Study shows self-identifying homosexuals are actually a very small percent of US population

At Investors.com we find this interesting article.

I must say that, if this is accurate – and it seems to be – then the mainsteam media and entertainment industry saturation of homosexual stories and characters in TV shows is even more obviously revealed as blatant social engineering which must be resisted and stopped.

Massive study finds only 3.4% of American adults identify as LGBT

By ANDREW MALCOLM

A massive new survey published this morning reveals that only 3.4% of American adults publicly identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, with the highest percentage coming among the younger, less-educated non-whites.
The new Gallup Poll of more than 121,000 adults, the largest of its kind on record, wass conducted during the past four months. It finds the percentage of self-reported LGBT Americans to be much smaller than a general impression derived from their presence in popular culture and their perceived influence in liberal American politics.
The special report found 3.4% of adult Americans publicly reporting themselves as personally identifying with those categories, 92.2% saying they do not and 4.4% refusing to say or claiming not to know.
Given the stigma often attached by some to those categories, some unknown portion of the Didn’t Say’s and No’s presumably are choosing to remain in the closet, holding down the LGBT number somewhat.
“This initial analysis,” Gallup reports, “reveals new insights into the composition of the LGBT community in the U.S. In particular, the findings challenge both media and cultural stereotypes to reveal that the LGBT population is in a number of ways not that different from the broader U.S. population.”  [EXACTLY.]
Gallup also found the social characteristics of those self-reporting themselves as LGBT is dramatically different from their portrayal in the media as largely white, well-educated and well-to-do.
The largest percentage (4.6%) came among blacks, followed by Asians (4.3%), Hispanics (4%) and non-Hispanic whites (3.2%).
Results showed that a larger percentage of women, especially younger women, reported themselves as LGBT (3.6%) compared to men (3.3%).
And Gallup reports those publicly asserting to be LGBT tend to be younger, less-educated and less wealthy than the rest of the population.
Among those making less than $24,000, 5.1% reported being LGBT, compared with 3.5% earning between $24,000 and $60,000 and only 2.8% who earned more.
The more education respondents had the less likely they were to report being LGBT. Those with some college education (4%) or some high school (3.5%) came in under those with college diplomas (2.8%) or a post-graduate degree (3.2%).
East and West coast residents tended to report being LGBT more (3.7% and 3.6%, respectively) than those living in the Midwest (3.4%) or the South (3.2%).
Gallup also noted:

“As courts, legislatures, and voters continue to debate issues like marriage for same-sex couples, child-rearing rights for LGBT people, and bans on workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, these data provide new and detailed information about the lives of LGBT Americans and their families. They offer an unprecedented resource for informing those debates with facts rather than stereotype or anecdote.

Studies continue to show that homosexuality is a deviation from the norm, even if efforts like this one in Australia, http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/children-to-be-taught-39heterosexuality-not-the-norm39-in-australian-school , protest loudly to the contrary. However, the psychiatric profession continues to treat homosexuality as just another normal choice, ignoring the mental and physical harm that homosexual activity causes to people who engage in it. If those who suffer from SSA are less than 10% of the population, and homosexual activity has been shown to be harmful to people, why is so much money being spent to try to convince people otherwise. What is the endgame here- to divorce procreation from relationships, to get at religious groups, to break down the moral order so that a new one can be imposed, to take the rights of parents to educate their children as they see fit? I fear that an ungodly motivation is behind this push to normalize an inherently abnormal behavior. I feel for those who suffer from SSA, but we must love them in truth and help them to carry what has to be a very heavy burden, and we must not let their pain be hijacked by those who wish to build a new moral order based on the indulgence of every desire no matter how base.

  2. wmeyer says:

It would be interesting, perhaps, to know the percentage of “mental health professionals” who self-identify as SSA.

  4. Father K says:

Unfortunately such a low figure could be used by the same-sex marriage lobby group to say that same sex marriage will have no impact on society and the institution of marriage as the numbers desiring such a union are very low.

  5. wmeyer says:

Father K, you are right, and I am surprised, in fact, that the numbers are as high as they are, in that survey. I am inclined to suspect that the sample was skewed to urban populations.

