8 June: inauguration for TLM parish in Rome
WDTPRS has learned that the inaugural Mass for the brand spankin’ new personal parish for use of the pre-conciliar books for Mass and all sacraments, yes parish, at Ss. Trinità dei Pellegrini, will be a Solemn Mass at 10 a.m. on Sunday 8 June.
H.E. Most Rev. Ernesto Mandara, auxiliary bishop for the Centro Storico of Rome, will be in choir.
I urge all Roman readers to attend, clerics and seminarians in proper choir dress.
Would that I could make it!
And, no, there will not be concelebration.
(I couldn’t resist.)
Won’t be able to make it on the 8th, but I will be in Rome the next week. Does anyone know what time the daily Mass(es) will be said?

And it is a very beautiful church (I was lucky enough to attend it this Easter); then again, almost every Roman church is beautiful. An embarassment of riches!

Comment by Piers-the-Ploughman — 8 May 2008 @ 5:36 pmPiers, my Gregorian chant professor, who was an 84 or so year old monk, occasionally went on spiels about today’s liturgical practices, and one of them was concelebration. It seems it’s one of those things (like altar girls and communion in the hand) which began as an abuse and was then given permission for, which is usually a bad sign.

But for concelebration? Are trads against it just because it started in the 20th century?
Because when an entire community of 20 priests concelebrates one Mass, they aren’t sying 20 private Masses. It’s also not good for the priest to be so distant from the elements, the gestures, signs and symbols. The only place for concelebration in the old rite is at the ordination Mass. although all the Tridentine Bendictine communities do it on special feasts.

Do you dislike concelebration? I’ve always wondered what priests have thought of concelebration. I must say it appears strange everytime I attend a concelebrated Mass.

Mitch, when I was at this lovely church Fr. Kramer had other priests from overseas and about Rome to assist him. I am sure he will do the same this time.
One of my most favorite saints once occupied this Church, St. Philip Neri, who set up a hospice for the suffering pilgrims as is depicted on the walls.
Paul, how could any money spent to adorn the Lord ever be an embarrassment of riches ? all the riches of this earth belong to the Lord anyway…remember what Jesus said to the apostles when they rebuked the woman for ‘wasting’ the precious oils to adore him…
BTW, Ss. Trinità dei Pellegrini is in need of much restoration and cleaning up. It will take a lot of money and man-power. I just wish I was back over there every day, I could clean the light bulbs and repair the linen while you blokes did all the heavy work. Fr. Kramer will need a lot of help.

Marty, is “gurney” Brit-speak for “scaffold”? In the US gurney is only used for the wheeled stretcher that is in the ambulance, etc. I don’t think you mean there’s certain to be injuries from the project! Especially since you’re also commenting on needing a cherry-picker.
Limbo, do you seriously suggest to clean light bulbs??? Surely just turning them on heats the air enough to keep the dust off.
(And are these ancient churches even all wired for electric lights? I know that when I attended Mass in St Louis in New Orleans (the wonderful cathedral in the French Quarter), I discovered that that beautiful old church predates the era of building in restroom facilities. I would expect that aside from perhaps a required emergency light at the entrances they decided not to have the electricians in to tear up the walls/run conduit all over the surfaces.)

A concelebrated mass is ONE mass. Which is better—9 masses by 9 priests or one mass with 9 concelebrating?
IMHO, the justification for concelebration is based on a Mass as Meal understanding, with a severe de-emphasis of the Mass as Sacrifice. If the mass is a meal, then the relevance of multiple masses is mostly just a matter of people being different locations.
If the mass is a Sacrifice, however, then the salvific benefits must be multiplied.
