Card. Castrillon Hoyos about the TLM on the new DVD

Remember that Card. Castrillon Hoyos consented to speak on the new DVD produced by the FSSP and EWTN?

Remember how he essentially said that priests don’t need to wait for requests from the faithful to begin having the TLM in their parishes?

Remmeber how he indicated that the Holy Father desires that celebrations of the TLM become normal?

Here is a YouTube of the section on the DVD.

If the “Document on the Document” re-iterates these points, and strongly so, it will be a pivotal point in the ROR. The single phrase “The Holy Father wants this Mass to become normal in the parishes” makes me think of the references to SP being like an atom bomb. Sure, it would have to be enforced to have any real impact, but at the very least, it would be difficult for Bishops to surmise about how many need to request, etc, when it has been said already that it should be offered even if not requested. All of the chips will be put on the table and there will be no excuse except obstinance for those who continue to oppose it.

  2. Lee says:

Father, do you know where I could find this without the English voice-over?

  3. Larry says:

Assuming the voice over is accurate it is most interesting that the Cardinal did not even mention the bishops. This is a pivotal point indeed! I would imagine that not a few episcopal blood pressure readings may hit a new high. Hopefully humility will permit them to accept this without further argument or deliberate attmept to dismiss the MP hoping it will just pass away. Please, please, Pray for our bishops and priests in this serious moment.

  4. RBrown says:

After the promulgation of SP, the first stage, a lot of bishops thought it was directed primarily at a specific group, the SSPX, FSSP, and some other eccentrics who favored the 1962 Missal.

Now we are entering the second stage, when it is now starting to be made clear that SP is for the entire Church–and every parish.

  5. Mark says:

In my opinion, it won’t mean anything to the Church at large until two things happen: 1.) the Holy Father celebrates Mass in the Extraordinay Form; and 2.) that there is a strong follow-up document that reflects what is being communicated by Cardinal Hoyos in the DVD.

  7. Tom says:

Regarding the Traditional Latin Mass, the Holy Father declared last that “the use of the old Missal presupposes a certain degree of liturgical formation and some knowledge of the Latin language; neither of these is found very often.

“Already from these concrete presuppositions, it is clearly seen that the new Missal will certainly remain the ordinary Form of the Roman Rite, not only on account of the juridical norms, but also because of the actual situation of the communities of the faithful.”

If the Holy Father desires that celebrations of the TLM become normal, then his above declaration is puzzling.

His Holiness’ TLM-related letter to bishops did not suggest that he envisioned that the TLM would spread to each parish.

His letter suggested that the TLM would not find widespread usage as “the use of the old Missal presupposes a certain degree of liturgical formation and some knowledge of the Latin language; neither of these is found very often…but also because of the actual situation of the communities of the faithful.”

Many bishops transformed Summorum Pontificum into a dead letter.

The Holy Father failed to respond (at least in public) to the many bishops who transformed Summorum Pontificum into a dead letter.

Did the Holy Father not desire last year that each parish would offer the TLM?

Or has His Holiness since determined that the sloooow brick-by-brick so-called “Marshall Plan” must be discarded in favor of a more radical approach to address the Latin Church’s liturgical crisis?

At any rate, many bishops treated Summorum Pontificum as a dead letter. Therefore, it will be an uphill battle in many dioceses to promote the TLM.

Unless Pope Benedict XVI is prepared to follow Pope Paul VI’s strategy in reverse…that is, the Holy Father must offer the TLM personally while compelling bishops and priests to offer the TLM…I find it difficult to believe that the TLM will become “normal” at each parish.

That said, the bottom line hasn’t changed…the Latin Church’s liturgical crisis is actually Peter’s liturgical crisis.

Someday, Peter must decided between the TLM and Novus Ordo.

Peter must either return to his great liturgical tradition or remain attached to the devastating Novus Ordo novelty.

Only when Peter resolves his liturgical crisis will the Latin Church’s liturgical crisis cease to exist.

