In churchy news…

CNA says that Card, Farrell is the president of the Pontifical Commission for Confidential Matters. What the heck is the Pontifical Commission for Confidential Matters? It seems to have something to do with procedures for awarding public contracts of the Holy See and Vatican City State. I guess this is an effort to cut down on graft. But wouldn’t that require a Pontifical Commission for Transparency?

CNA also says that a priest from Lexington, KY, brought bottles of bourbon for Francis to sign so they can be sold for charity. Good stuff, too. 10 year Willet. They are being auctioned by Southeby’s on 7 December.

  1. Magnus Carlsen won the first of two “Freestyle” games against Fabiano Caruana in Singapore. Game two is today.

Meanwhile, the championship will start soon in Singapore. Magnus says, “We could see a bloodbath!” Most big grandmasters predict an victory for Gukesh Dommaraju. Fabiano favors Ding Liren. Hikaru Nakamura feels a Ding win would set chess back two-four years because all the chess momentum is in India right now. I am not sure I understand that. Anyway, Garry Kasparov refuses to treat the event as a world championship match. But he’s against just about everything. I suppose it’s because Magnus isn’t in it. He’s not wrong.

Black to move and mate in 4.

[NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.]

As far as the rainbow vestments maker…if it looks like a duck…

  4. Right after the fire, they started raising funds to rebuild Notre Dame. I thought to myself, “When will I ever get a chance to help build a medieval Gothic cathedral out of love for our Lady.” I gave $25, not an insignificant amount of money for a person working a barely minimum wage job. I have thrilled through the years to see the work progress, despite the unaesthetic and completely out of place modernistic soup bowls they call the altar and the pulpit. But now I see what my $25 contribution went to providing. When will I learn? Must they be the enemy of all that is good, beautiful, lovely, and pure?

How long, O Lord? How long?

  5. EAW says:

This chasuble is ugly, but it still compares favourably to the tie died horrors they inflicted on Benedict XVI in Mariazell.

  6. EAW says:

    Tie dyed, of course.

  7. ArthurH says:

Hard to imagine a less-fitting design and color-choice unless it were a rainbow pentagram.

One can only hope and pray it not be used, though I am almost sure it will be, just as with that terrible Luce icon.

Man, that is one rough looking French toddler.

“What the heck is the Pontifical Commission for Confidential Matters?”

    It’s confidential.

When my two year old son escapes out of the pew and down the hall I feel like he too has 33 raptor engines. A mystery beyond comprehension. How these little legs propel such speed is staggering.

  12. Archlaic says:

Very queerchildish. Not “childlike”; childish… as in immature… stunted… puerile…

There are halloween costumes on Amazon.com that look more like a chasuble than that grade-school-level construction paper craft project in the photo above.
