San Carlo ai Catinari has been closed up for years, since earthquake that nailed Norcia. It is a grand counter-reformation church held by the Barnbites.
I saw the door … OPEN?!?!?!? (Look at that sky.)

On my way to Gammarelli, by a different route, I spotted something I don’t remember seeing. It commemorates an apparition of Mass at S. M. in Portico.

At Barbiconi (a clerical shop) an ironic juxtaposition.

Serious scissors at Gammarelli.

I went to complain about something. They were super accommodating ! Then we got into a discussion of details. This is the kind of lining, cotton, I will have with the remake of a set I was not pleased with. There were things I specified in the remake that are “archaic”.

It is really important to know, going in, what you want and how to express it. And … TO express it.

What a beautiful church! One doesn’t usually hear about the Barnabites much. I only found out about them a few years back when we decided on the name of one of my sons, Alexander. Looked into the different St. Alexanders out there, and I found out about St. Alexander Sauli, who was a Barnabite and actually the confessor of St. Charles! I’ve grown a devotion to him, and we chose him as our young son’s patron saint.
His feast day was actually just celebrated a few days ago on the 11th. I wonder if there were any images of St. Alexander Sauli inside this church. Relics, maybe? He’s definitely a saint worthy of more people knowing about!
Magnificent church!
yesterday evening i cooked the best thing i have ever made: smoked duck over pecan wood, finished in the skillet to get the skin crisp.
Beautiful sky. It reminds me of a poem:
October’s Bright Blue Weather
by Helen Hunt Jackson
O suns and skies and clouds of June,
And flowers of June together,
Ye cannot rival for one hour
October’s bright blue weather;
When loud the bumblebee makes haste,
Belated, thriftless vagrant,
And goldenrod is dying fast,
And lanes with grapes are fragrant;
When gentians roll their fingers tight
To save them for the morning,
And chestnuts fall from satin burrs
Without a sound of warning;
When on the ground red apples lie
In piles like jewels shining,
And redder still on old stone walls
Are leaves of woodbine twining;
When all the lovely wayside things
Their white-winged seeds are sowing,
And in the fields still green and fair,
Late aftermaths are growing;
When springs run low, and on the brooks,
In idle golden freighting,
Bright leaves sink noiseless in the hush
Of woods, for winter waiting;
When comrades seek sweet country haunts,
By twos and twos together,
And count like misers, hour by hour,
October’s bright blue weather.
O sun and skies and flowers of June,
Count all your boasts together,
Love loveth best of all the year
October’s bright blue weather.
Why “ironic juxtaposition”? Both belong to Catholic orders.
Marcus: Because a couple days ago the Holy See clarified which equestrian orders were recognized. In that photo is the garb of the Constantinian Order, which the Holy See doesn’t recognize next to the Knight of Malta, which is.
Thanks. I always found this position of the Holy See unfair towards the Constantinian Order – its stucture and leadership was structured by a Pontifical Bull in 1718; at the beginning of the 20th century the Order was officially given a church in Naples (the act was published in Acta Ap. Sedis), and the last Cardinal Protector, appointed by the Holy Father, died in 1920s. It was never legally ablished, but since the mid-20th century, the Holy See just acts as if it didn’t exist.
Still, some respectable Cardinals, like Castillon Hoyos and Muller were appointed as Grand Priors of the Order; Card. Mamberti is Prior for Italy, and Card. Harvey has hosted the pilgrimages of the Order is St Paul’s Basilica several times.
This is quite different from various “Templar” and other groups that somehow find their way into a church to have a Mass or “investiture”.
