9 August: St. Romanus

Someone made a request for the today’s entry for St. Romanus from the Martyrologium Romanum.

2. Romae in coemeterio sancti Laurentii via Tiburtina sancti Romani, martyris.

Apparently not much is know about this saint that can be easily verified.  However, take note that this saint is celebrated on the Vigil of the Feast of St. Lawrence, as observed in the older, traditional Roman calendar.  The cemetery in question is the Campo Verano which is located next to the Minor Patriarchal Basilica of St. Lawrence outside the walls.  This is the location where some few American bombs fell at the end of WWII in Italy, causing much dismay and the famous scene with Pope Pius XII (of happy memory) depicted near the entrance to the cemetery in the bronze statue.
