Tosatti in La Stampa on Vatican appointments

In the daily La Stampa, Marco Tosatti has an article concerning possible upcoming Vatican appointments.

After speculation about the appointment of Card. Tauran for Interreligious Dialogue, Tosatti riffs on the presence of men from Milan in the Curia.

Tosatti mentions Antonio Card. Canizares, Archbp. of Toledo, as a replacement for H.E. Card. Levada, who is rumored to be going to New York.  Also mentioned as possibilities are Archbp. Angelo Amato, SDB, the present Secretary of the CDF and also Angelo Card. Scola, Patriarch of Venice.    Another name mentioned is one of my favorites, H.E. Marc Card. Ouellet, Archbp of Quebec City.

It is possible that Archbp. Claudio Maria Celli, Secretary of the all-powerful APSA could go to Social Communications to replace Archbp. Foley, who would replace Carlo Card. Furno as the Master of the Equestian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.

Father, you mention in your post a lot of names. Could you provide us with some context from your place on the ground over there on who these men are? Or email me if you want. Thanks!

  2. TO says:

Cardinal Ouellet is one of your favourites? This Canuck appreciates that ;)

  3. Dan says:

his is the part that I don’t understand and maybe someone could help me out with this one. Why would you move Levada as head of the CDF to New York? He would only have been head of the CDF for a little more than 2 years? Personally I think that Archbishop Burke from St. Louis might come to NY.

  4. thetimman says:

    Dan, perish the thought.

  5. Henry Edwards says:

I recall a columnist (not Father Z) suggesting a time back that no bishop be promoted without the scalp of a clerical abuser hanging from his belt. (I myself might have substituted the phrase “liturgical abuser” in this condition.)

But now I wonder what might be the pros and cons of a condition that no bishop be promoted who has not recently celebrated a TLM. Would there be a sudden outbreak of pontifical Latin Masses all over? Would this be a good way to ensure the success of the coming motu proprio?

  6. Royce says:

Burke certainly fits all of the requirements above, but I doubt he will be moved
    just yet.

Could someone explain to me what Levada has done to be so far in the Pope’s favor?
Or is it that he was in, and now out? I just don’t quite get it.

  7. If I remember correctly, Levada worked in the CDF under Ratzinger, so I’m sure the pope knows him well.
It does seem odd that he would only be in the post as head of the CDF for such a short time. That is what suprised me.

  8. Janet says:

Fr. Z, this is much lower on the totem pole than archbishops and cardinals, but the replacement for retired Bp. Foley in the Birmingham Alabama diocese will have important ramifications for EWTN and Mother Angelica’s Shrine in Hanceville, AL. I’ve heard that the replacement has been named, but wasn’t told who he is.
Is there anything you can reveal concerning our new bishop’s identity, and whether he will be more amenable to the Latin Mass and to Ad Orientum Novus Ordo masses?

  9. mariadevotee says:

I am not anywhere in the know about these things, but I cannot imagine that the change from the head of the CDF to New York is moving up the food chain. Perhaps the Holy Father wants someone stronger and tougher in that spot (CDF).

  10. Royce says:

    Mariadevotee,

My thoughts exactly. The patriarch of Venice looks like a really strong candidate
    to me, given the situation.

  11. Michael says:

I just saw His Eminence, Marc Cardinal Ouellet this morning at the installation Mass of the Most Reverend Terrence Prendergast, S.J. to the Archdiocese of Ottawa. The Mass had the Pater Noster, the final blessing, and some hymns in Latin. The Angus Dei was a mix between French and English with the responses in Latin. The program for the Mass included a explination in the back …
“In order to express more clearly the unity and universality of the Church… the better-known prayers of the Church’s tradition should be recited in Latin and, if possible, selections of Gregorian chant should be sung”-Pope Benedict XVI, Sacramentum Caritatis, #62

  12. Bruce says:

SF stole our Giants, but Cardinal Levada is not appropriate compensation. Let him stay in Rome!
When Cardinal Egan’s resignation is accepted, (I would imagine after the bicentennial celebration on April 8) we would be happy to welcome Burke, Chaput, or maybe even Serratelli.

  13. RBrown says:

I wonder whether the new Sostituto will mean more changes in the Curia. Sandri was Sodano’s man and, I was told, was good at dragging his feet about what BXVI wanted.

And that is exactly what was announced today in the bollettino: http://212.77.1.245/news_services/bulletin/news/20491.php?index=20491&lang=ge

one of my fellow bloggers has strong opinions on Scola. I agree with the sense of them, I must say.

There was a great young priest from Toledo in St A’s and Edinburgh a couple of years ago,FWIW.
