The Traditional Latin Mass will return to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mandarin, Florida on Trinity Sunday, June 7th, after an absence of more than 40 years. Our pastor, Father Dan Cody has arranged for the Extraordinary Form to be offered as a result of a petition signed by 76 parishioners. The mass will be celebrated in our Historic Church on the first and third Sundays of each month at 11 a.m. by Father Darius Sleszynski, Chaplain of St. Vincent’s Hospital. This will be the only site for the celebration of the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the diocese of St. Augustine – apart from the former indult mass at Immaculate Conception in Jacksonville.
Some good friends are visiting,
A friend just graduated from TAC,
I’m wrapping up the schoolyear,
Got some new books fromthe library yesterday,
and we are leaving for the Chartres pilgrimage in a few days!
The Brothers of the Little Oratory in San DIego will have Musical Oratory – the unique Oratorian combination of a prayer service and concert spirituel from which originated the form of oratorio – in St. Joseph’s Cathedral. 1535 Third Ave., at 3:00pm on Sunday 24th May. Philipine hymns will be sung, as well as the Litany of Loreto, there will be a fervorino wil be given by Fr. Carl Gismondi, FSSP, and a musical offering of French music for Grand Organ played by Dr. Alison Luedecke. There is no charge.
On Monday 25th at 7:00pm, the Brothers will sing 1st Vespers of St. Philip Neri (1962 Breviary) in Sacred Heart Church, Coronado, Ca. Fr. Carl Gismondi FSSP will be Hebdomadary. Music will include the hymn “Pangamus Nerio” by William Sewell, arranged for Organ, Strings and SATB choir, the Magnificat Tuono Primo by Hernando Franco (1575 – Mexico City), Croce’s “O Sacrum Convivium” and Soriano’s “Regina Caeli.” There will be cake and refreshments afterwards.
Finally on Tuesday evening 26 May at 7:00pm Fr. Gismondi will celebrate St. Philip’s Day mass in the Extraordinary Form in St. Anne’s Church, Sicard Street. Music will include the Hassler Missa “Dixit Maria” and Verdonck’s “Ave Maria”.
All are welcome. Brothers have come from Cincinnatti, Los Angeles and Kansas to be together with those who reside in San Diego for these special services, and to a man they express their unreserved gratitude to the clergy and pastors of San Diego for their generosity in allowing them to take place to the greater glory of God, and “our” saint. Again Reverend Fathers, our thanks. Please join us!
This is something random that I saw at Mass yesterday and it actually made me think “I hope Fr. Z makes one of those ‘good news’ posts soon.”
While I was kneeling after communion at Mass yesterday, I saw two little girls go up one after the other – the first a little older than the second – both of them had their hands folded properly the whole time, they both genuflected before receiving and then also received communion on the tongue. The second could only have just gotten her First Communion in the past year or two; blond, braided pigtails and all.
I offered up a little prayer of thanks after witnessing that. A rare, and definitely welcome, sight in my parish, to be sure. There’s a parent out there who knows what they’re doing.
Well, the weather in the New York Metro area and the lower Hudson Valley was close-to-San-Diego-like. The kind of weather we imagine God has in heaven. I’m sure it’s better in the Heavenly Jerusalem, but this is its nearest equivalent on earth.
Good and bad news. In a few days I will celebrate seventeen years of marriage to the most wonderful man in the world. We have been greatly blessed over the years with a large number of children, stable employment and good health. Sadly, we learned this week that we have lost another baby in utero. It’s a bit of a blow, since this is two in a row, so prayers would be much appreciated.
As I’ve mentioned in other comments, I made my first profession as a Lay Dominican last Sunday (check out my name now)! :D The fact that it happened on the same day as Debacle Day at Notre Dame has only strengthened my will to be a really good Dominican and do all I can to serve the Church and try to bring the world to its senses.
In simpler pleasures, I was actually able to keep my AC turned off for a couple of days this week! The nights have been so cool and beautiful! I just love sleeping in fresh night air, and waking up to bird songs! :D
Tomorrow is the last day of school and the students as well as those of us who teach them are excited about summer vacation. Plus, one of my co-workers is pregnant! And, my baby was quiet long enough for me to do some yard work.
Today, I conquered the demon of anger and the temptation to do harm to another person. Uniting myself to the Sacrifice of Holy Mass helped to calm me down. So did frequent prayer. Thanks Be to God.
I’m at the Extraordinary Form workshop with the Canons of St. John. It is an awesome week and I am convinced that I shall celebrate the EF very shortly!!! :-)
I actually have three bits of good news.
