ANOTHER UPDATE: Feedback from the troops and thanks for the socks!

Remember our Fox River Socks project for the troops in Afghanistan?  I posted the link to a wishlist created by a Catholic chaplain.  As you know, socks are really important for soldiers.  The wishlist was created for some 1800 pairs of socks and YOU, dear readers, helped to bring it to 100% fulfillment.  HERE

Today I had a little feedback which I am happy to share:

Father,

Just got your box of socks and they have been well received. I handed some of them out personally and gave a majority of them to our Chaplain to give during moral calls. All of the Soldiers would like to thank you and your parishioners for taking the time to remember us in your thoughts and prayers. Your actions remind Soldiers that their conflict is remembered and that the nation cares about them. Finally I would like to personally say thank you and hope that you will continue to keep all men and women in uniform in your thoughts and prayers.

Most Sincerely,
Daniel R. Beatty

You are welcome!  I am sure I speak for all the readers who participated that helping out was out pleasure.

UPDATE 7 June:

I had a nice note from Fr. Hesseling, who started the socks project for his troops:

Fr. Z,

100% fulfillment!!!  Holy cow!  I never expected to have such support, I’m so thankful to you and your readers.

Here’s a couple more pictures from happy soldiers who have new socks to be thankful for…

Fr. Jason

He also sent photos!

Having never experienced combat myself I can only imagine how much the experience would suck without adequate foot gear and with cold and wet feet. Keep warm and dry and no, we haven’t forgotten you.

  2. Kathleen10 says:

God bless our beautiful guys!! Your nation loves and appreciates you!

Well, I just blew kisses to these soldiers and all serving.
    I LOVE YOU ALL.
And thank you, Father, for posting this and giving us all a chance to help them.
Best money I’ve spent in ages.
That, and my tithing, and support of you and some certain Catholic alt media. :) :)

We socked it to them, didn’t we?
    *cymbal clash*

*wonders if anyone else here is old enough to get the reference*

This project inevitably brings to mind the letters found at the Roman fort at Vindolanda up near Hadrian’s wall, one of which reads in part:

[I have sent you] . . . pairs of socks from Sattua, two pairs of sandals and two pairs of underpants . . .

and ends with a sentiment as appropriate today as 2000 years ago:

saluta [a me] . . . omnes contubernales cum quibus opto felicissimus vivas

(Greet . . . all your messmates with whom may you live in greatest good fortune).

[Well done. I had planned to use that reference the next time I had to post about some sock drive.]

A BIG thanks to them for their service!

  7. bobk says:

I would like to know why these dear men need someone outside their own government and military supply to provide this? They deserve this and more. Is it because we have to spend millions on vacations for the first family?

  8. AnAmericanMother says:

    It has always been thus.

To wit: Bill Mauldin: Willie and Joe

  9. StephenGolay says:

“Same sex union” is a weasel notion. It comes with the demand that is rite of bonding be approved. In the public mind this simply conflate with the rite to marriage.

The world will think we are being very quaint, and a bit old fashion, in quibbling over same sex unions, while today’s in-thing is multiple partner marriage with all its glorious combinations and permutations. Will the Synod address that?
