A moment of joy – Your Good News

This may seem trivial in the in face of global plandemics, potential world war and a degenerating Church demographic, but good news is good news and I’ve got some.

I’ve been processing boxes of books, some of which have been in storage for a long time.

Last night I opened a box and… EUREKA!

I found a little treasure, a beautiful little prayer book so elegantly printed and bound in Germany before they lost the Faith. Lovely leather and gilded pages, for the use of priests, all in Latin. Essentially, it put into breast-pocket-size the devotional parts of the Breviarium Romanum (more about those later) and some other helpful prayers for priests.

I thought I had lost it. Actually I thought I had perhaps left it in a car that I traded in to VW when they had the “Diesel Disaster”.

There is was. I was like the woman who swept and found the coin she had lost. So I’m inviting you, my neighbors, to rejoice with me.

So, after a really dreadful day I had that happy moment.

Not on the scale of importance like, say, the rise of one party left-wing domination fueled by full-scale cross-border invasion and massive inflation… but still pretty good.  It made me smile, and I don’t get a whole lot of that right now.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

This on 12 March 2022, the 400th anniversary of the canonization of Sts. Teresa of Avila, Phlip Neri, Isidore, Francis Xavier and Ignatius Loyola.

At the altar of the great Jesuit church in Rome, the Gesù (location of the tomb of Ignatius and arm of Francis Xavier), as the principle celebrant is NOT the ranking cleric there, but rather the head of the Jesuits who seemingly doesn’t believe that the Devil is a personal, angelic agent and who undermined the Faith in a comment that there were no tape recorders at the time of Christ and who doesn’t like doctrine. Standing among the “secondary” celebrants and quite obviously concelebrating, is an old Jesuit, the guy in white.

No alb.  No chasuble.  Not even a stole.

Apart from the fact that Francis is not the main celebrant, I propose that the Jesuits had all those things available at the Gesù and that they could have been fetched a matter of a few minutes.

I am reminded of the old phrase: As lost as a Jesuit in Holy Week.

Jesuits are famously lax in liturgical matters… though there are exceptions and perhaps some of the younger men are more conscientious.

BUT… this is quite simply DREADFUL.   The disregard of liturgical propriety and the of the sensibilities of the faithful is on a global scale here.

But, remember, the Traditional Latin Mass needs to be suppressed.

He brought up this problem in his July 16, 2021 letter to the bishops of the world accompanying Traditionis Custodes, his motu proprio restricting the celebration of the Old Mass: “I am saddened by abuses in the celebration of the liturgy on all sides. In common with Benedict XVI, I deplore the fact that ‘in many places the prescriptions of the new Missal are not observed in celebration, but indeed come to be interpreted as an authorization for or even a requirement of creativity, which leads to almost unbearable distortions.’”

He counseled the bishops: “I ask you to be vigilant in ensuring that every liturgy be celebrated with decorum and fidelity to the liturgical books promulgated after Vatican Council II, without the eccentricities that can easily degenerate into abuses.”

Pope Francis’ own words serve as a rebuke of his decision to concelebrate Mass without liturgical vestments. The sacred character of our acts of worship is fostered and protected when priests and bishops willingly and carefully follow the requirements of liturgical law. The Christian faithful have the right to participate in liturgical prayer without being compelled to experience “unbearable distortions” of good liturgical order. That right depends upon the willingness of priests and bishops to obey what is set down in liturgical law.

There is no clerical privilege that allows priests and bishops to rewrite the rules to suit their own tastes. Yet that is precisely what some priests and bishops will sadly take away from this regrettable instance of papal liturgical abuse.

Okay… so now it’s “humanity” and not Russia and Ukraine – UPDATED: TEXT OF THE CONSECRATION

UPDATE 25 March 2022:

The consecration took place today in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Below, I wondered if the puzzling aspects of the text were intended to separate this act from the requestion of Our Lady of Fatima, to make it “free-standing”, as it were.

Today, the consecration tool place before a statue of Our Lady of Fatima.

Hence, I am more than likely wrong about that, unless they are throwing a real curve.

While I posted in a comment that a friend mentioned to me that he thought that “Land of Heaven” might have a Byzantine connection.. I’ve been putting my old cyrilic skills to work on that, but we really need Easter Catholics to chime in- there is definitely a connection of that title “land of heaven” with the Pachamama demon cult.

Mother Earth has four strata, each represented by a color. Next is “karu mapu”, the green land where our lives take place. Higher up is the “wenu mapu” land of the sky, identified with the sky and where we have the atmosphere with its clouds, its winds. And higher still, the “pullu mapu”, land of souls, identified with yellow by the light of the sun that illuminates and allows us to live.

 

Is that strong enough a connection?  Not sure.