-I am going to attend both the Chant Intensive and the Musica Sacra Colloquium this year for the first time.
-We will be having 40 hours devotion and a Corpus Christi procession at our parish this year.
-I am going to get to meet Archbishop Burke in August.
Deo gratias! :-)
Slowly but surely, more readers of my blog! Answering the call of the Holy Father for more internet evangelist…thanks to the inspiration of my great Jedi Mazter, Fr. Z! Huzzah!
Yesterday, my DVD (“Veilleurs dans la Nuit”)from Sainte Madeleine du Barroux monastery arrived. Hooray! I watched it and it was wonderful. It was so encouraging to see the reverence of these monks and the large (and, apparently, growing) number of young monks this very traditional monastery is attracting.
(1) Got to serve Low Mass (Annunciation Thursday on Thursday, WHAT WHAT) for my dearest friend this morning, whose ordination fell on this date four years ago;
(2) My five-year wedding anniversary is today;
(3) My grandfather’s 80th birthday is today;
(4) My wife is 13 weeks pregnant with our long-awaited first child (will he be a Jude Thaddeus or a Valentine Marie?).
Had a great day of masses. This morning I watched a magnificent mass on TV from Westminster Cathedral. And tonight I attended a great solemn high mass for the feast of the Ascension, with beautiful polyphony, at St. Bernadette’s in Silver Spring, MD.
Saturday I have my first formation session for our WYD group, then after I’m singing at a confirmation mass at the parish next to mine. Next Saturday I fly out at 6:30am to visit the minor Seminary of Saint Philip Neri in Toronto Ontario, where I may be attending next fall!
Ray, A homeless friend of mine, a Catholic, a Marine combat veteran of Viet Nam is spending the week in a cheap motel sloughing off an alcohol addiction. This is great news, because this will qualify him to enter a shelter here in Portland, receive food and access to many rehabilitative programs…after a year on the street.
This is hopefully the beginning of the end of a knockdown dragout battle against despair, the elements, abuse by the public (coins and urine hurled at him), anxiety attacks, tense relations with other street people, joblessness and etc.
Please remember him. He lost his son in an accident about a year ago and temporarily lost his equilibirium, but he is on the mend, thanks be to God! Once again he wants to live.
Lets see…I got a raise last month and a retro check this week. I wrote a letter to the editor of my local paper with the ammo supplied here about Obama/ND. It’s good to still have free speech, though I’m certain I’m on many of their lists by now. I was able to work some overtime AND get to Mass today. My wife and I and 4 beautiful daughters are all healthy and we’re still able to home educate. School’s out for summer danadant danadant.
Our home is a bird sanctuary also. Here in Texas we enjoy Peafowl, chickens, purple martins, mocking birds, an occasional oriole, and others. I have a computer that works and an ole truck that still gets me to work. Last week we celebrated 20 years of happy mostly Holy Matrimony. You know I didn’t know how blessed I was until Fr. offered this opportunity to express. Thank you Jesus Mary and Joseph!
After much prayer and hard work I finally got a new job making twice as much as I am now and I will be able to get out of debt in 6 months! Praise God!
Just returned from taking my family to a Solemn High Mass in the Mass in the Extraordinary Latin Form at St. Bernadette’s Church in Silver Spring, MD. This was a first for this church and there were many priests in celbrating including a few who were there to learn the Traditional Latin Mass.
My children amaze me every day.
I’ve heard blackpoll warblers in my yard each day this week.
Tomorrow is St Rita’s Feast Day. We live within walking distance of her
national shrine. I will get to see some of my retired Augustinian priest
friends as well as the hundreds of pilgrims who will pack all 6 Masses.
Confessions are heard before every Mass. All in all, a beautiful day.
My 18 year old daughter, who is our youngest and a wonderfully joyful person, is seriously pursuing a vocation to the contemplative life. She says she has been hearing the call for several or more years now, and she most loves to spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
This is even more amazing because my husband and I were married in the Catholic Church but had agreed to raise our children in my husband’s (non-Catholic)denomination (with the priest’s full knowledge and agreement — long story — no apologetics to answer my then fiancee’s questions and challenges about Catholicism — this was 1983 –the priest was even the head of the Archdiocese’s Family Life office!). The children attended church with their dad basically every week and were confirmed in his denomination. Now, 25 years later and after significant private sorrow and prayer and homeschooling all their school years, my oldest has joined the Catholic Church upon turning 18 several years ago, the youngest turned 18 in March and will join the Church June 27, and the middle child has shown interest in becoming Catholic as has her boyfriend who has never been baptized but is now reading catechetical material.
