Rome 24/10 – Day 33: All Souls

UPDATE:

Here’s a clip from a “premium content” video for some Roman Sojourn Donors. It’s nothing special, just part of my morning walk through the area to get some food stuffs for the day and to say hello to a few people as the day gets underway. And a splendid day it was in Rome.

Thank you, Lord, for this day, when the sun rose at 6:42 and when the sun will set at 17:05.

The Ave Maria has a couple more days in the 17:30 cycle.

Today is All Souls. It is not a feast. It is not a day of precept (obligation). However, you can gain indulgences for praying for the dead in this 8 day period.

[NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.]

In the FIDE Circuit scrum to gain a place in the 2026 Candidates Arjun Erigaisi leads followed by Fabiano Caruana. Also, a 9 year old – Ethan Pang – has just hit 2300. I think I will quit chess. He is 4 days faster than Faustino Oro, who did the same when he was 9. Faustino is now an elderly 11.

LOVE mortadella. Have never found any with black truffles, but the kind with peppers can occasionally be found this side of the Atlantic.

I know a number of Catholics who attend Mass regularly on Sundays but they don’t on Holy Days of Obligation. It bothers me!

Also, I read today that the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith declared that because the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception occurs on Sunday this year, Catholics MUST attend Mass on Monday in observance of this holy day! I think that the USCCB has also stated the same. This is a change from the past policy.

I don’t know that you’d realize this but my Zelle donation I make on the 1st every month didn’t go through. I will investigate and resend when I return home (I don’t have my password with me).

I never cared for meat as a child so as an adult I don’t eat it. However, if I could eat in Italy everyday I’m sure I’d change my mind!

It seems one political candidate campaign has all the tricks and methods of cheating at its disposal, a seemingly insurmountable challenge but then I remember it’s not insurmountable for God if that be His will.

  6. TheCavalierHatherly says:

Perhaps this is the case with holy days of obligation, or any obligation, because the modern world views Law as an only-necessary restraint on vice (Locke) rather than as a naturally-derived guide to the habituation of virtue (Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Thomas Aquinas).