Invito ogni comunità e ogni fedele a unirsi a me venerdì 25 marzo, Solennità dell’Annunciazione, nel compiere un solenne Atto di consacrazione dell’umanità, specialmente della Russia e dell’Ucraina, al Cuore immacolato di Maria, affinché Lei, la Regina della pace, ottenga al mondo la pace.

I invite every community and all the faithful to join me on Friday 25 March, the Solemnity of the Annunciation, in carrying out a solemn Act of consecration of humanity, especially of Russia and Ukraine, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, so that she, the Queen of peace, obtain peace for the world.

Interesting, no?

It is said that, just before John Paul II did a consecration of Russia, he was approached and he changed the formula.

So, who got to Francis?

The cover letter and the text.  Note on page 2 of the Consecration…

“At this hour, a weary and distraught humanity stands with you beneath the cross, needing to entrust itself to you and, through you, to consecrate itself to Christ. The people of Ukraine and Russia, who venerate you with great love, now turn to you,….”

So… “humanity” calls on Mary.

“Therefore, Mother of God and our Mother, to your Immaculate Heart we solemnly entrust and consecrate ourselves, the Church and all humanity, especially Russia and Ukraine.”

So, this is a consecration of “the Church and all humanity”.

That’s … everyone, everywhere.

Thought: Was this done specifically to distance this act from anything having to do with the messages of Our Lady of Fatima?

When the news broke about this, I wrote here, “It depends on what is said.”   Yup.  It does depend.   What I read here is a consecration of “humanity” and the “Church”.   I read a plea for “the people of” Russia and Ukraine but not in any way separated from the way the Church and all humanity are consecrated to Mary’s Immaculate Heart.

Yes, “the people of” Russia and Ukraine get honorable mention.

Think of a graduation ceremony.  All the recipients get their diploma and one might be singled out as valedictorian.  That person is not being granted a degree higher than the others or a double award, High School diploma with Oak Leaf Cluster.

Also, I am turning over in my head the implications of consecrating “the people”, “humanity” and the “Church”.  First, the Church IS the Body of Christ.  Hard to get more consecrated than that.  The Church is made up of baptized living stones.  Some of them are even more consecrated, in a more technical sense of the word: certain religious, virgins, clergy.   Otherwise, things and places are consecrated, in the technical sense: chalices for Mass, bells, buildings such as a church, places such as cemeteries.

A Catholic Dictionary says that “consecration” is:

An ecclesiastical act by which a person or thing is definitely set apart from some religious office, state, or use.  It is superior to and more solemn than a blessing, from which it must be distinguished.

I wonder what “consecration” means in this Act to be read in a few days.

However, there is a non-technical meaning of this polyvalent word. It intends something along the lines of “place under the protection of”… like entrust.

Do you suppose that what the Blessed Virgin wants, wanted, wants… who knows now, given the confusion about consecrations of Russia, yes or no… RUSSIA, the nation, that would have included Ukraine in 1917, not just a rather general entrustment and blessings of the people, but something rather more … what’s the word… “binding”?

More than once the Blessed Virgin told Sr. Lucia about the consecration of Russia.  In 1941 Sr. Lucia reported that in the July apparition in 1917 Mary said:

 I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the communion of reparation on the first Saturday’s. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace. If not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.”

Anyway, read the text.  It’s not bad.  It just seems to be a consecration of humanity and the Church and Russia and Ukraine get honorable mention.

Am I wrong?


Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Basilica of Saint Peter 25 March 2022

0 Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, in this time of trial we turn to you. As our Mother, you love us and know us: no concern of our hearts is hidden from you. Mother of mercy, how often we have experienced your watchful care and your peaceful presence! You never cease to guide us to Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

Yet we have strayed from that path of peace. We have forgotten the lesson learned from the tragedies of the last century, the sacrifice of the millions who fell in two world wars. We have disregarded the commitments we made as a community of nations. We have betrayed peoples’ dreams of peace and the hopes of the young. We grew sick with greed, we thought only of our own nations and their interests, we grew indifferent and caught up in our selfish needs and concerns. We chose to ignore God, to be satisfied with our illusions, to grow arrogant and aggressive, to suppress innocent lives and to stockpile weapons. We stopped being our neighbor’s keepers and stewards of our common home. We have ravaged the garden of the earth with war and by our sins we have broken the heart of our heavenly Father, who desires us to be brothers and sisters. We grew indifferent to everyone and everything except ourselves. Now with shame we cry out: Forgive us, Lord!

Holy Mother, amid the misery of our sinfulness, amid our struggles and weaknesses, amid the mystery of iniquity that is evil and war, you remind us that God never abandons us, but continues to look upon us with love, ever ready to forgive us and raise us up to new life. He has given you to us and made your Immaculate Heart a refuge for the Church and for all humanity. By God’s gracious will, you are ever with us; even in the most troubled moments of our history, you are there to guide us with tender love.