God moves in decidedly mysterious and merciful ways. Please pray for my daughter’s vocation and for our family. This has been tough on my husband who is a solid Christian but at this point is still decidedly not Catholic. Yet, God has been doing the impossible through prayer.
Fr. Scott Daniels, OP and I celebrated four years of priesthood yesterday! Of all the decisions I have made in my 45 years, the decision to become a Dominican priest has been the best. No regrets. And no turning back. It’s a fantastic adventure, and I highly recommend it!
Ascension forty days after Easter is alive and well in Seattle at St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic church! Daily mass at my own parish was canceled for some reason so I fought rush hour traffic across Lake Washington to get to Divine Liturgy at St. John’s this evening.
Father, you want awe inspiring, stop them in their tracks, stunning, “we are Catholic and we know it,” “we are here to worship God,” encounter with mystery, liturgy: they never lost it in the “other lung of the church!” Good news, indeed.
Ascensionday was a real day full of blessings for me!
1) I had a very deep, moving meeting with Our Most Holy Lord in the sacrament of Reconcilliation.
2) After that, I had the privilege of a TLM Mass. The first Ascensionday H. Mass acoording to the EF I ever participated in. It was…..good!
3) During communion, God showed a glimpse of what He has in store for me. Not a lot, but it shed a welcome light on some things I am going through.
4) Next week I will participate in a 3day pilgrimage from Paris to Chartres. I’ll be walking 100 km in three days. Three days of penance, which I will use to pray for holy priests who will serve Holy Masses. Id est: by the book! I see a lot of people searching for holiness. For guidance. I want to pray for help! We NEED to pray for holy priests that will be able to serve their flock!
The opportunity to offer up my sparetime, my pain and my struggle so that other people too may find the joy I’ve found in the Lord and the help I’ve found in holy men and women who guide me on my journey to my Father’s house, fills me with unspeakeble gratitude.
And that’s good news!
This past week I celebrated my 8th anniversary of Ordination to the priesthood. My parish is growing in love for the Lord in the Eucharist. Adoration has been extended to once a week rather than once a month. Our young people are being instructed and formed in the Faith more strongly. I have several boys and young men in the parish who are interested in the priesthood, and one girl who is discerning a call to religious life in one of the new and vibrant religious communities. Moving the tabernacle to the center of the sanctuary has increased reverence for the Sacrament. Many more people are being reconciled to God through the Sacrament of Penance. I am trying to draw the non-practicing Catholics back to the practice of their faith. The Holy Spirit is alive and well, despite the bureaucrats in the diocese who seem to be doing all they can to preserve their jobs and continue the same failed projects and policies of the past 30 years.
On Monday I am flying to Caracas, Venezuela, with 11 other women for a five day Theological Workshop in an Opus Dei Conference Center – Altoclaro.
It is the second visit there for me – once a year there is a workshop in English, if there are enough people who will travel there from Trinidad. This year there will also be one from St. Lucia traveling with us.
The center is in the hills outside Caracas. It is peaceful and lovely, and provides a wonderful setting for study and relaxation.
I have had my first set of lessons to be received into the church by a wonderfully orthodox, intelligent priest at my EF parish. I am so happy – it is like walking on a cloud!
Attended a Solemn High Mass for Ascension Thursday at my FSSP parish.
A teacher at the large suburban (Novus Ordo) Catholic school where I work borrowed my copy of the FSSP mass training video and showed it to the 7th grade class! None of them had ever seen Holy Mass in the Extraordinary Form.
(1) Our parish has gone ad orientem
(2) The choir blows away any other singing group in the region…and they draw from the entirety of the Christian musical tradition…except nothing after 1968
(3) I’m graduating fellowship!
1 One of my brothers has just got a new job, in the public sector and is getting married in July.
2 It’s half term and my recently dislocated shoulder got discharged from the hospital today.
3 I’m off to Lourdes on the Blackfen Parish Pilgrimage on Monday.
My beautiful and loving wife and I are celebrating our 28th wedding anniversary today. We were able to celebrate it today by going to noon Holy Mass and receiving a special blessing afterward from our pastor, Fr. Ben.
It is finally sunny and warm here; I will be doing two hours of Adoration tonight; I have wonderful friends; and reading everyone else’s good news has been the highlight of my day so far. Thanks for these posts, Fr. Z!
And AJD – your comment made me happiest. You are in my prayers.