  6. MrTipsNZ says:

One of the main reasons Freud put homosexuality in his list of mental disorders was that its occurrence matched that of other disorders such as manic depression, schizophrenia and personality disorders, all of which range between 1-3% of the population. Separating out the LGBT components of this study would give similar numbers.

Now of course, occurrence per se does not make diagnosis or epidemiology, but there is usually correlation. More reason to ask what was the APA thinking back in 1973?

  7. Sissy says:

“Massive study finds only 3.4% of American adults identify as LGBT”

So why do they make up about 80% of TV characters?

  8. acardnal says:

Astute observation Sissy. The LGBT community has infiltrated the entertainment industry as producers, writers, studio management and content providers. And this domination of on-the-air, MSM productions have and are influencing the children and youth of the so called normative behavior of LGBT and SSA individuals. Please bring back Leave it to Beaver and My Three Sons.

  9. chantgirl says:

Father K- even though we are talking about a small percentage of the population, an inordinate amount has been spent “re-educating” children in school anti-bullying programs that are thinly veiled pro-homosexuality propaganda classes. Has a similar amount been spent making sure that kids don’t make fun of their peers who stutter, wear glasses, or are overweight? How many businesses have been sued or boycotted by this very small segment of the population? How many attempts to curb the first amendment rights of pastors? How many adoption agencies have had to close? I think we can counter that argument by pointing out the problems that have already surfaced. The LGBT lobby does not want equal rights; they want everyone’s freedom of speech and freedom of religion to be forced to take a back seat to their agenda. They will not be happy until no one calls out homosexual behavior as unnatural and harmful to individuals and society. They want tacit if not outright acceptance of a behavior that will prick the conscience even if no one opposes them. They will not achieve this sort of acceptance unless they steamroll pastors and indoctrinate schoolchildren, and ultimately step on legitimate rights (speech, religion) that Americans already have. We need to remind people of the problems that have already surfaced, especially in countries that are a little farther down the road on this issue.

  10. Sissy says:

Exactly, acardnal. It’s all part of the leftist push to convince us (especially children) that the behavior is “normal”. MrTipsNZ above asks what was the APA thinking back in 1973? They were thinking the very same thing then that they are thinking now when floating the trial balloon that pedophilia is also “normal”. We are being bombarded by popular culture and academia with the false notion that perversion is not only normal, but positive and life-enhancing. December 21st can’t come soon enough (just kidding).

Am I wrong, or doesn’t this data correlate with the groups (poor, minorities, less educated) identified by the census as having a larger percenrtage of fatherless homes? Something to consider.

  12. wmeyer says:

The LGBT community has infiltrated the entertainment industry as producers, writers, studio management and content providers.

Not precisely. The arts in general have long provided safe haven for folks of the LGBT persuasion. Since long before anyone coined the LGBT acronym. And as film and theatre are both also bastions of liberal “thought”, gaining their support would not have been very difficult, once it could be seen to have popular support among the wider lib audience.

On the other hand, advertisers are notoriously sensitive to customer complaints, as they recognize–as do politicians–that only one in perhaps 10,000 will actually bestir himself to write and post a letter. So if they receive 3,000 letters opposed to something, those may, by extension, account for 30,000,000 people who choose whether to buy.

In general, we need to recognize, as do the libs, that small campaigns can be inordinately successful.

I just remembered that yesterday an U.S. Appellate Court in New York ruled the DOMA statute unconstitutional. I think this was the second Appellate Court that ruled as such. So, it will be up to the Supreme Court soon.

  15. chantgirl says:

acardnal- I think we should keep a close eye on that. The results of that case (assuming the court has the courage to take it on) could be a huge game-changer for religious freedom.

  20. mamajen says:

I am surprised by the ethnic breakdown because those communities that have the highest numbers are also known to be least “tolerant” of homosexuality. In fact, it was predicted that the DNC’s adoption of gay marriage as part of its platform would present problems with the “black vote”. Very interesting.

  21. Sissy says:

mamajen, maybe that community is most opposed for the very reason that they have a greater opportunity to see the damage homosexual behavior causes?

  22. Giuseppe says:

Re. Massive study finds only 3.4% of American adults identify as LGBT” So why do they make up about 80% of TV characters?

