New Jersey – 15 Aug: Solemn Mass sponsored by Mater Ecclesiae

I received this note from my good friend Fr. Robert Pasley, pastor of Mater Ecclesiae in Berlin, NJ where I have often been a guest.  Each year Mater Ecclesiae sponsors a Solemn Mass in the Extraordinary Form with exceptional sacred choral music for 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption.

Mater Ecclesiae, in the diocese of Camden New Jersey, has a national reputation.  The community was established by the Diocese of Camden on 13 October 2000, the anniversary of the final apparition of Our Lady at Fatima.  All Masses and Sacraments are celebrated according to the liturgical books of 1962.

Here are the details for this year’s Assumption Mass:

15 August at 1:00 PM
Saint Peter Roman Catholic Church
43 West Maple Avenue
Merchantville, NJ.

The Music for the Mass:

  • Gregorian Propers
  • The Missa brevis septorum sanctorum dolorum B.V.M. by Carl Heinrich Biber
  • Alleluia Assumpta est  and the Dilexisti iustitiam by Heinrich Isaac
  • Offertorium de Sanctissimo Sacramento by Leopold Mozart, the father of A. Mozart
  • Dulcissima Maria – Francesco Guerrero
  • Sonata VII of Heinrich Isaac Biber
  • Ave Maria by Johann Joseph Fux
  • Sonata in D for two trumpets IV  and Sonata in D for two trumpets II by Franceschini
  • O Sanctissima and Hail Holy Queen arranged for Brass and Orchestra by Timothy McDonnell

  1. The music at that site is wondrous. Would that all dioceses had such a choir. Of course, the necessary acoustical conditions such as found in a monastery or cathedral enhances the sublime polyphony.

Then there is the old-fashioned country church in the mountains where one can listen to the happy hymns of local folk who are “pickin’ and grinnin'”.

Two styles: one joy in the Almighty.

Wonderful news. But I don’t live there, I live in the Central Valley of California. Fresno to be exact.

We, too, will be having a Solemn High Mass next Sunday, August 15 at 3:30pm. Fr. Matthew McNeely, FSSP, Sacramento will be here for the feast day. We always pray a rosary in community at 3pm as well. If you live in this area, please do come and join us at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church at Maroa/Bullard in the main part of the church.

Hmm, I may go, it is only about an hour and twenty or so away. Yes, indeed, this might well be the thing to do, with the help of a GPS.

    Hello there Plain Catholic! :D

Fancy meeting you here and not just on the Saints’ Discussion Forums.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, I live fairly close and have been trying to find a time to attend a Mass there. I’ve never attended a Mass in the Extraordinary Form although I’ve been wanting to for some time (there aren’t any parishes with such Masses in my county) and it sounds like it’s going to be beautiful.

Andrew, please come. Also, we’re having Solemn First Vespers of the Assumption at Mater Ecclesiae Chapel on Saturday, 8/14 at 6:15 pm to “kick-off” the festivities.

    John,

Unfortunately I live much closer to Merchantville than I do to Berlin, so coming all the way out there would be difficult. Thanks for the suggestion though, if it wasn’t for the distance I’d definitely go.