I pray that Adoration is fruitful for you this evening. I go to adoration every morning, and it has helped me incredibly in allowing the Lord to lead and strengthen me throughout the day. I credit fierce, unrelenting prayer and Our Lady’s kind and gentle hand with my successful few months of chastity.
The joy at the foot of the Cross is truly magnificent. Agonizing, magnificent joy.
A priest that will be ordained in June has asked for his first public Mass to be a Solemn High Mass. I get to sing at this Mass. What an honor to get the blessing of a new priest.
Thank you, Cyndy. I assure you that I have been abundantly blessed already! I am a broken sinner, wholly unworthy of all of the graces that I have already received.
Let us offer Him prayers of praise and thanksgiving. God is so good!
My 20yr old son has been accepted at a Catholic college that was named in the Newman Guide, as his first step toward priesthood, a call he has felt since 12yrs old. He is strongly considering the FSSP as his eventual goal. Financial means have also come through at the last minute to help make this possible.
Thank you Lord!
Please pray for him as he discerns God’s will for his life.
Found out a bit more good news – over the past three weeks, about 375 children have received their First Communion at my parish! (Of course, with 12,000 parishioners, that number is hardly surprising.)
At St. Ann’s parish in Charlotte, NC, Fr. Timothy Reid offered the Missa Cantata on the feast of the Ascension of the Lord. A great group of chanters served as the schola. There were two seminarians in choir, six torch bearers, two acolytes, a thurifer, a boat bearer, a crucifer, and an MC. Fr. Reid was quoted as saying afterwards, something to the effect of “That was as much fun as my first Mass!” A young man named David Liberto, whose wife gave birth to their first child earlier this year, served as MC. He taught himself the MEF and has been training three of my sons and about 15 other boys to serve. He’s awesome! God bless you, Father Z!
I went to Confession today, was privileged to receive the Holy Eucharist afterwards and now am off to hear a Solemn Latin Mass (O.F.) with music sung by Cantores in Ecclesia, a tremendous choir here in the Pacific Northwest of international repute.
I just moved outside of Chicago. There is a \”food store\” in my new town that just opened up called, Fresh Foods. This store is like no other food store that I have ever been to. It is a combination open market, supermarket and ethnic and gourmet shop. First off, it is like the UN there because the customers are from every country and like an open market they shop agressively, examining the veggies, discussing the veggies/fruit etc with their numerous family members who are also there. The prices and quality of the fresh veggies are tremendous and half of the stuff is a mystery to me because it is stuff used in Italian, Indian, Japanese etc cooking. I saw some very strang looking vegtable that all of the Indian women were loading up on and I wanted to ask them what the heck it was… The deli has some of the normal fare, but it also has octopus salad, umteen varities of prosciutto and cheese from Italy and other meats from poland,Russia… lots of fresh & smoked fish etc. And the deli & butcher staff are like characters from the past–they joke with you. Fresh breads from every different country… I also wandered the isles and saw gunpowder tea from the Peoples Republic, Turkish candy, German and Russion pastries. The best part is that very much of this stuff is either reasonably priced or even better. Anyway, Fresh Foods made me very happy; it is a good thing-to quote Martha Stewart. FYI, anyone who enjoys food or who likes to cook will understand this post.
I finally got an interview date at the American Consulate in Montreal so that I can get my fiancée visa and get married to my wonderful Samuel on June 27, 2009 in the TLM at Holy Rosary parish in Indianapolis. It was the last piece of the wedding puzzle and we’ve been waiting for months for this appointment!!!! We’re Getting MARRIED!!!!!
You wrote, “I am a broken sinner, wholly unworthy of all of the graces that I have already received.”
Do not be too hard on yourself. Please be assured that we are all broken sinners … and that we all stand together as such, ready to receive the limitless love and mercy of God.
Other bits of good news: despite the criticism so often slung at the Church, the installation of Archbishop Vincent Nichols to the see of Westminster was broadcast live on BBC TV. This certainly used to be done for Anglican Archbishops of Canterbury, but never before for the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster. The liturgy was wonderful and the choir fantastic.
A. N. Wilson is a very intelligent and good writer. He was once an Anglican seminarian but left and became a journalist and writer. He has written intelligently on religious and cultural/historical matters. He has always been a devotee of Cardinal Newman. Anyhow, at some point along the way he lost his faith and stopped praying to Jesus “as if he were God”. He even did a TV programme and wrote a book about Jesus in which, though his admiration for the Lord, the first disciples, and genuine believers today, remained respectful, one could tell he felt it was all just an inspiring fable.
God bless him! A. N. Wilson has recovered his faith and has written an interesting article about it which appeared in the Daily Mail.
