    1. I was REALLY hoping we would get a picture of Benedict with the snake wrapped around his shoulders… that would be one for a caption call!

“OK folks… I have taken ecumenism to a NEW level…”

    2. “they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

      Mark 6:18

Papa Benedetto is now a snake charmer!

    5. in all of this..did you notice how gentle the Holy Father was in interacting
      with the animals?

A man who is cruel or indifferent to the lower beasts will often exhibit the same
characteristics with the highest form of animal, too.

(That he is also a cat lover is a big plus in my book…:))

    7. bryan,

Yes, I was struck by the gentleness and care that he showed too. It was nice.

    8. I noticed, at the very beginning of the clip, that His Holiness was presenting an Order of some kind to somebody. Or perhaps he was the receiver of the Order? Any one with any info on this?

    9. This gave me a fond memory of the photograph of the late Pontiff JP2 holding a koala bear. To me that was one of the iconic photos of a young JP2… right up there with the footage of him in a batting cage on one of his early visits to America.

    10. For those of you who didn’t understand, it also said that the Islamic Institute was opening its doors to take in pilgrims for the event (for the most part Latin Americans).

      Hmmm….

    11. Breaking news: Pope Benedict has had a stroke. In fact, he has had many strokes; he’s been stroking every kind of Aussie critter! Most endearing, and amusing, footage. “Ah, zix months…”

    12. ASimpleSinner,

Did you mean this footage of JP2 at a batting cage?
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ0BbN3m7bU

      Its a hoax with a John Paul 2 look-a-like.

    13. He really loves that koala bear, doesn’t he? (“Vouldn’t ze Vatican gardens look nice vith one of zees?”)

Is the fact that Msgr. Ganswein is wearing a plain black cassock with no sash in any way significant, or am I reading way too much into that?
