    Thanks, Fr. Z, for the selection, presentation, and reading of this particular sonnet! In this disordered age, “the last of life, for which the first was made” is more often regarded with horror than consideration of its consolations. Gandalf gets a pass because he appeared in cartoon and film versions of Tolkien. Quite likely there’s even serious consideration of a Young Gandalf cartoon, in which he studies magic along with some beautiful Middle Earth witches.
