invariably, he’d say, “Sounds pretty gay.” And then some other guy at a different table would say, “I thought you guys were Catholic.”
Meanwhile, the folks at the chancery would be saying, “Well, technically it’s not Mass and technically it’s the ‘good parts’ of the pagan religion, so let’s do it and call it ‘inculturation!'”
*Don’t forget the Aztec child sacrifice rituals. This sort of stuff makes an absolute mockery of morality.

Might one suggest that in a proper diocese a proper Bishop would consider this a desecration, with all the consequences thereof? What if a proper Bishop in another diocese were to suggest this? Beginning at the bottom of the inner doors, Graham has sculpted in relief a grapevine, symbolizing the Church. Folded in the grapevine are 40 ancient symbols that represent pre-Christian images from Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. Have you ever had this discussion with a Cardinal or Bishop in Rome before? If so, I’d love to hear their response. I, for one, can’t see how one can defend this type of strange injection into liturgy while, at the same time, attacking culturally-cemented rites like the TLM.
What do they say when faced with this discrepancy?
While the Archbishop makes many decisions that I question (such as this), he has not been hostile to the TLM. Though he doesn’t promote the TLM, he leaves the decisions to parish pastors. My parish in the LA Archdioces hosts one weekly Sunday Mass celebrated by FSSP priests, and makes room for Holy Day celebrations in the extraordinary form.
For sure, +Atticus should look into this type of celebration in his cathedral. Of course, given his location, the performing dancers, representing the indigenous of the Libville locale, would have to be dressed differently. A follow up pastoral letter in the ecology of the area, would make sense as an imparted inspiration of the cathedral celebration.

That is good to know – my first thought was that it was a bit like Gamaliel – in both a good and bad direction, but my second thought was I know of at least one Cardinal Archbishop who is both friendly to the TLM (including celebrating it) and who declared that a pseudo-liturgical theatre piece presented as concert in one of the churches in his cure had desecrated it and nothing like it must be allowed to happen there ever again.
Good that things are no worse, but may your Archbishop come to strive for betterment!
