Question for readers: 3D printing

Is there anyone out there who knows about and does 3D printing of rather large objects?

Here’s the issue.

Some time ago, I shot many photos against a green background from many angles of the altar cards used on the daily Mass altars at Ss. Trinità dei Pellegrini in Rome.

I was hoping that, using those photos, some cleverboots in the readership could render a 3D printing file from the 2D images and, therefore, print frames that could be gussied-up and filled with their proper texts.   I understand that such a thing is possible.

A couple shots.

How large, Father? I have a 300mm x 300mm bed printer. Could print in white filament and prime. Then can be painted any color. I have software that in theory can render 3D prints from 2D photos. But as you know, communism works in theory. Would be willing to give it a try.

There are a number of free apps out there that will convert a selection of 2d images into a 3d file that can then be printed…. How many pictures do you have and what format.
Also in the way of 3d models, here is one of my favorite sites for them. It is a museum (in Poland, I believe) that digitizes their collection. I have successfully printed items from here. Lots of Catholic items. Be careful if you search the sketchfab site though, lots of bad stuff too.

Those altar cards were made for/given by Maurizio B*****a, who still goes to Ssma Trinità, so would be able to get, indeed give, you a set. You must known him. Ask any of the priests, I cannot be more precise on this medium.

I have seen a few videos of people printing items and parts and then assembling them.
I would think there are some artistic people out there that could make something like this.

Depending on how many photos you have and how many angles you traverse in the photos, yes, there are any number of free software programs that will stitch together the photos. Some of the software is stand-alone programs and some are online web-based programs where you submit your photos (I would avoid these, as they may collect data).

A step-by-step video guide to the process, called photogrammetry, from Christopher Barnatt, a British computer scientist who posts computer-related video every Sunday on both hardware and software issues, may be found here:

The particular software he uses is called, Meshroom, and is free and open source. Meshroom is based on an older program called AliceVision.

There are a number of other software packages. Here are some lists:

If you have an iPad Pro, you can use its LiDAR function to convert photos into 3d models. Unfortunately, you have to take the photos in real-time. It does not work with pre-existent photos.
