5 August: Our Lady of the Snows

In Rome on 5 August 358, there was a miraculous snow fall to indicate the location of the Basilica to be built in honor of the mother of God. On the anniversary, white rose petals fall from the ceiling of the Basilica during the Gloria.

What a beautiful tradition. An incredible building. The ceiling is magnificent. If my memory serves me correctly, there is a shrine to Our Lady of the Snows in Illinois. I remember going through the list of donors. My grandfathers name was there from Newfoundland Canada. I think the titles of Our Lady are so beautiful. Our Lady of the Snows has an incredible purity about it.

Is this the basilica that Francis has chosen to be buried?

    BeatifyStickler,
The ceiling of Santa Maria M. is covered in some of the first gold that came from the New World.
Yes, there is an Our Lady of the Snows shrine in Illinois, near St. Louis – a very large campus – which I have visited. Thank you to your grandfather for donating to it.
Yes, Santa Maria M. is where H.H. Francis has asked to be buried. Contrary to the usual media nonsense when this was reported, many, many popes are buried outside of St. Peter’s (including Blessed Pius IX and Leo XIII).

Ironically enough, the antithesis of rose petals fell from the sky last night in southern Alberta. A lot of hail damage from another massive hail storm. I got out my trusty reliable Agnus Dei sacramental and prayer to advert storms as soon as the baseball sized hail warning was broadcasted.

Yes, the shrine is in Belleville, IL overlooking the Mississippi River valley and St. Louis, MO. Read about it here:

We had a hail storm yesterday. Our entire yard was white as snow.
