The Feeder Feed: ravenous Grosbeak edition

I mentioned in yesterday’s Feeder Feed that the birds were eating like made.Twitter

Many of them are starting to gear up for migration.  Some are going to nest.

Here is a shot of what is going on with Red-Breasted Grosbeaks, which are in abundance this year.

It is a little hard to see what is going on, so click the image for a larger version.

There is an Oriole, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and at least 7 Grosbeaks, 1 male, 6 females.

These are mostly young birds.  The adults have pretty much disappeared, gone south to stake out their territory.

There are only a few young males around and zillions of females.  I counted a dozen at one point yesterday.

Right now you will see Grosbeaks very often when I have the Z-Cam tuned to one of the webcams close close to a feeder.

I filled the big square hanging feeder yesterday afternoon, and the tube two days ago.

Soooo….

Wow, you sure draw a crowd, Fr. Z.! I have a challenge for your talented readers – come up with a parody using the numbers and kinds of birds based on the 12 Days of Christmas Song! (Click on the photo for what I’m talking about.) On your mark get set, go!

Helps to think cool thoughts when it has been sooo hot & humid!

  2. The first year males and females look much alike until they molt into adult plumage. Sometimes one can catch a glimpse of the pink underwings on the young males. Our Grosbeaks can empty a feeder quickly!

    Why are there no Cardinals?

    Cardinals, cardinals, beaming bright
far from feeders at early light,
when grosbeaks flock to Fr. Z
Does he who feeds not care for thee?
