   Something that bothers me about statements being made about those “against” Traditionis Custodes is the consistent idea that “we now have an FSSP Mass” or “we now allow a single diocesan Latin Mass in a diocese” is somehow representative of a solution.

   That’s NOT a solution. That’s NOT acceptable. While it can be a good thing for a bishop to allow a new FSSP parish to be established in his diocese (almost invariably very close to an existing SSPX chapel, sadly), this does nothing for Catholics in the diocese who happen to live hours away from that location. For years, people have worked to build their communities around parishes, including diocesan parishes, where the TLM and Traditional form of the sacraments were offered. The bishops and even the pope are sinning against justice in punishing those Catholics or those parishes (or those Diocesan priests) for simply being faithful Catholics.

   Pretending that this is just a matter of the most meager of imaginable accommodations for those who are “attached” to the TLM is inaccurate and uncharitable. This is a matter of justice, of preserving and protecting the Sacred Liturgical Tradition of the Church, and of fulfilling the OBLIGATION that the bishops and priests (and pope) have to serve the faithful. This absurd “middle-of-the-road” position is akin to people who claim Jesus was not God but just a good teacher. As G.K. Chesterton and many others have put it, Christ was either God or a mad man, He cannot be simply a “good” teacher. Likewise, Traditionis Custodes is either contemptible and should be overturned and utterly opposed in all quarters or it’s correct and the entire liturgical tradition of the Catholic Church should be stomped out of existence. This “I will obey an evil order but try to be slightly nice to the people who suffer from it” path is nonsensical.

   There is a Peanuts cartoon that has Lucy and Linus and Charlie Brown lying on their backs looking at the clouds.
   Lucy asks ,” What do you see in the clouds Linus?”
   Linus responds, ” Those clouds look like the map of British Honduras on the Caribbean. That cloud there looks a little like the profile of Thomas Eakins, the famous painter and sculptor. Those clouds give me the impression of the stoning of Stephen. I can see the Apostle Paul standing to one side.”
   Lucy then asks,”What do you see Charlie Brown?’
   Charlie Brown responds,” I was going to say I saw a ducky and a horsey, but I changed my mind.”

   I often feel like Charlie Brown when reading the comments section of Father Z’s blog.
