UPDATE:
Note that Msgr. Maurice Monier was appointed PRO-Dean. That means that Pinto is not necessarily retired. As a matter of fact it looks like Pinto is staying in place, according to a well-placed friend. So, BOTH Pinto and Monier will be wheeling in that chair at the circular table.
On the other hand, Catholic Hierarchy lists him as Dean Emeritus.

A while back Msgr. Vito Pinto – then-Dean of the Roman Rota – made disparaging remarks about the Four Cardinals of the Five Dubia on Amoris laetitia. At the time I observed that Pinto was 75 (aka retirement age).
Today I observe at L’Osservatore Romano that a new pro-Dean of the Rota has been appointed: Msgr. Maurice Monier of the Diocese of Le Puy-en-Velay.
It is tempting to conclude that the timing of the appointment has something to do with Pinto’s explosive gaffe in his talk. However, I’m pretty sure that that is not what happened. It was time for Pinto to be retired anyway. Pintos exploded after all.

Did Msgr. Pinto retire or was be just reassigned? Also does he retain “Most Reverend Monsignor” in his title, even though a successor is already appointed?
Msgr Pinto was forgetful of the respect he owed a superior. Probably coincidence, but his disrespectful words might have speeded up the new appointment.
That’s interesting. I learnt only recently that the Salve Regina was believed to have been written by a Bishop of Le Puy.
Le Puy is a place of pilgrimage in central France being on one of the routes of the Camino to Santiago with an amazing cathedral sitting atop one of the volcanic peaks in the area. On top of another peak is an enormous statue of Our Lady into which tourists can climb right up to the crown. Inside the cathedral is a famous Black Madonna which when I visited some 55 years ago I had hoped to see. However it was Holy Week and I was disappointed to discover that the statue was completely covered in purple!
Apparently, Pinto’s resignation has not been accepted (the news release only notes the appointment of Monier as “pro-dean” (whatever that means)).
So……where does Msgr. Maurice Monierof fall on the spectrum? Trad or Progressive?
I hope the former and fear the latter.
Mgr Monier was the right arm of Mgr Pinto since his appointment as Dean.
Just before starting to work as Rota auditor, in january 1995, he was Paris Judicial Vicar.
To the best of my knowledge Mgr Robert Michael Sable from the USA is presently the only appointed auditor with a longer period of service than Mgr Monier. He was appointed in June 1994.

Pinto was a 1970’s era cheap car that had an annoying tendency to explode in a fuel tank fire when struck from the rear. My family had one for a bit. Got rid of it. It was “retired”.
Catholic-hierarchy is a great website but is not authoritative. If I was running it I would probably have made the same changes since that is the way things usually work–if there is a new Dean, the prior Dean is out of office. Here, though, we have the novel idea of a “pro-Dean” and there is no statement about Pinto’s resignation being accepted. I have heard the same thing as Fr. Z’s “well-placed friend.”
