Interesting that Card. Pacelli (Pius XII) said that about the liturgy when some of the changes he permitted during his pontificate were quite the rupture with tradition. I read about in “Lumen Christi: Defending the Use of the Pre-1955 Roman Rite” after you, Fr. Z, recommended that very book on this blog. Quite the eye opener. Pius XII was quite the traditionalist in everything except liturgy. When he came to liturgy, he was rather liberal, sadly.
In light of the words of the great Pacelli, I would like to present the lines of a somewhat modified Virgil:
Pias, reliquias modern(or)um atque immitis Bugnini,
Arcebat longe Latina, multosque per annos
Errabant acti fatis maria omnia circum

The fellow who teaches chant school at my parish – most attendees are from the archdiocese’s FSSP parish – and who usually arranges music for the Thursday vespers (they’re back to back) was in charge of music for last week’s FSSP ordinations. So blessed to have him as a teacher!
Pius XII was a disaster. Divino Afflante Spiritu practically destroyed Catholic biblical studies, which intimately affects liturgy. His revision of the Psalter was also scandalous, first time in the history of the Roman rite that Psalms were based on Hebrew rather than the Septuagint. The sooner we grasp that the problems of Vatican 2 had their seeds deep set in the pre-Concilliar Church the sooner we can actually start to fix things.