We now turn to you and knock at the door of your heart. We are your beloved children. In every age you make yourself known to us, calling us to conversion. At this dark hour, help us and grant us your comfort. Say to us once more: “Am I not here, I who am your Mother?” You are able to untie the knots of our hearts and of our times. In you we place our trust. We are confident that, especially in moments of trial, you will not be deaf to our supplication and will come to our aid.

That is what you did at Cana in Galilee, when you interceded with Jesus and he worked the first of his signs. To preserve the joy of the wedding feast, you said to him: “They have no wine” (Jn 2:3). Now, 0 Mother, repeat those words and that prayer, for in our own day we have run out of the wine of hope, joy has fled, fraternity has faded. We have forgotten our humanity and squandered the gift of peace. We opened our hearts to violence and destructiveness. How greatly we need your maternal help!

Therefore, 0 Mother, hear our prayer. Star of the Sea, do not let us be shipwrecked in the tempest of war.
Ark of the New Covenant, inspire projects and paths of reconciliation.

Holy Mother of God, as you stood beneath the cross, Jesus, seeing the disciple at your side, said: “Behold your son” (Jn 19:26). In this way he entrusted each of us to you. To the disciple, and to each of us, he said: “Behold, your Mother” (v. 27). Mother Mary, we now desire to welcome you into our lives and our history. At this hour, a weary and distraught humanity stands with you beneath the cross, needing to entrust itself to you and, through you, to consecrate itself to Christ. The people of Ukraine and Russia, who venerate you with great love, now turn to you, even as your heart beats with compassion for them and for all those peoples decimated by war, hunger, injustice, and poverty.

Therefore, Mother of God and our Mother, to your Immaculate Heart we solemnly entrust and consecrate ourselves, the Church and all humanity, especially Russia and Ukraine. Accept this act that we carry out with confidence and love. Grant that war may end and peace spread throughout the world. The “Fiat” that arose from your heart opened the doors of history to the Prince of Peace. We trust that, through your heart, peace will dawn once more. To you we consecrate the future of the whole human family, the needs and expectations of every people, the anxieties and hopes of the world.

Through your intercession, may God’s mercy be poured out on the earth and the gentle rhythm of peace return to mark our days. Our Lady of the “Fiat”, on whom the Holy Spirit descended, restore among us the harmony that comes from God. May you, our “living fountain of hope”, water the dryness of our hearts. In your womb Jesus took flesh; help us to foster the growth of communion. You once trod the streets of our world; lead us now on the paths of peace. Amen.

The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth and YOU

Context: After having been tempted by the Enemy, Our Lord goes into Galilee to preach in the synagogues. Here, He in the town He grew up in after the sojourn in Egypt, Nazareth.

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke [Luke 4:23-30 – RSV]

At that time, Jesus said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself; what we have heard you did at Caper?na-um, do here also in your own country.’” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Eli?jah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine over all the land; 26 and Eli?jah was sent to none of them but only to Zar?ephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Eli?sha; and none of them was cleansed, but only Na?aman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and put him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw him down headlong. 30 But passing through the midst of them he went away.

The 1st reading in the Vetus Ordo is from 2 Kings about the healing of Naaman the Syrian leper. Coincidentally, the readings are the same, 1st and Gospel, today, in both the Vetus Ordo of the Roman Rite and the Novus (which is, on the face of it, not the only expression of the Roman Rite).

How swiftly your own can turn on you when you follow God’s will.

God’s ways are not the ways of the world and it is a risky thing to give yourself over to God. You will be misunderstood and you will be unjustly treated. As we read in John, the Lord says, “They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God” (16:2).

In Luke 4 the Lord is just undertaking His public earthly ministry. He goes, first, to “his own”. They received Him not (John 1:11). In a foreshadowing of what would come, His betrayal by one of His own leading to His Passion and Death, He went mutely, allowing Himself to be brought to the very brink of a cliff and death. But it was not His time and the Devil had already, just before He came to Nazareth, tempted Him to throw Himself down as an echo of Adam’s fall in the sin of “pride of life”. It was not His time, so He simply slipped from their clinging and walked away without saying a word.

Two lessons.

As it would have availed Our Lord nothing to have argued or complained along the way, we could avoid a lot of sins by keeping our mouths shut, even when under duress. Even when painful crosses are offered to us, even by those whom we account friends or loved ones, we must take care how we react.

Unjust or mean treatment hurts more when it comes from loved ones than from strangers. In Nazareth, Christ was being hauled to the cliff by the people He grew up with, who knew Him. How that must have hurt His Sacred Heart, perhaps with a first sharp stab.