    Pax.

  8. Stephen says:

It is my understanding the FSSP will hold a press conference after the ordinations with the Cardinal so reporters can ask him questions. I wonder if any Catholic reporters will bring this up?

  9. Chironomo says:

    Tom;

I don’t think there is any contradiction between the NO being the ordinary form in most parishes, and the TLM becoming normal in parishes. Spanish language Masses are a normal event in U.S Parishes, but they are not (yet) the odinary type of Mass said. As for the Latin language problem, that can be solved through appropriate training at seminaries, but will take a generation to resolve. I agree with RBrown that this is the next “stage” of the effort to re-introduce the TLM into the Latin Church.

  10. RBrown says:

    Agree.

The Holy Father HAS NOT YET RESPONDED (at least in public) to the many bishops who transformed Summorum Pontificum into a dead letter.

    Comment by Tom

I agree that it’s important that there be a papal mass using the 1962 Missal.

On the other hand, it’s also important to realize that there is more going on here: Rome is now trying to regain control over the liturgy, which was all but renounced almost 40 years ago.

The vernacular/Novus Ordo was implemented fairly quickly because Paul VI was able to use the previous structure of discipline. The irony, of course, is that he utilized the structure in order to destroy it.

Sadly, that structure is gone, and it’s simply going to take some time to be rebuilt.

Perhaps somebody ought to play the video for the bishops at their meeting in June. Don’t hold your breath.

  12. Tommy says:

I think a copy of it ought to be mailed to every priest in the United States.

And,…..included with the DVD; a 30 question exam to be taken and returned to Rome.

The FSSP and EWTN is making a free copy available for every priest and seminarian in the U.S. As a layperson, you can also order a copy for $20 plus postage. The link is on the blog posting originally used for this subject a week or so ago.

  14. Ann says:

Just wondering…after watching this video I thought to myself: does there exist a video which teaches and explains to priests the reverent celebration of the Novus Ordo? But sadly, the next thought was that even if there were, I suspect that it would have to be sort of like one of those children’s books in which you “choose” your own story as you go and flip the pages accordingly, because of the “options” that are used.

By this comment, I mean absolutely no disrespect to Pope Paul VI who, as was mentioned above, had the structure of the TLM to use as a basis for the “new” Mass, and obviously expected that we would not stray so far from tradition as we have. He also likely expected us to have and exercise common sense in choosing our options and in deciding on a per incident basis whether or not certain little things were appropriate. I’m sure he is rolling in his grave over the extent to which the liturgy has been degraded by some.

Although I was raised with the Novus Ordo and am still attending such as I have not yet experienced the TLM in my area, I would venture to say that from my position, I think the biggest problem is having the priest face the people instead of the altar. If I had to nail down the things that distract most from Mass in my experience, they can all be traced to the horizontal atmosphere that is created by the interaction that occurs between priest and people through spontaneous dialogue, facial expressions, greetings that do not fit with liturgy such as “good morning, isn’t the weather beautiful today?” which serve to immediately set a casual social tone which carries on throughout the Mass right up to the “announcement” time when we talk back and forth and laugh at each other’s comments as one person after another approaches the ambo with their news of coming events. While not necessarily intended to do so, it does seem to make things about all of us instead of about God and worshipping Him reverently.

I tend to doubt that priests celebrating Mass facing the altar are thinking about whether or not the people in the pews are feeling good at any given time, are openly participating in the songs, are finding what he is doing “interesting” enough to come back next week, etc. I would guess that he is fully focussed on and concerned with CELEBRATING MASS. WOW!

  15. That’s very good Analysis Ann

The priest can much easier be a priest by facing the altar, ad orientem, rather than versus populum. I also believe that it’s easier on the the Faithful if the priest faces ad orientem. That is the BIGGEST distraction for me at a NO VP Mass

Who renounced control of the Liturgy?

The Popes have made it clear that they are in control of the Roman Liturgy.