Happy reading and let’s pray for all who seek the Lord, whatever the twists and turn of their journey.

“This blog is like a fusion of the Baroque ‘salon’ with its well-tuned harpsichord around which polite society gathered for entertainment and edification and, on the other hand, a Wild West “saloon” with its out-of-tune piano and swinging doors, where everyone has a gun and something to say. Nevertheless, we try to point our discussions back to what it is to be Catholic in this increasingly difficult age, to love God, and how to get to heaven.” – Fr. Z

Everyone, work to get this into your parish bulletins and diocesan papers.
The most evident mark of God’s anger and the most terrible castigation He can inflict upon the world are manifested when He permits His people to fall into the hands of clerics who are priests more in name than in deed, priests who practice the cruelty of ravening wolves rather than the charity and affection of devoted shepherds.

“Until the Lord be pleased to settle, through the instrumentality of the princes of the Church and the lawful ministers of His justice, the trouble aroused by the pride of a few and the ignorance of some others, let us with the help of God endeavor with calm and humble patience to render love for hatred, to avoid disputes with the silly, to keep to the truth and not fight with the weapons of falsehood, and to beg of God at all times that in all our thoughts and desires, in all our words and actions, He may hold the first place who calls Himself the origin of all things.”

Don’t rely on popes, bishops and priests.
“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”
“The modern habit of doing ceremonial things unceremoniously is no proof of humility; rather it proves the offender's inability to forget himself in the rite, and his readiness to spoil for every one else the proper pleasure of ritual.”

As for Latin…
"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.
I received Holy Communion today – can’t get much better than that!!
Our youngest was promoted on Monday. My youngest grand child is 6 month old. Prayers for this little one to develop a better appetite…not eating well.
The Traditional Latin Mass will return to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mandarin, Florida on Trinity Sunday, June 7th, after an absence of more than 40 years. We attended Mass on Ascension Thursday on the actaual day for the first time in years! Praise God!!!

(1) Got to serve Low Mass (Annunciation Thursday on Thursday, WHAT WHAT) for my dearest friend this morning, whose ordination fell on this date four years ago;
(2) My five-year wedding anniversary is today;
(3) My grandfather’s 80th birthday is today;
(4) My wife is 13 weeks pregnant with our long-awaited first child (will he be a Jude Thaddeus or a Valentine Marie?).
A Te Deum is in order . . . Pray for my family!
Today, I turned 18, Sunday I graduate High School, and hopefully in a year, I leave for seminary.
I am going down to spend my day tomorrow at the seminary, and it is starting out with Mass with Archbishop Dolan, and then meeting him afterwards.
Praise God!
My wife says labor should start any day now.
Forgot to add that my 4 year old knows that Pope Benedict is also the Vicar of Christ. He’s been practicing so he can tell Father at Mass Sunday.
My wife an I celebrated 21 years of Catholic Marriage today. We are blessed with a lovely daughter. Thanks be to God.
My wife and I just found out we’re having a baby! Number *six* :)
My second son has joined his brother in the Order of the Arrow (Boy Scouting\’s honor and service society)!
My second son has joined his brother in the Order of the Arrow (Boy Scouting\\\’s honor and service society)!
Fr. Scott Daniels, OP and I celebrated four years of priesthood yesterday! Of all the decisions I have made in my 45 years, the decision to become a Dominican priest has been the best. No regrets. And no turning back. It’s a fantastic adventure, and I highly recommend it!
Fr. Philip, OP
Sanctuary renovation somewhere down south:

There is muchto be joyful about! God be praised!
We will return on Sunday May 31st.
My pastor said he will recommend me for a lay ministry education program at the seminary. I’ll start next fall.
My youngest daughter turns 5 years old today!
Congratulations on your ordination, Fr. Andrew!
Ben.
I have left the homosexual lifestyle to live chastely within the Catholic Church, and the Lord has blessed me greatly. Praise God!
I’ve been accepted for seminary formation, starting in September.
Thank you, Lina.
I watched Mass in the Lourdes Grotto in French this afternoon.
Wonderful news, AJD!! May God bless you abundantly! I will keep you in my prayers.
Vincent Nichols is now Archbishop of Westminster. Woo Hoo!
It has stopped raining for a while and I have got some washing dry at last!
Dear AJD,
God bless you!

Just spending some time on Memorial Day catching up on the blog due to my good news…
My wife gave birth to a son named Dominic Xavier on the afternoon of May 21, Ascension Thursday. God willing he will be a priest some day.
