    The imposing Torre delle Milizie (Militia Tower) is a medieval (13th century) structure gracing the Roman skyline above Trajan’s Market. It was apparently severely damaged by an earthquake at some time in the 14th century, resulting in it having lost some of the upper stonework (perhaps an entire floor?) and taking on a decided list. Pope Boniface VIII apparently used it as a defensive fortress (ref.: http://www.sovraintendenzaroma.it/sites/default/files/storage/original/application/b305c3e2a14113ca4f8969bf93918 919.pdf).
