A priest friend sent a video of a Portuguese priest, Fr. José Cruz in Moita dos Ferreiros from Easter 2014.
I can imagine statues of Our Lady of Fatima weeping at the sight of this.

“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

A man doesn’t behave this way, ever.
This thing brings to life Carey Landry’s “And the Father will Dance” song pretty well, though.
My thought also, rwj, especially not a reverent priest in the presence of God’s altar. I couldn’t stand to watch all the way to the end; I just finished lunch and I hope it stays down!
At least it wasn’t a blue vestment…..
He looks like he’s wearing one of those zombie disguise capes from the Walking Dead.
Kind of a Richard Simmons in a flowy alb sort of a groove, no?
Oy vey…
Perhaps a fear of this sort of thing is the reason that fiddle-back chasubles are so popular among the more traditionally inclined. :)
The bro isn’t even wearing a stole…
Look, this is not a problem. The pope says we have to worry about the fundamentalist Catholics. This little guy is A-OK.
St. Peter Damian and his Book of Gomorrah come to my mind.
rwj, your first sentence spoke volumes. I couldn’t agree more.
Isn’t that the Dance of the Midian Daughters in Cecil B. DeMille’s Ten Commandments?
This video also shows one priest who would probably never don tactical clericals if the going gets rough. I also thought the parishioners waving white flags was fitting, considering the advance of Islam.
Well we know where the center of attention is at this Mass, if it was a Mass. Cue the Frank Sinatra parody music… “It had to be me, wonderful me, it had to be me…”
Perhaps he has embraced Islam and become a whirling Dervish.
If my only choice on a Sunday was between a mass at the above parish and an Orthodox liturgy, I would take the latter with a clear conscience. I doubt that parish celebrates anything remotely celebrating a CATHOLIC rite. There has to be a point where the Sunday obligation is abrogated if the only option is a mockery of the holy sacrifice. The above may be a religious celebration, but that religion is not Catholicism.
Want to clear your head and watch a better liturgy? Here’s an ordination on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC8DcAy1bnU
You should have posted a warning label, Pater.
Bad, but this is worse (watch what happens at 02:28):

