The Three Days of Darkness 2018 are underway in LA!

The Three Days of Darkness are underway in LA! (aka Religious Education Conference)

I wasn’t invited.

It might be interesting to have a photopost of your favorite moments.

Videos HERE

We can start with the front page, where there is an ad for the slithery, ambiguous book from the homosexualist Jesuit, on top of an ad for the mostly geriatric ultra-liberal Ass. of U.S. Catholic Priests.

It is instructive to go to the site of the Ass. of U.S. Catholic Priests to see what their agenda items are.

Telling.

For a glimpse of what this conference considers to be “liturgical music” look at the promotional music video for this year’s theme song:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga_hDte4uek&feature=youtu.be&t=1m31s

It was filmed in a church, and the altar and ambo were removed from the sanctuary so that the space could become a stage for the soloist and dancers. Perfect metaphor for how these composers/performers see themselves as stars instead of servants of the Mass.

It’s also a rock song. Not liturgical music in the least. Pure entertainment.

I just tuned in to the live stream. The whirling dervishes are whirling and the band is very enthusiastic.

  5. dbf223 says:

For an event featuring two cardinals and Bishop Robert Barron, that is easily the most hideous website I can even imagine. Is their web designer’s experience all in tinkering with Geocities sites as hobby twenty years ago?

  6. The Egyptian says:

Is it just me or is there really nothing on that list that does not counter or at least hint at dissent to the teachings of the Catholic Church??

Ass. of U.S. Catholic Priests, me thinks the first period should be dropped

    [Hey! It’s an abbreviation!]

  7. acardnal says:

I think folks should Tweet EWTN and thank them for NOT broadcasting this event this year as they have done in the past. Mother Angelica would be pleased.

    more like an aberration
a departure from what is normal, usual, or expected, typically one that is unwelcome.
synonyms: anomaly, deviation, departure from the norm, divergence, abnormality, irregularity, variation, digression, freak, rogue, rarity, oddity, peculiarity, curiosity, quirk; mistake
    “a statistical aberration”
    Optics
the failure of rays to converge at one focus because of limitations or defects in a lens or mirror.
    Origin
late 16th century: from Latin aberratio(n-), from aberrare ‘to stray’ (see aberrant).

I’m amazed they actually said “ordaining married men” instead of “letting priests marry.” That’s more accuracy than I would’ve expected out of that lot. It’s also the only accurate thing on that entire thing.

  10. Emilio says:

What I don’t understand is how this event has been allowed to continue all of these years under the leadership of Archbishop Gómez. It’s a yearly nutfest of heterodoxy, disguised as a “catechetical conference”. It doesn’t seem like he’s been able to turn L.A. around as one would have hoped. Once upon a time we all rejoiced in his appointment there with the confidence that the dark days of Mahony’s tenure would soon end, and I don’t feel it’s gone as expected.

  11. TonyO says:

Egyptian, I think the acronym should be Ass o’USCatP . To pronounce that: (you have to read this phonetically) ass o us cat pee.

Just doing a public service for geriatrics who probably can’t find their dentures even if they are told they have them in their mouths.

  12. David says:

The most ominous of the items in that list of interests to me is “Seminary Reform”. These people know that the single element most destructive to their program for the Church is the doctrinal and liturgical conservatism of young priests. Bur even if they were to achieve seminaries with heterodox formation they still will not get the kind of people they want to embrace celibacy. That is why the idea of married priests is so insidious. It may technically be a changeable discipline, but it is intimately connected to the aims of the radical left, since it is the only way they will get priests to their taste.

  13. maternalView says:

One of the ideas I’ve been trying to emphasize to my teen is to judge something by whether it helps you see and strive for the good, the true and the beautiful.

I didn’t have to go any farther than the “Rise Up” logo to see that this conference doesn’t help with that. Looking at the logo you’d have no idea it’s Catholic.

  14. tamranthor says:

I guess it is appropriate for them to hold this “event” during Lent. Looking at that material is certainly penitential.

For those who believe the newish Archbishop should have cleaned house already, please consider that he has to work with what he was given. The few priests that he has to deploy are steeped in nonsense, and until he can turn the tide, he isn’t going to have any more young men joining the priesthood any time soon. It can take years, even decades to undo that sort of damage.

If you have never experienced the fluffy malarkey that makes up being a Catholic here on the West Coast, perhaps you could simply say a prayer for that poor fellow trying to follow Jesus and lead his flock. It isn’t all like Wisconsin. :)

  15. JustaSinner says:

Dancing puppets? Wombyn Bishops? A “fabulous” priest fashion show? Did I miss anything? I mean, other than the presence of the Holy Ghost…

  16. TonyO says:

Emilio, I too had hoped that Archbishop Gomez would turn things around in LA. However, while almost ANY bishop was likely to be a big step up from Cardinal Mahoney, from the moment I heard Gomez mouthing the platitudes of the socialists and supporting pro illegal immigration groups with language only barely concealing a directive to disobey immigration laws, I knew better than to expect much. He has lived down to that expectation admirably. His participation in the recent call from the USCCB leadership (the action item on DACA) is right up his alley, and is completely emblematic of his mindset, as far as I have been able to tell.

  17. TKS says:

I had EWTN radio on a couple of hours ago and there was a broadcast from the LA REC. I’m seldom listening to EWTN anymore as more and more of those priests/bishops/cardinals I don’t want to hear are invading the schedule.

  18. Sawyer says:

@tamranthor, Gomez has had seven years to improve things. He hasn’t. He demands that politicians take immediate action on political and social causes he cares about, but he has presided over continued decline in his own domain under circumstances in which he is an autocrat. California employees are at-will. There is nothing — nothing whatsoever — preventing him from improving things except his own cowardice. The Office of Religious Education, which plans and runs the LAREC, has a director (a priest) that was appointed to that position by Gomez. So what’s the difficulty?

I don’t know if you’ve watched any of the videos that have been posted yet, but based on what I’ve seen this year the conference is even more deserving now of being called the Religious and Ethnic ENTERTAINMENT Congress. There is hardly any Catholicism discernable through all the ethnic and pop-entertainment junk.

  19. majuscule says:

I was just taking a quick look at the REC website and found the “statistics” page interesting.

    http://www.recongress.org/2018/stats.htm

It seems like the majority of attendees are local to California. I’m not sure what a lone person from Uganda, India or Italy might bring back to their diocese…but then again it could be enough to do some damage!

Did you know that they claim there will be 74 priests hearing confession? I would be more interested in the hours devoted to hearing those confessions, but even mere mention of the sacrament at this event seems positive!

  20. Sawyer says:

Here’s a clip of a wacky gender-identity petition that was read aloud at a morning prayer service in the presence of Archbishop Gomez. Don’t tell me the archbishop can’t stop this crap:
    https://youtu.be/7AIfKTTAApo?t=39m2s

Text: “Let us rise up for people who struggle with their gender identity, who were once loved by their families as a daughter but are now disowned as their son.”

In the full presence of Archbishop Gomez.

  21. Mike says:

It is inconceivable that a faithful shepherd would allow this wretched spectacle to be re-staged in his diocese year after year. The forsaken Catholics of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles greatly need our prayers, mortifications, and faithful witness.

  22. leftycbd says:

As I stated in the past, some brave priest should offer to do a talk on Summorum Pontificum and offer a TLM at this conference. We should start to take things back from within, just as those who oppose us have done.