    80%?
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/2012/10/05/glaad-more-gay-characters-than-ever-on-tv-this-fall/1615115/

Same-sex attraction, activity, and relationships are no longer taboo in most groups outside of traditionalist Roman Catholic and evangelical African-American blogs and church communities. Those who view them as such are considered ‘non-mainstream’. Demography is destiny, and the next generation (i.e. under 40) largely accepts same-sex sexual relationships. When a prominent Minnesota Vikings football player is leading the fight for marriage ‘equality’, then you know the tide has turned.

  23. chantgirl says:

Father K- sorry if it sounded like I was disagreeing with you. I agree that that tactic will probably be one of many tried. I only wanted to offer a response to the tactic that you thought might be employed. When people say that gay marriage will only involve a small segment of the population and will not affect the rest of us, we can counter with the ways that the gay rights lobby has already persecuted those who believe in traditional marriage. I’m sorry if I sounded like I was disagreeing.

  24. Michelle F says:

mamajen – I also was surprised by the ethnic breakdown of the statistics, but back in May of this year the NAACP officially endorsed gay marriage and I was stunned by that. Dr. Alvada King (Martin Luther King Jr.’s niece) pounced on them for it, as did others, but as far as I know they did not change their stance. From what I know of blacks who have come here from Africa, and I know a few, they seem to have a very traditional view of marriage and the roles of men and women, but the viewpoint of black American society may have changed.

Hispanics may be embracing the “gay rights” message because many have grown up and lived under the influence of Liberation Theology, but that connection is just a wild guess on my part.

As for Asians… “Asia” comprises so many countries and cultures that it’s impossible to know exactly who makes up the reported 4.3%.

  25. catholicmidwest says:

The very people who are always trying to get everyone else to be “tolerant” are the ones that perpetuate the stereotypes. It’s almost like they are trying to exorcise their own demons by taking it out on the rest of us, who couldn’t possibly care less and just want to mind our own business.

  26. Imrahil says:

Well whoever, including homosexuals, ever said anything else than that homosexuality is an exception to the norm had not been talking sense, and is not talking sense still. The whole issue is about whether this exception is also deviation.

That being said, a percentage of 7.8 % who in a public manner choose not confess to be heterosexual is actually not so very low. That would be two guys in a schoolclass! Dear @wmeyer is spot on.

(As we are at least objectively dealing with a moral issue, we should not overestimate the “stigma” and “remaining in the closet” beyond the public “Don’t say” faction. Those who want to be heterosexuals while perhaps feeling other attractions, and I guess even those who pay to heterosexuality the tribute of lip service, are in our camp.)

  27. Father K says:

    acardnal

    I wasn’t addressing you

  28. Sissy says:

Guiseppe: it was a joke. You do realize that I kid around a lot? Sometimes, I get the feeling you aren’t a native speaker of English (not that there’s anything wrong with that!)

I think you are mistaken in your claim that “ssa, activity, and relationships” are now widely-accepted while those who reject who object to that idea are out of the mainstream. Same-sex “marriage” has been rejected by a majority of voters every time it has been on a ballot; the LGBT lobby is batting 0 for 32. You’ve mentioned before that you get your theories about this from talking to young people. What I observe is that college-aged young people think all sorts of stupid things (I say this as the grandmother of 3 college students). Then they grow up, get jobs, get married, have kids, and become much more traditional in their thinking. There is a steady drumbeat from this lobby trying to convince us that what you say is true. But I don’t think we are quite so far-gone as you seem to believe.

  29. Gail F says:

I find it interesting that more people refused to answer the question (4.4%) than “self-identified” as “GLTB.” There are people saying this proves that a great many people are “in the closet,” but I find that hard to believe — considering that it is now fashionable to identify as one of those things, and there are fewer social taboos on it than ever before. It seems to me more likely that while some do refuse to admit it, some have decided not to act on their feelings, some people said it was none of the poller’s business, and others were confused about what their feelings are and whether they constitute an identity or not. (Contrary to popular belief, many people with same-sex attraction, even people who have no desire to change that attraction, don’t consider that it is the be-all and end-all of their existence.) So that 4.4% figure probably covers many different types of people. I read another overview of this study — unfortunately, I can’t remember where and can’t find it right now — that said the majority of the 3.4% of people who consider themselves “GLTBQ” or whatever the term Gallop used is, self-identify as bisexual. So that is another interesting wrinkle, and it means that the number of people who say their identity is expressed by their sexual attraction to (only) a person of the same gender is actually very, VERY small. Closer to 1%, according to this.
Thanks mostly to television, due to a massive campaign to get likeable gay characters on all programs, polls have shown that many people believe 25% of the American population is homosexual.

