    Serenity … 2… ?

Are Plans for ‘Serenity 2’ in the Works?

The ever-lovable, wonder-writer/director Joss Whedon needs to get a few projects on the go. After running himself ragged with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, he brought the world a small helping of Firefly, a pretty kick-arse movie adaptation Serenity, almost made Wonder Woman, and continued the story of the slayers in comic form. Having handed over the reigns on that, what’s left to do? It’s not like Veronica Mars is still around for him to guest on! Well, he’s still working on his supernatural Goners script after getting a bunch of studio notes, but Whedon never takes it easy, so it’s not a surprise that after reviving his first beloved series, there’s rumors of a Serenity 2.

Oh yes, the Browncoats might come back—not necessarily to the big screen, but to DVD. While the film’s box office didn’t live up to expectations, it has, unsurprisingly, had a heck of a stint on disc. Moviehole recently chatted with Alan Tudyk (Wash), and he said: "They had to put [the new DVD] out because they’ve been selling out of the other one, and so Universal’s like ‘So, let’s do another one.’ And now… there’s now a chance there’s going to be another movie." Well, this is just about the most solid Whedon rumor you can get. While he always has a million potential projects swimming in his head, it’s big news if the studios can see an audience and get interested in the idea.

So, does this make you giggle with schoolgirl-like glee? If so, keep picking up those DVDs and we might just see Serenity fly again! But heck, they could even keep the ship docked the entire time and show a lot of Summer Glau butt-kicking. Who wouldn’t be up for more of that!?

    1. So Fr Z,

Were I to pass thru Minnesota on Halloween – any chance I’d come across a trick-or-treater wearing a black chausable and a Darth Vader helmet with a pom-pom on top?

    2. I never knew you were a fan, Father. Do you have posts from the past where you talk about it?

    3. Matthew: I am not sure if I have talked about either Firefly or Serenity on this blog.  I was introduced to Firefly by a good friend and sometime Sabine visitor.  I was hooked.   It would be nice to see this series live on in some form.  Frankly I think I see some of its influence now in space flight shots in Battlestar Galactica.  At least I’d like to think so.

    4. Matthew: I say, that isn’t a problem … for me and, if it is for you, don’t watch it.

    5. I, too, got hooked on Firefly and Serenity (in reverse order). Very quaint series, excellent movie.

    6. Compared to almost any comparable series/movie, Firefly/Serenity is extraordinarily moral in its ethos
and mature in its handling of relationships. Of the crew, sure, one is a prostitute, but then one is a
celibate Protestant minister, two others are happily married and thinking about children (my hunch is
that Zoe is pregnant at the end of ‘Serenity’), and the two on-board romances are platonic in practice,
even if not in intention. Heck, Captain Reynolds is even too noble to sleep with a woman whom he believes
      to be his wife.

    8. Funny thing is that I just ordered the Firefly complete series DVD yesterday on Amazon for an amazing $19.99. Of course the set is used but it’s better than paying $39.95 new. Next I want to get Serenity but waiting for price to drop.

    9. Hello Fr Z,

Actually I believe some of the FX guys from Firefly are, in fact, now working for Battlestar Galactica. Ron Moore is on record as admiring the FX work of Firefly.

There are conflicting interpretationsout there on this story. “Let’s do another one,” some think, merely means a new special edition DVD of the first movie, not a second movie per se. But hope springs eternal, as it surely does with me.

Actually, my real hope would be to resurrect the series. It would be nice to see Sci-Fi take the money it is sinking into subpar series like Flash Gordon and give it to a new Firefly instead. It’s a vast ‘verse that Whedon created, and best explored through a weekly show, not a mere 2 hour flick.

But I will take what I can get.

      Very interesting! Thanks for that.
