Fr. Z,
I’m one of the students who is involved in organizing this. The Mass will be in the St. Charles Borromeo Chapel in Alumni Hall at ND, at 9AM.
Based on the wording of the statement, I have to guess that the Mass is going to be the regularly scheduled TLM on campus, which is at 9:00 a.m. in the St. Charles Borromeo Chapel of Alumni Hall. It is usually open to students, faculty, staff, and their guests only, as Alumni Hall is a dormitory.
Don’t mix this one up with the 10pm Sunday Alumni hall mass.
I went there (2 weeks ago) and they began the dorm chant of barking incredibly loudly right after Communion and before the Dismas.
Sorry for the confusion. The original source is a local blog out of South Bend. Readers of that infoblog are already familiar with the Mass schedule that is posted there. The original has been corrected to reflect that the sung Mass will be the regularly scheduled Mass at Alumni Hall, at 9:00 am.
Can anyone clarify if this is, in fact, a private mass or if it is available to the public?
Not true regarding who is allowed to attend the Masses in Alumni! These Masses are open to the community. Just enter through the chapel door (with the statue of Our Lady on top) in the middle of the building facing the South Quad.
There seems to be a confusion here stated about “private” Masses and “public” Masses. As I understand, there is no such thing as a “private” Mass in Canon Law, unless this Mass is said totally alone by a priest for either health reasons or other extraordinary reasons. In other words, every Mass by definition is public, and therefore, anyone may attend.
Would a Canon Lawyer care to comment?
The university -who owns the building- desires that only members of the nd community attend. Private property and whatnot. Since this is a dorm the request seems reasonable. I doubt the basilica will be graced with the EF in the lady chapel anytime soon
There is a 745 Latin mass at st patrick