Looks like he’s getting ready for a bull fight.
@ tianzhujiao – I was going to say that at least in that video the attention seems to be on the Host – but then the priest started dancing with the monstrance…
But father, but father, you hate VII…and the lovely liturgy that is so conducive to active participation…
I think we could summarize this priest’s approach to Mass simply: “ME!”
Is this a neocat Mass?
“I can imagine statues of Our Lady of Fatima weeping at the sight of this.”
I see what you did there.
Although I am not one to condone the word of seers on this blog (or in general for that matter), when I see videos like these, I can’t help but think of the prophecies of the late Argentinian seer, Benjamin Solari Parravicini…he was something like Argentina’s own version of Nostradamus. He communicated his predictions through drawings called psychographies… Anyways, back in the 30s/40s he did a few predictions about the Church, including that “the Catholic Mass will become protestant without actually being so”…and indeed look at what happened to the Mass after the liturgical changes of the 1960s/70s. You can see the relevant drawing here, but the text of the prophecy is in Spanish: https://psicosi2012.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/psico17.jpg
Parravicini also wrote in a different drawing that the “Catholic Church would err and that her very leaders themselves would be the ones to corrupt her” (http://www.profeciasyprofetas.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/fg20.jpg)… in the case of this prediction, it’s enough to look at the happenings of the recent Synod, and at the current generation of “mercy” bishops/cardinals, especially Marx, Kasper, Cupich….and yes, Francis himself (never mind his “who am I to judge” and his anti-fundamentalist stance), but I digress—-to borrow Father Z’s phrase :-)
You can make of it what you will…I just couldn’t help but think of the prophecy in these drawings in light of the current happenings in the Church, and of Francis’ papacy in general.
Anyways it is a testament to the lack of catholicity in “liturgies” like in the above video that makes it compelling enough to remind people of why they should attend the TLM, a truly and very Catholic liturgy hands-down.
Massachusetts Catholic, you read my mind. I too, when viewing this ‘gem’, immediately thought, “Bull”.
What in tarnation?????
Ugh. Only made it to 14 sec. mark.
I second that a man doesn’t behave in this way. He seemed a little light in his loafers for my taste. Also, I didn’t see many men in the audience (err, I mean congregation), cheering him on…
Like a medieval serf, the best shot I have for a dose of meaning and beauty for the entire week is two hours at Mass each Sunday.
How ’bout for the Year of Mercy they knock this stuff off and give us poor chump laity a break?
What we are seeing here is sadly played out in many places where congregations are in the death throes of EF Deprivation Syndrome (EFDS). The command, lord of the dance, performance, with matador accents, the “It’s My Party” altar hijack, the invocation to pagan hysteria, the conga camp elements with many certain aged women donning silk scarves in harem formation and flag waving serpentining throughout the sanctuary at the male pagan ritualist’s incantations, these are the indicators of advanced stages. There is a cure, but it must be swift to be effective. The women followers will at first experience waves of withdrawal when the dance lord is separated from their number, but eventually, after burning their flags, banners, and liturgical silk scarves, they will have closure and then slowly be able to regain the senses they took leave of while under the spell of their charismatic group leader. With careful triage in the form of immediate establishment of a mission by the FSSP or the Institute of Christ the King, the local ordinary may still have a short, ever closing window of time. There is hope.
Santo Cristo, tende misericórdia de nós.
Perhaps he’s lucky we don’t believe in assassination?
On a somewhat less caustic note, I’m suddenly reminded of why I struggled as much as I did about 14 years ago with faith. When you have a choice between what comes across as a Mass for an idiot, but which the local bishop has blessed, and a Mass that seems serious enough to tackle life, but which the local bishop doesn’t recognize, you feel jammed hard between a rock and a hard place.
Spectacles like this do not help the Church remain united.
tianzhujaio – OW!!! Were you unlucky enough to witness this, or did you find this on the ‘net?
Please don’t watch the video of Tianzhujiao. Zhende, buyongle. Really, too much.
This brother of us, fr Cruz needs friends. Some other brother priests who can accompany him, invite him for a beer or two, listen to him, pray for him. A different kind of “audience.”
I made it to 33 seconds and now have a headache. A good thing he hadn’t a tambourine as well.
Seriously, brocade, stiff with embroidery and trimming, would make this impossible.
Tianzhujiao, your video is rightly titled profanation of the Blessed in Portuguese.
Is everyone in Brazil on acid?
@Fr Reader:
“This brother of us, fr Cruz needs friends. Some other brother priests who can accompany him, invite him for a beer or two, listen to him, pray for him. A different kind of “audience.”
You forgot to add….
“….then take him around the back of the building and robustly explain the error of his ways with as much character building physical encouragement as is required until the point is well and truely accepted.”
At least that’s how our Sgts used to deal with us errant Young Officers in the British Army anyway.
I actually feel very sorry for this priest. I haven’t seen anything quite like that but I have come to see and understand that when priests start doing way out things, and this is pretty way out, his priesthood is in serious crisis. For a priest to do this during Mass indicate he is desperately seeking attention, however inappropriate. Of more importance than the blatant liturgical abuse, and that is bad enough, is the state of mind of this poor man and his mental health. I suggest we pray for him and that his bishop/superior gets him the help he clearly needs, rather than getting hooked up on rubrics.
Mother of God, please help us.
Ouch.
I agree Dr. P.
I’m thinking maybe something along the lines of:
Sarcasm on: We need not worry about Father dancing when people are poor and sick and hungry. First, we must make sure that all are rich, well, and fed. Then we can worry about Father’s dancing on Saturday….or something. Sarcasm off.
I’ll second that, “Oy Vey!”
Is it wrong to hope for the Parousia of Our Lord Jesus to come sooner rather than later? I may not be perfectly prepared, but boy, am I ready.
The title at the end of the video, Fr. Cruz’ “performance” states that it is from an ” Easter Sunday Mass… April 20, 2014.”
Kyrie eleison!
will his bishop ask him when he stopped saying his Office
My priest just told me the other day that Brazil is losing Catholics by the thousands regularly to Protestantism. This video might explain part of the reason.
Someone needs to file a Fathers Acting Girlishly Report to Cdl Sarah.
Sue: I believe this lord of the dance fest was in Portugal not Brazil. But yes, Brazil is on track to become a Pentecostal nation… The Catholic Church across Latin America is plagued by a horrific priest shortage (far, far, far more severe than North America- in my wife’s native DR it’s one priest per 10 000 CAtholics or so), horrific liturgy, poor catechesis… And the evangelical and Pentecostal churches are growing like wildfire.
If I went to the church expecting the Easter Mass and was forced to do whatever the heck this is, can I sue the diocese for spiritual rape? After all, it is forced upon me against my will, and all my ‘stop’ and ‘no’ shouts are being ignored. In addition to the spiritual violation, these abusers want me to take out my wallet and pay for it. It’s even worse than prostitution, where at least right party gets paid.
Massachusetts Catholic : Sadly there is no Bull to the rescue.
andrewo : I noticed that missing stole too
What is this? I don’t even…
Hence the reason why I have been going Byzantine
[A wacko in Portugal does this stupid stuff and… therefore… you “go Byzantine”. Ummm….]
@kfb Thanks for the laugh… but that is not my style. Not yet.
@Father K. That is what I wanted to say.
