I know Alaska is very much in the public eye right now, but here is a different angle.
I received a notice by e-mail about photos from Summorum Pontificum Alaska:
With special thanks to Archbishop Roger L. Schwietz, OMI, the Dominican Friars of Holy Family Cathedral and Fr. Armand Nigro, S.J. who offered the Requiem Mass for Anita Kimberley Syren, r.i.p. August 7, 2008.
Fr. Vincent Kelber, O.P., chants the epistle.Dies Irae.Sermon, Fr. Armand Nigro, S.J.Offertory
The occasion may be somber and sad, but it is always elevating to see black vestments.
Brick by… Ice block by ice block
A marvelous development for the patient and deserving people of this Archdiocese.
Does anyone have any information about the EF Mass that has been offered in Fairbanks for many years? It is held in a chapel that looks like a large mobile home. Yet the little I have heard about it is all good.
That’s really nice. Simple church, simple vestments, simple altar set-up, but all very fitting for the worship of God. Sunday best.
Fr.
Thanks for this. As you mordantly observe – ‘ice-block by ice block’.
I’m not being pernickety, really. The MASS is the most important Thing, but can you tell me whether I’m right in thinking that the vestments should be black and gold, not black and purple as it seems these are in the pics. Perhaps that’s part of what you meant by the icy remark.
With assurance of prayers,
Jane
Vestment colors refer to the predominate color. Black and purple is fine. Arguably black and purple is more appropriate than black and gold since gold is more celebratory.
If you go to the website, there is a sidebar to the right with troubling statistics about how few Extraordinary Form Masses have been celebrated there since Summorum Pontificum. It appears that “permission” has not been granted? I thought the priests no longer needed permission?
Blessings on the Faithful there. Very nice Mass, and a nice touch to that hideous auditorium they’re worshiping in.
I think Fr. Z just meant “ice-block by ice-block” as an “Alaska is cold and icy”joke.
Thank you for these photos. I have been concerned about the implementation of the Summorum Pontificum up there, having lived there and having friends who wanted an fssp priest for years! Thanks so much for the encouragement.
Father Z., thank you for posting it. While I read I just can live the spiritual joy in the another side of the Word – Brazil – to see that all over the place our Liturgy is being celebrating with reverence and piety. Thank you Bento XVI!