  30. MikeM says:

This is actually a higher number than I’ve seen before. According to the ORC study which had previously been the most cited (at least, in situations where you need a real study), the number was ~2%.

  31. Angie Mcs says:

The LGBT population has long been dominant in the entertainment industry. My parents were both struggling actors in Europe before and after WWII, and told me about the large percentage of homosexuals they worked with, and that even before their time, it was a well known fact. The difference today is that our media is so powerful and pervasive, and Hollywood tends to copy cat any show that is somewhat successful. It’s easy money without any creativity. So we get show after show with homosexual themes, as singles, family with children, etc, as well as reality shows and those which have hosts such as “Ellen”. A worker who sometimes comes to my home has a brother who has earned numerous Emmys for his technical support on a famous reality show. He is homosexual and very agressive about it, and the brothers don’t speak. Hollywood is an entirely different world yet it controls just about everything we, and our young people see. It’s just blatantly wrong that this small percentage should wield so much power. Perhaps w.meyer has the right idea about the effectiveness of small campaigns: a letter to an advertiser of these shows could go far . Money always talks in La-La Land. And Father is absolutely correct that this “social engineering”must stop.

( BTW, I try not to use the word “gay” in this context: it used to be such a nice, happy word, and it has been taken over for such unpleasant usage.)

  32. The Sicilian Woman says:

That percentage, if correct, is much lower than I had thought it would be, somewhere in the 10%-15% range.

The percentage is deceptive, however. Such a small number does not take into account the network surrounding each individual represented in that number through parents, siblings, and friends, though there are certainly homosexuals whose relationships with their families and/or friends have ended, mutually or by one side.

These networks have provided and will continue to provide much of the support for the homosexual agenda we’ve seen. “Catholic” families have fallen by the wayside, too, including my own. So many parents are “Catholic” until they come up against Church doctrine that says that their son cannot marry his boyfriend or that their daughter cannot marry her girlfriend (or that their child cannot have a sex-change, nor conceive through assisted reproductive therapy, and so on). The rare Catholic parents who tell their son or daughter that they love them but will not allow the child’s romantic partner into their home or family are likely to lose their child to the secular dogma of “you approve everything or I’m gone.” I’ll dare say that the majority of Catholic parents toss aside any Church doctrine that represents a challenge or hardship for their child. “As long as they’re happy” precludes Truth; “love” means full acceptance without correction. Child first, then God…maybe. As did a co-worker of mine, a parent of a homosexual son, these parents want priests (and the Church) to shut up about homosexuality and marriage. Some of these parents and families retain the external appearance of being Catholic, such as Church attendance (and receiving the Eucharist and other sacraments), while others leave the Church altogether.

Now, extend that percentage plus its network, “Catholic” and non-Catholic alike, of the small percentage of homosexuals to two powerful communities that mold and shape our youth, and provide our information sources: Education and entertainment. Education, K-through college, is a bastion of liberal thought. (Speaking from much experience.) wmeyer is correct about the power homosexuals have in entertainment; it’s because they largely have been the backbone of anything related to arts, beyond theatre, film and television. Theatre, in particular, has always been a safe haven for homosexuals. The entertainment and “news” industry are one and the same. So, you have a two-prong approach to change: Step 1: Replace true education with social engineering. Step 2: Saturate the media with programming and commentary normalizing homosexuality, and demonizing anyone who disagrees with it.

If you still think that percentage is small, think again.

  33. celpar says:

This is pretty similar to what a survey found in the UK a couple of years ago: some 2% of the population (we’re always a little behind the USA) self-identify as LGBT. This is less than the mysterious 3% who claimed not to know their sexual orientation.

This tiny minority is, here, as in the USA, hugely over-represented in the media, and it is this which has led to a mindset where people can (or feel they should) assert that homosexuality is ‘normal and harmless’ and our political class is hell-bent on instituting same-sex ‘marriage’, despite few people wanting or approving of it