I am minded of King Lear who said (unjustly as it turns out) to his own “heart”, his daughter Cordelia, when she won’t flatter him for material gain: “How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have thankless child”.  Lear was wrong about Cordelia, but ironically, what he says falsely about her hurting him is exactly what he does to her. From Cordelia’s perspective: “How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have an unjust parent”.

Hurting is a double-edged tooth that cuts both ways.

As times get harder – and they are going to, in society economically and culturally, in the Church from our leadership – we will need each other more and more.

Let’s make a promise to ourselves to be especially careful with those who are the closest to us, who, in a dreadful twist of our fallen nature, we are the quickest to lash out at because we are confident that they won’t abandon us as would a stranger.

Damian Thompson interviewed Card. Pell on a range of hot topics, including the

Damian Thompson, who happens to be in Rome, has a really interesting interview with Card. Pell.  HERE

Among other things the Cardinal talks about the Traditional Latin Mass and the cruel document Traditionis custodes.   He also talks about Vatican financial corruption, China, and the Synodal (“walking together”) Way.

He makes some interesting comments about the Church in these USA.

Card. Pell’s got game.   If you want some insight into him, read his “prison diaries” being published in volumes by Ignatius Press.

Reshuffling of the Roman Curia: implications for the future of Doctrine and the Traditional Latin Mass

The unnecessarily cruel legacy document of the reign of Francis, Traditionis custodes, seems to be rapidly becoming a dead letter, rather like Ex corde Ecclesiae.

This weekend some version of the new Constitution, Praedicate Evangelium, about the reshuffling of the Roman Curia was released. Among other things, Congregations will now be called Dicasteries… so try to get out of the habit of using the abbreviation CDF.

I guess now we will have the

Dicastery of Truth
Dicastery of Peace
Dicastery of Love
Dicastery of Plenty
Dicastery of Silly Walks…

Seriously, “dicastery” is a perfectly good word and it has been used to describe pretty much any office in the Curia along the lines of all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares… all Congregations are dicasteries but not all dicasteries are Congregations.

“Dicastery” comes from Greek dikasterion which was a “law court”.   It is an interesting choice to move away from language that is collegial, which is implied in a “gathering together”, a “Congregation”, to something that is impersonal and legalistic.

The newly shuffled deck puts something called the Dicastery for Evangelization above Doctrine of the Faith in the pecking order…. but still below the most bureaucratic office of all the now slightly reduced Secretariat of State.

Putting Doctrine below Evangelization…  meh.  I think the idea is to stop thinking about the CDF (DDF!) completely.   There is a chicken and egg aporia here.  To evangelize there has to be “good news”.  But “good news” has content.  That content has to bring people to faith.   For centuries in baptizing the priest would meet people at the threshold of the church and ask “What are you asking of God’s Church?” and they respond, “Faith”.  Going on, “What does Faith hold out to you?”  “Everlasting life”.

Going forward, “faith seeks understanding”.   There is a content to our Faith.  We can make distinctions, like St. Augustine, about that content in terms like this.  There is a Fides quae creditur and a Fides qua creditur.  There is a Faith in which we believe and a Faith by which we believe.    Simplifying for the sake of space and time, there are formulas we can study and memorize and there is the pure gift of grace.   Both of these have their deep content which is not an abstraction, but rather a Person, Christ.  We can have a personal relationship by Faith.

That said, there has to be a logical priority and I am not convinced that signal sent by placing Evangelization first in line is the right signal.

Shifting gears, something came up in the new conference about the new Constitution concerning the description of Culto Divino the liturgy dicastery.

Art. 93

Il Dicastero si occupa della regolamentazione e della disciplina della sacra liturgia per quanto riguarda la forma straordinaria del Rito romano.

The Dicastery handles the regulation and the discipline of the sacred liturgy regarding the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite.

Apparently this – which is now a mistake – was written before the Plessy v. Ferguson legacy document, “Jailers of Tradition”.   Apparently, on paper, there is only one form of the Roman Rite, not two.  This is on the face of it false, of course.   There are in use now two “versions” (is that a better word?) of the Roman Rite.  They aren’t the same.

People have been going after Benedict’s Summorum Pontificum here and there since “Jailers of Tradition” was extruded.  Let’s remember that SP was not intended to solve every issue.  And it was created in an environment slightly more agreeable for Tradition than the life-sucking whirlpool between Scylla and Charybdis was for a barque.  SP went just so far and no farther.  It presented a juridical solution whereby priests could use the Vetus Ordo, or Pian or Gregorian or Tridentine Rite or whatever you want to call it.  SP did not seek to settle questions of liturgical coherence except insofar as Benedict expressed a hope that the two “forms” would influence each other in such a way that the organic development of the Church’s worship would be jumpstarted and the artificial imposition of the Novus Ordo would be dealt with in time.

We shall have to keep an eye out for the future version of “Art. 93” which smacks a little of MiniLove’s Room 101.
